1 hysical theray master of hysical theray certificate of clinical cometency Program Descrition The mission of the Sacramento State Deartment of Physical Theray is to educate cometent hysical theraist generalist ractitioners who demonstrate ethical, resonsible, rofessional behavior, use evidence derived from research as a base for ractice, are sensitive to cultural and sycho-social differences, utilize critical thinking and roblem solving, ractice life long learning, and rovide services that contribute to the otimal health and function of the residents of the communities they serve. Physical Theray at Sacramento State is one of several rofessional curricula in the College of Health and Human Services. The rogram comlements others in the College and rovides oortunities for research, instructional collaboration, and interaction. The curriculum of years, including summers, encomasses didactic instruction, laboratory exerience, and clinical education. The clinical comonent consists of thirty weeks of full-time, off-camus clinical internshis leading to a Certificate of Clinical Cometence in Physical Theray. The Master s in Physical Theray at Sacramento State has been granted accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Theray Education/APTA. The Commission can be contacted for questions at 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA , (703) Comuter facilities are available for self-guided and interactive learning exeriences. Notes: Admission is for fall semester only. Classes are offered rimarily during daytime hours, and full-time study is required. Admission Requirements Alicants must: have received (or will receive by the end of the summer semester) a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; have comleted all rerequisite course work by the January 15th deadline with the excetion of four courses. These remaining courses must be comleted in the sring and/or summer semester (a maximum of two of these courses may be comleted during the summer); have a minimum of 2.5 GPA for the last 60 semester units; have a minimum of 3.0 GPA in the rerequisite course work; have accumulated and documented a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer or aid exerience in at least two hysical theray settings (inatient, outatient, home, SNF, etc.) under the direct suervision of a licensed hysical theraist; submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (analytical, quantitative, and verbal) by January 15th; and alicants who do not ossess a bachelor s degree from a ost secondary institution where English is the rincial language must demonstrate cometence in English by scoring a minimum of 550 (213 if comuter-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). 528 / hysical theray california state university, sacramento

2 hysical theray Admission Procedures All rosective graduate students, including Sacramento State graduates, must file the following with the Office of Graduate Studies, River Front Center 206, (916) : an online alication for admission; and official transcrits from all colleges and universities attended, other then Sacramento State. Students may download the Physical Theray Alication at or request the alication (available in October) by sending a self-addressed, 9" x 12" manila enveloe, with ostage attached to: Admissions Committee Deartment of Physical Theray California State University, Sacramento 6000 J Street Sacramento, CA Submit the Physical Theray Alication and all suorting documents to the Deartment of Physical Theray no later than January 15th of the year of anticiated enrollment. Only 32 students will be selected for admission each fall. The selection committee reviews alicants based on rerequisite GPA, written narrative, letters of recommendation, and an interview. Alications from students from diverse backgrounds are encouraged. Additional Information Health Requirements Students admitted to the graduate rogram in the Deartment of Physical Theray are required to have secified immunizations by the Student Health Center or a rivate hysician rior to beginning the rogram. Comlete information on health requirements for Physical Theray students may be secured from the Physical Theray Deartment office. Costs and Fees In addition to University registration fees, students can be exected to incur costs of aroximately $1,500 er year for books, sulies, malractice/liability insurance, and laboratory fees. Students are required to assume resonsibility for transortation and housing costs for clinical internshis which may be anywhere in California. Health Insurance, Transortation Schedules, CPR Certification, and Background Screens All students acceted into the graduate rogram in the Deartment of Physical Theray must rovide their own health insurance and transortation to clinical facilities. Health insurance is mandatory rior to beginning clinical exeriences. CPR certification (Basic Adult and Pediatric) is required at the time of fall enrollment and recertification must be maintained according to the requirements of the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Malractice/liability insurance is required rior to any clinical lacement. Information on malractice/liability insurance may be secured from the Physical Theray Deartment office. Students will be required to comlete (at their own exense) a criminal background check rior to clinical lacements. A ositive criminal history may reclude student articiation in the clinical courses. Advancement to Candidacy Each student must file an alication for Advancement to Candidacy indicating a roosed rogram of graduate study. This rocedure may begin as soon as the classified graduate student has: removed any deficiencies in admission requirements; successfully comleted all first year courses with a minimum of 3.0 overall grade oint average in all graduate level course work; successfully comleted the first clinical education exerience; formulated an aroved written lan for the required graduate roject ortfolio; and assed the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) or secured aroval of a WPE waiver. Required Certificate Courses (15 units) (3) PT 300 Clinical Practicum I (4) PT 400A Clinical Practicum II (4) PT 400B Clinical Practicum III (4) PT 400C Clinical Practicum IV Requirements Certificate of Clinical Cometency The Certificate of Clinical Cometency requires the comletion of a total of 30 weeks of full-time clinical exeriences assigned by the hysical theray curriculum, under the direct and immediate suervision of a licensed hysical theraist, in a facility with a signed clinical contract with Sacramento State. The first clinical affiliation of 6 weeks occurs between the first and second year of the master s hysical theray curriculum and is oen to those students who have successfully comleted the first year in the curriculum. The second art of the clinical certification requirement involves affiliations totaling 24 weeks of full time exerience following the successful comletion of the second year in the hysical theray master s curriculum. The certificate will be awarded following documentation by clinical faculty of students consistent demonstration of safe, entry-level cometencies in a rescribed number of clinical areas, as determined by the ACCE, the rogram Director, faculty, and the national accrediting body. Uer Division Course PT 199. Secial Problems. Individual rojects or directed reading designed for students caable of indeendent study. Note: Admission requires written aroval of instructor and rogram director. Graded Credit/No Credit. 