1 ARE YOU A CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT STUDENT INTERESTED IN A BACHELORS DEGREE? A.A.S in Construction Management Technology B.S. in Construction Management or Technical Resource Management B.S. Construction Management Degree On-Campus at Bloomington/Normal, IL B.S. Technical Resource Management Off-Campus at University Center of Lake County Grayslake, IL OR B.S./B.A. in Business (multiple locations) Several options are available to students at CLC who wish to pursue a Bachelors degree upon completion of the A.A.S. in Construction Management from CLC. CLC students can pursue a Bachelors Degree in Construction Management from ISU, Purdue-Calumet, MSOE, or Bradley. Information on CM programs at ISU is attached. Students can transfer up to 58 credits from CLC to ISU. Students can also pursue a B.S. in Technical Resource Management (TRM) from SIU. The TRM program is a capstone option in which SIU accepts the AAS from CLC and students have just 60 credits left to complete their B.S. Degree. Some students elect to pursue a B.S. in Business Administration, which tends to be easier to work on at night or weekends. Several programs are being offered at the University Center of Lake County ( Information on some CLC coursework necessary to transfer to area business schools is attached. 3 Beyond the Ordinary The Construction Management Technology program at College of Lake County prepares students for entrylevel success. For those who want to expand their opportunities, the Technical Resource Management degree at Southern Illinois University Carbondale can provide the training and courses that can open the doors to advancement. With SIUC s Capstone Option, qualifying students with an A.A.S. have an advantage. Capstone reduces University Core Curriculum from 41 to 30 hours and guarantees an academic plan of no more than 60 hours to earn a Bachelor of Science. 4 TRM Required Core TRM Applications of Technical Information. This course will increase students abilities in communicating various types of workplace documents common to technical disciplines. Oral presentations will use computerized presentation software. Prerequisite: English 101. TRM Work Center Management. A study of the problems of managing a small working unit (division, department, work center, section, etc.) within a larger unit (agency, company, regional office, etc.). Included items will be work center goals identification, staffing needs, monitoring of work process reporting, work center communications, and interpersonal relations within the work center. TRM Data Interpretation. This course will give students an understanding of the basic principles and techniques involved in the statistical treatment of data, including the selection of data source, the design of statistical studies, the analysis of data, and the utilization of data. Students will gain experience in using data for decision-making in their respective professions. Prerequisite: UCC mathematics requirement. TRM Managing for Quality. The course focuses on management techniques used to upgrade the level of quality of products and services in organizations. Topics cover the processes of continuous quality improvement: strategies and objectives, quality measures, participative management practices, worker empowerment, customer preferences and expectations, vendor/supplier inputs, process technology outputs, integrated feedback loops, and quality audits and review. Prerequisite: 364 and 383. TRM Project Management. This course is designed to provide students with an overview of the project management process followed by an in-depth examination of the activities needed to successfully initiate, plan, schedule, and control the time and cost factors of the project from a technical management perspective. Prerequisite: 464; Graduating senior status. TRM Support Courses TRM Labor-Management Relations. Students will gain a general understanding of the economic situation of which labormanagement problems represent a subset. They will develop a perspective on the evolution of labor relations in the United States economy and on how the interaction of labor and management differs throughout the world. The collective bargaining section introduces the student to the techniques of bargaining used by labor and management in their ongoing interactions. TRM Fiscal Aspects of Technical Management. An introduction to fiscal structures and problems encountered in the technically oriented enterprise. (Topics include, but are not limited to, interpreting financial statements, forecasting, budgeting, ratio analysis, strategic analysis, and special tools such as break-even analysis and relationships between quality, productivity, and personnel.) TRM Legal Aspects of Technical Management. An introduction to the types of legal problems encountered in the technically oriented enterprise. (Topics include, but are not limited to, contracts, civil and criminal liability, government relations, bankruptcy, and labor law.) TRM Professional Development. Introduces students to the various elements involved in obtaining a position in their chosen career field. Topics included are: personal inventories, placement services, employment agencies, interviewing techniques, resumes, letters of application, references, services, and employment tests. Each student will develop a portfolio including personal and professional information related to individual career goals. TRM Technology and International Trade. International trade is studied by examining the technology development and transfer concerns of transnational corporations and national governments in industrialized, newly industrialized and developing countries. TRM Technology and Management of Sustainable Enterprises. Focuses on the technology and business principles found in the growing sector of environmentally green enterprise. A variety of sustainable business practices will be studied. Optional Specialization in Professional Construction Management (PCM) [not available in all locations] TRM Professional Construction Mgmt: Intro & Professional Practice. Initial course in the Professional Construction Management (PCM) specialization series for the TRM curriculum. Participants will develop an understanding of the wide range of opportunities for PCM, explore applicable standards of practice, industry based code of ethics, interact with allied and associated organizations, identify certification requirements, and understand the technical challenges of PCM. TRM PCM: Program Management. Explore project scope and delivery methods, compensation, forms, contract types during program phase, pre-design, and preconstruction management. Identify importance of contract delivery, administration, documentation, and control across all project phases from concept through facilities management and de-construction. Project performance, stakeholder decisions, documentation tools, and applications are examined. TRM PCM: Budget & Cost Management. Provide overview of various estimating tools and methods for managing budgets, project estimates, and costs during program, construction and facilities management phases. Identify roles and responsibilities for controlling and monitoring project cost. Identify and develop methods for creating valid project estimates and budgets. Explore Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) for budget and cost management.

5 TRM PCM: Time, Value & Risk Management. Overview of management issues and scheduling for a project. Explain importance of time and risk management in construction and construction business. Study how fundamentals of scheduling, liability, and value are interrelated and explore impacts on project, scope, and budgets. Apply constructability, sustainability, return on investment strategies, quality management terms and definitions throughout project phases. TRM PCM: Construction Safety Management. Introduce principles of safety and health in the construction industry and their relationship to Professional Construction Management (PCM). Includes identification of safety and health hazards, risk reduction measures, personal protection, and safety attitudes and training. Explore Occupational Safety and Health Regulations for Construction. TRM PCM: Construction Project Management. This is a two-part course beginning with an overview of the project management process followed by a more in-depth examination of the activities needed to successfully initiate, plan, schedule, and control the time, schedule, scope, and cost factors of a project. The second part of the course conducts a more focused and in-depth application to the PCM process and services. Approved substitution for TRM 470.
