It is a broad disciline that includes both basic research and the alication of research findings to everyday life. The CSUS Psychology Deartment offers an undergraduate rogram in General Psychology and graduate rograms in Counseling Psychology, General Psychology (with secific emhasis on Psychology Doctoral Prearation), and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, students may choose course work, fieldwork, and research exeriences that allow them to emhasize such areas as Clinical/Counseling, Cognitive, Develomental, Industrial/Organizational, Social, Personality, and Alied Behavior Analysis. The undergraduate rogram allows students to develo research skills and an understanding of the biological, cognitive, cultural, develomental and social asects of human behavior. Students have the oortunity to aly their knowledge and skills in the form of faculty-suervised research rojects and internshi/fieldwork exeriences. As such, it contains extensive human and animal research facilities. A Psychological Services Center rovides excellent learning oortunities for students in exerimental and counseling sychology. The six-room counseling suite is equied for audio and video recording of theray sessions, roviding counseling services for the community. Secial labs are available for research in ercetion, cognition, human develoment, behavior analysis and neuroscience. A sound-deadened room is used for slee research, and comuter-controlled systems are available for rogramming animal research studies. Comuters are available for data collection and analyses and for stimuli and survey develoment and resentation. Since indeendent study and fieldwork exeriences are an integral art of the sychology curriculum, the Psychology Deartment maintains close ties with the Sacramento community. Each year about 300 students do research rojects or work in various organizations and community service agencies such as the Suicide Prevention Service, Planned Parenthood, and the California Youth Authority. Other students do indeendent study courses on toics of secial interest to them, including biofeedback, neuroscience, cognition, cognitive develoment, visual ercetion, social sychology, industrial/organizational sychology, and slee. The Psychology Society, a club oen to all sychology students, and Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, jointly sonsor guest seakers and engage in various social activities throughout the year. Graduate Programs The Master of Arts rogram in Psychology is designed to rovide secialized education in the field of sychology. With an MA in Psychology, one can qualify for ositions similar to those associated with a BA, though at a higher level of resonsibility. Advisors lay an active role in the lanning rocess, and students are strongly encouraged to consult with faculty on a continual and intensive basis as soon as they begin their studies in the rogram. MA students can reare for doctoral study in any area of Psychology or secialize in areas such as Counseling or Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Students who are interested in ursuing graduate work at CSUS in sychology must obtain a Graduate Brochure from the Psychology Deartment office. This brochure is also available on the CSUS web site. The Graduate Brochure contains the deartment alication rocedures, including GRE requirements and the deartmental alication form. Although the rogram is based on a core set of requirements, the form of the rogram rovides for flexibility. While much material is covered in regular course offerings, the Deartment recognizes that secialized study and the develoment of certain tyes of skills must take lace on a one-to-one student-instructor basis. This includes research activities in the laboratory, field, or library; teaching activities; and volunteer work in community mental health agencies, government agencies, schools, and/or businesses. Academic credit under individualized study or fieldwork designations is available for these uroses. Secializations Counseling Psychology: The secialized degree otion in Counseling Psychology is designed for students desiring the Marriage and Family Theray (MFT) license. In addition to comleting the core courses and the culminating requirement for the MA degree, students must select the Counseling Psychology otion and comlete all of the courses meeting the educational requirements for the MFT license as set forth by the licensing board. Students should note that this degree otion is not aroriate for those lanning to ursue doctoral study in

4 sychology Clinical Psychology; students committed to this latter goal should (a) comlete a well-chosen set of other academic courses (including our quantitative and research courses), (b) obtain research exerience, and (c) work very closely with faculty advisors. Industrial/Organizational Psychology: This secialized degree otion is designed for students who wish to develo marketable career skills that allow them to aly sychological rinciles and research methods to work-related issues. Hiring classifications of our graduates include Test Validation and Develoment Secialist, Research Analyst, and Personnel Analyst. In addition to comleting the core courses and the culminating requirement for the MA degree, students must also select the Industrial/ Organizational Psychology otion. Doctoral Prearation: In the Doctoral Prearation track, students can create individual rograms in conjunction with the faculty to reare for doctoral rograms in a variety of secialized fields, such as Clinical, Cognitive, Develomental, Educational, Exerimental, Industrial/Organizational, Neuroscience, Quantitative, and Social Psychology. Admission Requirements Admission to graduate study in Psychology is selective, requiring comletion of uer division undergraduate sychology courses in statistics and research methods, with at least C grades in those courses, as well as a balanced and academically strong grou of uer division courses covering at least five different core academic areas of