National Strategy Conference on Combating Child Exploitation Partners in Protection & Prevention A Joint Conference of Project Safe Childhood & the ICAC Program May 17-20, 2011 San Jose Convention Center San Jose, California Just by attending this conference, Attorney General Eric Holder told the attendees of the 2011 National Strategy Conference on Combating Child Exploitation, We are making history!
Conference Highlights This three and a half day Conference brought together nearly 1,300 investigators, agents and prosecutors from all levels of government for state-of-the-art workshops on everything from investigative techniques and digital forensics to victim advocacy and community outreach. The Conference was a resounding success, with 90% of attendees reporting a very high evel of satisfaction with the training. The Opening Ceremony and Plenary Session included special guest speakers: The Honorable James Cole, Deputy Attorney General; The Honorable Melinda Haag, United States Attorney for the Northern District of California; Francey Hakes, National Coordinator for Child Exploitation Prevention and Interdiction; Diane Urban, the Assistant Chief of the San Jose Police Department; and Joe Sullivan and Graham Hill from Mentor Forensic Services located in London, UK. I was very impressed with the Conference; I have been in law enforcement for about 15 years and believe that this conference was the best I have attended yet. Thanks. The Awards Luncheon featured a very special guest, The Honorable Eric H. Holder, Jr., Attorney General of the United States, who awarded various individuals and agencies for extraordinary work against child exploitation. The Honorable Eric H. Holder, Jr. Attorney General of the United States Attendees were treated to an advanced screening of Trust, a movie based on a true story, written and directed by David Schwimmer and staring Academy Award nominees Clive Owen, Catherine Keener and Viola Davis. The movie examined the life of a suburban family and how their lives were forever changed when their daughter s online friend was not who he claimed to be. 1
About the Conference The 2011 Conference offered a wide range of topics and opportunities to get some hands on learning in lab sessions as well as some very interesting lectures and case studies. The Conference was one of the largest events related to the prevention, investigation and prosecution of crimes against children committed via the Internet. The purpose of the Conference was to promote cooperation and collaboration between federal, state, tribal and local investigators and prosecutors. This year s conference was sponsored by the Department of Justice s Project Safe Childhood Initiative and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Program. You do an excellent job. My only complaint is that there are too many good classes. Each year it is difficult to decide what classes I want to take. Your organization of an event so large is outstanding. Thank you! Attendance at the 2011 National Conference remained steady from the prior year s Conference, indicating a sustained need for the training presented. However, poor economic conditions did preclude many individuals from attending. A post-conference survey indicated that an additional 835 individuals would have attended the Conference had funding been available. Together, these facts highlight the importance of this Conference, and the need to continue to fund these training programs for our Nation s criminal justice community. 2
Conference Attendance With representation from forty-nine states and seven countries, Conference attendees comprised a diverse group with a common cause the elimination and prevention of technology-facilitated crimes committed against children showed another strong year for Conference attendance, with almost 1,300 participants. Number of Conference Attendees Prosecutors 14% Attendees by Job Function Forensic Examiners 2% Administrative 7% Sheriff/Chief /Director 2% 1,401 1,205 1, The training I received would have taken 5 years to receive if I hadn t attended. Attendees by Agency Investigators/ Officers 81% Non-Profit 1% Tribal 2% International 3% Federal 17% City / Local / County 57% State 21% 3

2012 National Conference We anticipate that the 2012 National Conference will break past attendance records. With a capacity for 2,000 attendees, the 2012 National Conference has the potential to be the largest ever. Hosted in the accessible city of Atlanta, attendees will be able to easily travel in and out thanks to the nearby international airport and superior ground transportation system. Attendees will also enjoy lodging arrangements at a rate lower than government per diem, and located in the same facility as the meeting space. The 2012 National Conference will continue to lead the industry with innovative and cutting-edge training programs. Attendees will have their choice of classes, with full days of training programs. Due to the demand for more focused lab training in specific areas, we will be offering a pre-conference track of specialized training. Attendees will come away with a functional understanding that they can immediately utilize on the job. Hyatt Regency Atlanta April 16-19, 2012 Atlanta, GA This past year was the first time I attended the conference and I enjoyed it. Overall it was an eye opener for me and look forward to attending in
