1 E mployee and Company Reviews We conduct employee reviews every February-March. Prior to meeting with each of the employees, we consolidate the metrics kept on the employees and their projects. We also ask employees to review (on paper) each other, Andy, and me. The results are very interesting. They don't always match my thoughts and those of each employee. Most of them think they are "Top Dog". When we list the profitability of each of their projects and their labor usage, they are often surprised. It always surprises me what each of the guys thinks about one other. We rate each other numerically on a standard set of metrics (organization, management, safety, and so on); we take that information and average the ratings. We also, anonymously, ask everyone to list each others' strengths and opportunities for improvement and they list one or two things that the rated employee should teach the rest of the crew. Suggestions include things like Paul is excellent at installing vinyl shower pans under the tile shower floors and Ray excels at job site notes. These become topics that Paul and Ray will teach the rest of the company at future staff meetings. The guys also rate Andy and me, although I think they tend to be a little diplomatic in those ratings.

2 These 360 reviews coincide with our twice a year meeting of the RPG s (Remodeler Peer G roup). This is a group of fellow remodeling company owners from all over the east coast. We meet twice a year to share our financial information and our successes and challenges. We advise each other and develop commitments to be completed by the next meeting. The insights and recommendations that result from these get-togethers are invaluable. Is there a success involving one of our guys that you'd like to tell us about? Random Stuff I know you love those telemarketing phone calls But, just in case you don't, I've learned that you can just press "2" on your phone and your number is supposed to be removed from that company's call list. I'm not positive that it actually works, but there is something satisfying when the spiel stops immediately and the call disconnected. Try it...you'll like it!