1-3 units. Graduate Courses PT 200. Pathokinesiology. Addresses functional anatomy to assist in the understanding of athological function of the musculoskeletal system. The student will be exosed to alication of the rinciles of biomechanics, arthrology and tissue mechanics in combination with functional anatomy to the study of normal comared to athological motion. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 5 units. PT 202. Research Methods in Physical Theray I. Designed to teach students how to utilize their rerequisite course work in statistics for critical reading and interretation of the hysical theray scientific literature. Toics will include research designs and statistical testing rocedures commonly used in hysical theray. Students will review and critique current hysical theray articles that utilize the research designs being studied. Note: Oen to Physical PT 204. Princiles of Human Movement. Comonents of normal movement, contemorary concets of motor control, and their alication to hysical theray ractice. Includes a review of neuroanatomy for normal movement. Note: Oen to Physical PT 206. Theraeutic Measurements and Techniques. General hysical theray evaluation and atient management skills acquisition. Students will ractice and demonstrate techniques under faculty suervision in the following areas: measurement of vital signs, manual strength testing, evaluation of joint range of motion, atient ositioning, transfer techniques, gait training, use of wheelchairs, assistive devices. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 4 units. PT 208. PT/Patient Professional Interactions. Preares students to learn about themselves, others, and about the world in which they will interact with others as hysical theray ractitioners. Addresses self-awareness, effective communication, assertiveness, cultural sensitivity, resolving moral dilemmas, sychosocial asects of disability, death and dying, stress management, and health behaviors. 4 hysical theray record review and the fundamentals of rofessional documentation. Designed to assist students with the rocess of transitioning into rofessional roles as healing ractitioners. Note: Oen to Physical PT 220. Theraeutic Exercise I. Students ractice and demonstrate the clinical alication of basic level exercise regimens for the revention of limitations, imrovement of functional abilities and the treatment of disorders associated with the neuromuscular, skeletal and cardioulmonary systems, reading and interretation of ECGs, alication of motor control rinciles to exercise and aquatic theray. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 3 units. PT 222. Research Methods in Physical Theray II. Designed to build uon the data analysis and research design covered in PT 202. Initial ortion of the course will cover research methodologies tyically used in hysical theray, and lanning a hysical theray research roosal. In the second half of the course, students are required to send 50 hours of indeendent study to work on a hysical theray research roject with a faculty mentor. Lecture one hour. Indeendent study. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 1 unit. PT 224. Neurological Evaluation and Treatment I. First art of a two course series focusing on the acquisition and integration of knowledge and skills involved in develoing and imlementing a treatment lan for the atient with neurologic dysfunction based on sound evaluative findings. The course includes correlating neuroanatomical foundations with neurologic dysfunction. Case resentation, video demonstrations and actual atient contact will be used to develo evaluation, treatment and roblem-solving skills. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 4 units. PT 225. Musculoskeletal Evaluation and Treatment I. Acquisition and integration of knowledge and skills involved in develoing and imlementing a treatment lan for the atient with musculoskeletal dysfunction based on sound evaluative findings. Lectures address etiology, signs and symtoms, medical, surgical, and hysical theray management of musculoskeletal dysfunction. Labs address skill develoment for erforming evaluation and treatment techniques safely and effectively. This course is the first of two and addresses the management of lower extremity dysfunction. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 4 units. PT 226. Clinical Agents. Presents theory, demonstration and laboratory ractice in hysical theray modalities and techniques including thermal agents, hydrotheray, ultrasound (US), ultraviolet, diathermy and massage. Theory, demonstration and ractice will be included of functional neuromuscular electrical stimulation, US/stimulation combination, iontohoresis, TEN s and clinical electro hysiologic testing; EMG as an evaluative and treatment tool. Case Studies will be utilized for decision making in the roer alication of modalities based on knowledge of indications, contraindications and hysiologic effects. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 3 units. PT 227. Physical Theray Educator. Role of the hysical theraist as educator. Basic teaching and learning theory, learning domains, the identification of learning styles, and teaching strategies to address different learner needs across the life-san. Students will ractice instructional formats; reare hysical theray atient education materials; and ractice alications of aroriate technology for the design of rofessional resentations. