Progression to BSc Conservation and Wildlife Management L6 is available on passing the FdSc Conservation and Wildlife Management, with no bridging unit required (From Sept progression will be to BSc Hons Ecology and Conservation Management). 16. Employability Statement Sparsholt College benefits from a high profile locally, regionally and nationally in the land-based industries, and has been recognised as a provider of high quality vocational education and training through the three Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) awarded to the College in Animal Management and Veterinary Nursing, Fishery and Wildlife Management and in Leadership and Business Management. The College is also an accredited Action for Business College reflecting the extensive links with employers. The College maintains close links with lead industry bodies including Natural England, the Wildlife Trusts, Forestry Commission, RSPB, and many local and specialised conservation organisations. These links ensure our courses incorporate the skills and understanding required by the employers. A key strength of the provision at Sparsholt College is the link to employers in developing a higher level vocational curriculum. The course enjoys many and varied inputs from employers in the conservation industry. Work Practice placements are offered country-wide by most of the main conservation employers, and by many smaller ones. Visits to sites led by site managers occur throughout the course but especially at level 5. Practical conservation tasks are undertaken at a variety of external sites, arranged in conjunction with and part supervised by staff of conservation organisations. Units enhancing the employability skills of students specific to the conservation industry include: Natural History 1, which focuses on developing animal and plant identification expertise; Conservation Management which includes a varied programme of CV-enhancing practical management tasks and skills development carried out in conjunction with conservation organisations and employers, and covers health and safety and the writing of risk assessments for conservation work. The Work Placement units develop student s personal development portfolios and career management skills. This may, for example, be through seminars and tutorials to develop career decision-making strategies and strategies for self presentation at application stages and at interview. Part and full time students are likely to be gaining employability skills through work-place learning opportunities. It is expected that some full time students will already be working in the industry (or an associated industry) on a part-time basis and other prospective students will be encouraged to gain experience of the industry through voluntary work or part time employment. Students will be aware of the importance of voluntary work and of extra-curricular activities to develop the skills needed by employers and the industry. Employers will be involved in specialist Programme Specification for FdSc Conservation and Wildlife Management Page 6

11 All academic staff are required to seek Higher Education Academy Fellowship and/or participate in the University of Portsmouth APEX programme Academic staff new to teaching required to undertake New Teaching Staff Induction Support Staff are encouraged to attend short courses in areas such as specific IT packages 20. Assessment Strategy The college recognises formative assessment as an integral and required element of the learning process. Penalties for non-completion of formative assessment may range from grade penalties on summative assessments to withdrawal of services. See Sparsholt Policy on Higher Education Student Performance and Conduct. Level 4 (applies to part time students only for 2013/14). In view of the high course enrolment of mature students who have been out of education for years, and also those with few formal qualifications, the assessment strategy is heavily weighted towards coursework, for which we offer formative perusal of draft assignments before submission. One formal examination and three class tests enable students to develop examination skills and develop confidence. Coursework at L4 includes a range of assignments designed to develop the scientific writing skills of the students and include descriptive, experimental, fieldwork and data-related reports as well as essays in which more integration, appraisal and evaluation of information is expected. The students thus have the opportunity to develop these skills at L4 in preparation for L5 when a greater proportion of the assignments will require an analytical approach in addition to descriptive material. Level 5 (applies to part time students only for 2014/15) Assessment at L5 includes two formal exams and a class test to enhance students exam techniques in preparation for progression to Level 6, if desired. The coursework assignments maintain the number of presentations in order for students to practice these important employability skills. The integrative and evaluative aspects of all tasks set are increased, even when they are a report rather than an essay in style. For example, a site management plan is designed for Wildlife Conservation, and a report on species autecology in relation to conservation requirements is an assignment for Ecological Science 2. Extensive feedback is given on all assignments, to act as formative information for future work. 21. Assessment Regulations Rules apply as stated in the Collaborative Examination and Assessment Regulations for Sparsholt College. 22. Role of Externals Subject External Examiners who will: oversee unit assessment and usually attend Unit Assessment Boards (UAB); review unit assessment strategy; sample assessment artefacts; present report to UABs, as well as a written report. Award External Examiners (usually also a Subject External Examiner) who will: oversee and attend Award/Progression (Examination) Boards; scrutinise and endorse the outcomes of assessment; Programme Specification for FdSc Conservation and Wildlife Management Page 9

12 ensure that the standard of the award is maintained at a level comparable with that of similar awards elsewhere in the United Kingdom. 23. Indicators of Standards and Quality A. Professional Accreditation/Recognition n/a B. Periodic Programme Review (or equivalent) The outcomes from the periodic Review in January 2014 confirmed fitness of purpose of curriculum, it also found the annual monitoring and review processes effective. The key strengths of provision were as follows; The college is clearly responsive to feedback received from the external examiners, students and the University. Clear evidence of critical and evaluative reviews of the provision to enhance the student experience. Wide breadth of curriculum to reflect the complex and diverse sector areas. Having practitioners on the teaching team is clearly advantageous to students. C.
