1 Backup in a Virtual Environment with Tandberg Data using RDX QuikStation and Tape Automation Virtual environments are growing in the SMB market. 2 Configurations RDX QuikStation To use BizNAS as a Backup Repository, it must be introduced to Veeam Backup & Replication as a Unix Server. Use the web interface to configure the RDX QuikStation and select the operation mode. F or backup to removable disk choose RDX Drive (8 RDX drive targets). For security reasons, activation of CHAP authentication is recommended with iscsi connections. Click on all 8 RDX drives and enter username and password in the security section. p.2

3 BACKUP REPOSITORY FOR BizNAS Veeam Backup & Replication Server or Veeam Repository Server can connect to the 8 RDX bays in the RDX QuikStation via the Microsoft iscsi Initiator. Begin by starting the Microsoft iscsi Initiator. Enter the IP Address of your QuikStation as the target and click on Quick Connect. All 8 RDX bays of the RDX QuikStation will appear. To connect, click Connect. Choose Advanced and check the Enable CHAP log on box. Type in a CHAP-password in Target secret field. Windows Disk Manager will display the status of all RDX QuikStation bay upon insertion of an RDX cartridge into any RDX bay. For the best possible results, all 8 bays should contain an RDX cartridge. Then assign a drive letter to each bay via the Windows Disk Manager. p.3

4 Veeam Initial Setup The verification option will need to be disabled to prevent Veeam from verifying each backup run. This will avoid a possible error condition if a media rotation scheme is used with the RDX QuikStation. To disable the verification option to enable media job rotation, modify the following value (see screen on the left) in the Registry for Veeam Backup and Replication. For each Bay/Media in the QuikStation, a repository will be created which can be selected as a target for backup jobs. Choose type of backup repository. Choose backup server. p.4

5 BACKUP Job Settings Choose path of the repository where backup should be stored. Choose a name for the backup job. Choose the virtual machines to backup. p.5

6 Choose the backup repository created earlier. Restore and Activation The RDX QuikStation drives are recognized by Veeam as Removable Disk Devices which enable selection of a retention policy that specifies the number of restore points Veeam will retain on the RDX disk. In the example above, the most recent 14 restore points will be retained on the RDX cartridge and Veeam will indicate the total number of restore points that are available on the existing cartridge. When a new RDX cartridge is introduced, Veeam will indicate zero available restore points and initiate a new backup operation. Activation of the Reverse Incremental backup method in advanced job settings is recommended. When Reverse Incremental is enabled and the RDX cartridge contains a previously-written backup, Veeam will automatically create another full backup to the RDX cartridge without it affecting previous backups. To overwrite or delete a previously-written backup (i.e., to make room for the next full backup), a manual deletion of backup jobs is required. To manually delete previous backup jobs, utilize the batch script shown on the left. This process can be automated to run at the beginning of every backup job by entering this script as a Pre-Backup-Script in advanced job settings. Another useful script is the postbackup media eject operation available for free The post-backup media eject script performs an automated cartridge eject upon job completion which is very useful for implementing a media rotation scheme for disaster recovery and off-site storage p.6

7 Configurations for Backup to Tape with Tandberg Data Tape Automation BACKUP REPOSITORY FOR RDX In our example, there is a tape library attached with two LTO drives. A media pool was created with two tape cartridges (see steps below). The corresponding library and tape drive drivers have been installed. Media Pool Veeam automatically detects the attached tape libraries. To write backups to tape, you have to define media pools which contains all or a selected number of tapes in the library. Define name and description of the media pool. Choose a number of tapes. p.7

9 Choose the media pool created in the steps above. A FINAL RECOMMENDATION A final recommendation: store a replica of the Veeam Backup Server on an RDX cartridge in the QuikStation or in an off-site location. This replica of the Veeam Backup Server can be mounted directly from an RDX cartridge accessible via iscsi to your ESX host which will enable the start of a restore operation within a few seconds and provide immediate access to your business-critical data and systems.