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 1 unit. PT 240. Theraeutic Exercise II. Continuation of Theraeutic Exercise I. Students will ractice and demonstrate advanced clinical exercise skills for rogressing a atient oulation and to demonstrate regimens for the revention of limitations, imrovement of functional abilities and the treatment of disorders associated with the neuromuscular, skeletal and cardioulmonary systems. Theraeutic techniques addressing secific atient oulations including ob-gyn, ediatrics and geriatrics will be included. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 3 units. PT 244. Neurological Evaluation and Treatment II. Second art of a two course series focusing on the acquisition and integration of knowledge and skills involved in develoing and imlementing a treatment lan for the atient with neurological dysfunction based on sound evaluative findings. Case resentation, video demonstrations and atient contact will be used to develo evaluation, treatment and roblem-solving skills. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 4 units. PT 245. Musculoskeletal Evaluation and Treatment II. Acquisition and integration of knowledge and skills involved in develoing and imlementing a treatment lan for atients with musculoskeletal dysfunction based on sound evaluative findings. Lectures address etiology, signs and symtoms, and medical surgical, and hysical theray management of musculoskeletal dysfunction. Labs address skill develoment for erforming evaluation and treatment techniques. This course is the second of two and addresses management of uer extremity dysfunction and sine dysfunction. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 4 units. PT 246. Secial Toics in Physical Theray I. Selected diagnostic and treatment toics used in hysical theray. Toics include: Evaluation and treatment of the client with a cardioulmonary disorder; evaluation and treatment of the client with cancer and hysical theray in the acute care setting. Note: Oen to Physical PT 248. Health Care Delivery in Physical Theray I. Historical overview of health care delivery and financing in the U.S., the hysical theraist s role in it, and how the evolving delivery and financing system is currently effecting the ractice of hysical theray. The continuum of care concet, an overview of national economic olicy and the mechanisms for financing hysical theray services will be resented. Administrative toics including human resources, financial management, lanning, marketing, atient s rights, and medical record management will be covered. Note: Oen to Physical PT 260. Graduate PT Seminar I. Advanced hysical theray clinical techniques. Students may choose two areas from a selection of current toics to be resented to them the first class session. Toics may include: advanced aquatics, ediatrics, advanced treatment of burns and wounds, vestibular rehabilitation, and advanced manual theray. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 1 unit. PT 262. Differential Diagnosis in Physical Theray. Advanced assessment techniques for hysical theray to detect medical roblems for which a referral to a medical doctor is indicated. Students will learn a atient evaluation system in addition to clinical signs and symtoms associated with dysfunction of various hysiologic systems. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 3 units. PT 264. Neuroediatric Evaluation and Treatment. Acquisition and integration of knowledge and skills involved in develoing and imlementing a treatment lan for the ediatric atient with neurological dysfunction based on sound evaluative findings. Case resentation, video demonstrations and actual atient contract will be used to develo evaluation, treatment and roblem-solving skills. Third course in a three art series. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 3 units. PT 266. Secial Toics in Physical Theray II. Selected diagnostic and treatment toics used in hysical theray. Toics included: Prosthetics and treatment of the atient with an amutation, treatment of the atient with a wound or burn injury. Case resentation, video demonstrations and actual atient contact will be used to develo evaluation, treatment and roblem-solving skills. Note: Oen to Physical PT 268. Health Care Delivery in Physical Theray II. Students will achieve working knowledge of ethical guidelines as established by the APTA s Code of Ethics and Guide for Professional Conduct, the California PT Practice Act and Regulations, and become familiar with the structure and function of the Physical Theray Board of California. 5 background in related areas of healthcare delivery, or trends affecting the ractice of hysical theray. Note: Oen to Physical PT 269. Psychosocial Issues in Physical Theray. Examines sychological and social imact of and reactions to illness and hysical disability. Exlores fundamental elements of the sychosocial dynamics related to disability with a focus on adjustments required of both the disabled and the rovider. Investigates social, cultural, ersonal, sexual, and familial factors which imact comrehensive rehabilitation in the clinical setting. Emhasis will be laced on illness and hysical disability during the geriatric ortion of the life san. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 1 unit. PT 280. Graduate PT Seminar II. Presented after the final clinical field exerience, will review students exeriences in the clinic and romote reflection on the rofessional ractice of hysical theray. Serves as a review of a variety of hysical theray subjects in rearation for the licensure examination. Students will use comuter interactive software to assist with rearation for this standardized national test format. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only. 1 unit. PT 295. Physical Theray Clinical Exerience. Suervised clinical affiliation equivalent to two full-time weeks u to six fulltime weeks in a hysical theray setting under the direct suervision of a licensed Physical Theraist. Note: Placement is arranged through the Program. Permission of Clinical Coordinator required. Graded Credit/No Credit. 1-3 units. PT 299. Secial Problems. PT 300. Clinical Practicum I. Students imrove and refine evaluation and treatment abilities develoed during their first year and integrate knowledge and skills in a selected variety of clinic settings. Note: Oen to Physical Theray majors only who have successfully comleted the first year of the master s curriculum. Graded Credit/ No Credit. 3 units. PT 400A. Clinical Practicum II. This comonent of the PT 400 clinical certificate series totals 8 weeks of rogressively resonsible full-time clinical education in an inatient, outatient, long term care, home health care, or ediatric setting under direct suervision of a licensed PT. Students imrove, refine and master evaluation and treatment abilities develoed during Physical Theray master s curriculum.
