4 Personal Liability Insurance Update Canadian Pharmacists Association Your CPBA personal liability insurance has recently changed brokers, switching from Moore McLean to our new broker Marsh Canada. This switch was done in order to continue offering our members the most comprehensive policy possible in the most cost effective manner. We are very confident that our new relationship will allow us to further grow and build upon the success we ve had with CPBA in recent years. Stay tuned in the coming months as we begin to share with you some of the enhanced services that Marsh Canada will be providing. Your policy meets all of the requirements under the new Act and Regulations. We have been working closely with our broker to ensure that the needs of our members are met with respect to recent regulatory changes affecting personal liability coverage. Also we are pleased to be able to offer coverage for other classes regulated by the PEI College of Pharmacists: Pharmacy Interns & Students, Regulated Technicians, and International Pharmacy Graduates working towards licensure as a pharmacist. We have negotiated a decrease in premiums on your behalf. More information on the policies and coverage levels are included in this year s registration package. If you have any questions or insurance needs please contact the Association for further information. CPBA is a pharmacist led Association: We understand the issues you face and as such are able to address these in a more comprehensive fashion to meet your needs. Complementary Insurance is now offered to those with coverage through another source who wish to fill any possible gaps to their employer s policy and/or to increase employer s limits to $3,000,000 per claim/$5,000,000 aggregate. This has been a year of tremendous change with our national Association, as CPhA has transitioned to a new membership structure. Under the new format, each provincial association is now a member of the association meaning that every member of PEIPhA now has full access to the benefits of CPhA membership: Best available rates on CPhA products and services such as publications and continuing educational programs. PEIPhA has access to CPhA national shared services like research, continuing education programs, software licenses, personnel to assist with special projects, and promotional material. Support from CPhA with respect to advocacy in dealing with media and government relations and development of national public health position statements. Possible future enhanced partnerships with national retailers and service providers. PEIPhA joined CPhA in September and the new Board has been working hard since then at determining what the new governance model looks like and what our short term and long term strategic goals are. PEIPhA is also working with CPhA on developing an efficient and regular communication to members to inform you on what s happening at the national level and in the various provinces. Stay tuned! These changes are tremendously beneficial for a small province like ours and will assist us with meeting our goal of delivering cost effective services to our members. Comments and feedback are welcomed as we continue to work through the changes. Shawn Callaghan, PEI Board Member, CPhA
5 New Industry-Run Programs for Medication and Sharps Return in Prince Edward Island Following the Environmental Protection Act Materials Stewardship and Recycling Regulations passed in June 2014, producers of pharmaceuticals and medical sharps in Prince Edward Island became responsible for the endof-life management of their products. The Health Products Stewardship Association (HPSA) is a not-forprofit industry stewardship organization that was established in 1999 to provide the health product industries with a collective means for managing their extended producer responsibility (EPR) obligations under regulated provincial programs in Canada. The program plans for the Island Medication Return Program (IMRP) and Island Sharps Collection Program (ISCP) have been approved and are set to officially launch on June 1, Registration for these new programs will be open a few months prior to the start date. are hoping to make the transition to industry-run programming as smooth as possible. Surveys were sent out via fax in late January to each retail pharmacy in order to gain valuable information from Island Pharmacists. We greatly appreciate your input. If you did not receive one of our surveys, please contact us by one of the methods listed below and we will send you a new copy. Demonstrated through participation in the current programs, PEI Pharmacists are well aware of the dangers posed by the storage and potential use or abuse of unused or expired medications and used sharps in the home. The environmental implications of flushing or improperly disposing of medications or sharps cannot be understated. Through participation in the IMRP and ISCP you are continuing to provide your community with this valuable service. Pharmacies that enroll in the IMRP and ISCP will have access to free promotional brochures, standardized medications return pails and sharps containers. You will be compensated for the delivery of full sharps packages and medication pails to IWMC Waste Watch Centers. All registered pharmacies will be listed in our searchable return locations database at In the coming months, HPSA will be providing accredited pharmacies with information on the process of enrollment. Please check the PEI Collections page at for updates. The approved program plans are currently available at this URL. In the meantime, questions or comments can be directed to HPSA at info@healthsteward.ca or We look forward to working alongside Prince Edward Island Pharmacists to provide this important service to the Island. Sharps collection programs, the IMRP and ISCP will rely on the voluntary participation of PEI pharmacies. We
6 INSPIRED COPD Program Pharmacist Awareness Month is only a month away! The PEI Pharmacists Association is encouraging all pharmacists and pharmacy students to become involved this year and promote our profession. We can t do this without you Pharmacists are an important partner with Health PEI to ensure COPD patients receive optimal evidence based care. Pharmacists can help patients better understand their medication and provide education, as well as strategies on how to manage their COPD. One recommendation from the Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) is a COPD Action Plan which includes a prescription to be on file at the pharmacy for antibiotics and/or prednisone. We recommend putting up signage in retail locations as well as hospitals, holding extra clinic days and even educational sessions on pharmacists' expanded scope of practice. Going out into local schools is also a great way to promote the profession and have a little fun at the same time. Resources including posters and power point presentations are available for your use! For further ideas or help getting things off the ground please contact us at peipharm@gmail.com. A Focus on FLU.. As of February, 2015 pharmacists have administered influenza vaccine to almost 10,000 Islanders!! Prescribing for Minor Ailments Pharmacists play an integral role in helping patients identify when to activate the prescription identified in their action plan. A current initiative of Heath PEI is the implementation of an INSPIRED COPD Program. Please stay tuned for more information. If you have any questions or for further information please contact Maureen Black, COPD Coordinator at meblack@ihis.org or The legislation passed in September has provided pharmacists with even more opportunities to provide accessible health care to Islanders. Are you providing this service in your practice? What are your barriers? Please stay tuned for an important pharmacist surveycoming soon!
