6 ECHOLOGY AD What you should know about standards All industrial plugs and socket-outlets are governed by the international European standard IEC/E his standard contains general quality rules (performance criteria, testing ) that all plugs and socketoutlets should comply with in order not to endanger the safety of people and property. Regardless of their techniques (pin and sleeve contacts, butt-style contacts, flat contacts, ) all plugs and sockets throughout the world have to comply with the general quality rules of the IEC/E standard. One category of industrial plugs and socket-outlets using the brass pin and sleeve contact technology with harmonised configurations is governed by a specific standard: IEC/E It is a special standard for this particular plug socket-outlet; it sets dimensional rules enabling a manufacturer s male plug to connect to another manufacturer s female socket-outlet and vice versa. So far, there are needs for over 70 different electrical supplies in the industrial world (voltage, frequency, AC and DC currents), based on the requirements of the application, plus major constraints associated with environments: chemical, food-processing, mining, etc. However the IEC/E standard limits by definition both the number of contact configurations available and the technology to meet the demands of industry. Marechal opted out of the optional IEC/E6009- dimensional standard of brass pin and sleeve technology in preference for silvernickel tip butt contact technology. Marechal has been manufacturing a real alternative to connector users for over fifty years offering safety and electrical performance in strict compliance with the obligatory industrial connector standards around the world. HE MAI DIFFERECES Operation of a DECOACOR M When a DECOACOR is connected, its high safety technology makes any accident impossible Just pressing with the finger on the button will switch off the DECOACOR. he plug then travels back automatically into a parked position. A quarter of a turn (to the left for the DS and DS; to the right for the D) is enough to separate the plug from the socket-outlet. his is done very safely since the device has been switched off. he plug and socket-outlet are then separated. hanks to the safety shutter located in front of the socket-outlet (for the DS and DS), live parts are inaccessible to touch and contact by wires exceeding mm in diameter (IP4X lid open). 4 Decontactors are industrial plugs and socket-outlets using the silver-butt contacts instead of the brass pins and sleeves. Moreover, they have an integral switching device allowing to make and break mixed resistive and inductive loads in complete safety, as specified in the international standard, IEC/E 6009-, clause.8 for industrial plugs and socketoutlets as well as the international standard IEC/E for switches. High safety connection hanks to its integral switching device (AC /AC according to standard E ), the decontactor can safely connect and disconnect devices up to 50 A. Just pressing on the button will switch off the decontactor. hus, the plug is de-energised before it is removed. As it prevents any risk of drawing an electric arc formation upon removing the plug, this system provides total safety to the user. In the event of a short-circuit, the Marechal DECOACOR guarantees safe handling: it is the only industrial plug and socket-outlet that has successfully passed short-circuit closing tests (Allen Bradley High Current Lab, Wisconsin, U.S.A). Safety has been Marechal engineers goal from the start: from the locking pawl to the layout of the earth contact, from the safety shutter to the stop button each DECOACOR detail has been designed with optimum safety in mind. he safety shutter at the front of the socket-outlet (DS/DS/DX ranges) remains locked when the plug is pulled out... With this system, live parts are totally inaccessible by the user, even if the lid is not closed. In order to eliminate any electrocution hazard, the earth contact is always located in the centre of the Marechal DECOACOR, thereby preventing any accidental connection with a phase contact. When the plug is inserted and withdrawn, the earth contact makes first and breaks last in order to provide continuous earthing, as required for safe handling.