sychology (e.g., biological, clinical, cognitive, develomental, social). The uer division sychological research methods/statistics requirement is met by CSUS PSYC 101 and PSYC 102 or their equivalents at other universities. Uer division research methods/statistics courses from other universities must be reviewed and aroved for equivalency by the Deartment s Graduate Coordinator. The accetance model used by the Deartment equally weighs a comosite grade oint average (GPA), scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and letters of recommendation. Comosite GPA involves both overall GPA and the GPA of the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units, the latter weighed twice that of the former. GRE scores from the two Atitude and single Advanced Psychology exams are averaged. The three letters of recommendation are numerically scored on a scale from 1 (low) to 12 (high), and are averaged. Accetance criteria are based uon alicant scores over the ast several years, and will fluctuate somewhat from semester to semester as recent alicants are added to the ool. An adjunct method of admission is available for alicants with comlete files who are not selected via the above rocess: qualification through unclassified ost baccalaureate status, roviding the alicant meets university requirements for that status, takes secified course work, and maintains a secified minimum GPA. Students are advised to seek further information from the Psychology Deartment concerning this admission alternative. This method can be used only by alicants who have alied under the Standard Admission Plan described below, have generated a comlete alication file with the Deartment, have satisfactorily comleted all of the required rearatory course work listed in the Graduate Brochure, and have fallen below the Deartment s admission criterion. Admission Procedures Alicants must obtain a Psychology Deartment Graduate Brochure containing the deartmental alication materials, and must comlete both arts of the alication rocess by March 1 for fall semester admission or by November 1 for sring semester admission. Each rosective graduate student, including CSUS graduates, must file the following with the Office of Graduate Studies, River Front Center 206, (916) : an online alication for admission; and two sets of official transcrits from all colleges and universities attended, other than CSUS. At the same time, each alicant must send the following directly to the Psychology Deartment: a comleted alication form from the Psychology Deartment Graduate Brochure; one set of official transcrits from all colleges and universities attended, including CSUS transcrits; official coies of the General and Psychology Graduate Record Examination* scores (be aware that it takes aroximately six weeks from the test date for scores to be forwarded); and three letters of recommendation from individuals who can evaluate the alicant s otential for successful graduate study. *The General GRE (available now only as a comuterized test) must have been taken by the alication deadline. If you intend to take a Psychology GRE that is scheduled at a time that falls shortly after our deadline, lease contact the Deartment to determine if we will accet results of that exam. Advancement to Candidacy Each student must file an alication for Advancement to Candidacy, indicating a roosed rogram of graduate study. This rocedure should begin as soon as the classified graduate student has: removed any deficiencies in admission requirements; comleted at least 12 units of 200-level courses in the graduate rogram with a minimum 3.0 GPA; selected a Thesis or Project committee; obtained the committee s aroval of a roosal for the thesis or roject (as indicated by committee members signatures on the deartment s thesis/ roject aroval form); and assed the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) or secured aroval for a WPE waiver. california state university, sacramento sychology / 567

Requirements Master of Arts Degree Industrial/Organizational Psychology Otion The field of Industrial/Organizational Psychology (I/O Psychology) covers all asects of sychology in the worklace, including such sub-toics as: organizational develoment, leadershi, erformance evaluation, ersonnel selection, test validation and develoment, work teams, training and ersonality influences. The Industrial/Organizational Psychology Concentration at CSUS is designed to give broad-based training in the relevant content areas as well as rovide a strong methodological background. Students obtaining the Master s degree should be reared for a career as a ersonnel manager, a testing secialist, a member of an I/O consulting grou; they should also be reared for further graduate work at the doctoral level. By meeting all of the requirements for the degree, students will have met the master s level educational cometencies identified by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Scientific Thinking in Psychology. Scientific thinking is the rocess of thinking logically, critically and creatively about real, as oosed to imaginary, roblems. Students will develo an understanding of the scientific thinking rocess from a sychological ersective and will develo skill in scientific thinking. Toics will include the sychology of thought, logical oerations and fallacies, convergent and divergent thinking, the relationshi between language and thought, valid and invalid arguments, logic and robability, decision making, and hyothesis testing in the science of sychology. 3 units. Consideration of unresolved issues of interest to sychology and the general ublic, such as the use of animals in research and mind and health. PSYC 108. Organizational Psychology. Exloration of the dynamics of human behavior in organizations, using the lens of sychological theory. Designed both for graduate students who are interested in gaining knowledge about the fundamental rinciles of behavioral sychology and those who are ursuing certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
