6 What People Say about our Training Courses Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) An excellent course that I will recommend to everyone (March 2012) The trainer explained everything well & made me feel comfortable enough to ask questions & contribute. (July 2012) Very good course, enlightening. A good tool to use either professionally or in a personal capacity (January 2013) Communicating Effectively it s not what you think I loved the structure and pace of the course. Small group was more intimate and friendly. I came in tired and left energetic. Definitely exceeded my expectations. (April 2012) I thought it was a great course, one of the best training courses I have been to, thank you, also for helpful advice (October 2013) Very good course, will recommend at work (June 2014) Helping Smokers to Quit Very interesting course really enjoyed it and looking forward to putting it into practice and helping patients to stop smoking Trainers all had great knowledge and put the information across well - It was a very interesting course with lots of detailed information and very helpful (and friendly) tutors Very interesting, delivered in an engaging & interactive way Health Promotion Made Easy The course is lively and it was a good environment to learn. I will definitely use what I learnt personally and at work I can deliver health promotion in a very small way or a big way and it doesn t matter how I do it as long as I do, it all helps to promote healthy living It was excellent. I would recommend to other colleagues 6

7 Introduction to Motivational Interviewing It s a new concept and a new way of working It was a very well planned training that developed my knowledge on MI. I learnt so much more about it, so much more that will help me develop my practice considerably Excellent course delivered in a clear yet relaxed style, very conducive to learning, very enjoyable Mental Health First Aid I very much enjoyed the course. On a more personal level it was very helpful and informative. Would highly recommend this course for anyone who has experienced poor mental health, or a mental illness, or none, to give an awareness and understanding and hopefully be less judgemental as often we are. (September 2013) Excellent course! We had 2 fantastic instructors who made everyone feel comfortable and valued. They provided us with valuable information and gave myself a fantastic understanding of Mental Health (January 2014) Excellent training subject and content delivered by inspiring trainers who allowed and encouraged learning participation in a real, supportive & meaningful way. High quality training keep it up (March 2014) I found the course to be insightful, educational, emotional and informative. I think this course is great for anybody, especially people who lack understanding and personal experience in mental health, both in a personal and professional environment. I would recommend this course it is excellent. Great trainers Mike and Maria (June 2014) Training the Trainer Enjoyed watching and giving 3 mini presentations and was pleased to receive positive feedback I did not think from Day 1 that I would be eager to join in presenting but I find myself ready and willing to do so. I am learning and engaging I got very nervous, partially due to learning difficulties but I get a lot of reassurance from the trainer that it s ok and to keep learning Really enjoyed this course, it s fun and I have learnt a lot to use in life as well as at work 7

8 Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) 2 DAY COURSE 23 rd & 24 th April th & 8 th July am 5.00 pm Registration 8.45 am Charlton House Charlton Road London SE7 8RE The course was developed by the Canadian organisation LivingWorks and is recognised by the Department for Health. Full attendance during both days of the training is essential. Who is the course for? ASIST is a 2 day course teaching Suicide First Aid skills to anyone who may come into contact with a person at risk. Recognised by the Department of Health, it can be an effective tool for challenging stigma and taboo around suicide, helping to break down barriers between organisations and individuals working with people at risk. The skills can also be applied in many helping situations, not just where suicide is a risk. What does the training involve? The course uses small and large groups, and requires active participation by the participants. Flexible teaching styles, simulation exercises, learning aids and audio-visual materials encourage a high level of participation. Two highly acclaimed award winning videos are used exclusively in the course. Much of the learning occurs in small work groups. This format encourages the development of participation, trust, acceptance and mutual support. It breaks down barriers, focuses attention and heightens learning. For training goals, more information about ASIST and the trainers, refer to the Additional Information sheet. On completion of the course participants will receive a certificate of attendance, training workbook and related materials, Suicide Intervention Manual, information on local/national resources. Dress code is informal and due to the nature and intensity of the training, it is advisable that no other work activities are undertaken for the duration of the course. There has been extensive evaluation carried out on the effectiveness of ASIST in Scotland which found that: The evidence that we have gathered shows ASIST to be a high-quality, effective training programme that has achieved its aim and made an impact by raising awareness of suicide, and by improving the skills and willingness of a wide range of people to identify and help Individuals who may be at risk of suicide. Source: The workshop may not be suitable for individuals who have had a recent experience / bereavement from suicide or experiencing poor mental health. 8

9 Additional Information ASIST provides practical training for caregivers seeking to prevent the immedite risk of suicide. Participants often include: Workers in health, welfare or justice Community volunteers Mental health practictioners Counsellors, teachers and ministers Emergency service workers Natural helpers and advisors People concerned about family, friends The emphasis of the ASIST workshop is on suicide first aid, on helping a person at risk to stay safe and seek further help. The goals of the training are to enable participants to: 1. Recognise that caregivers/healthcare workers and persons at risk are affected by personal and societal attitudes about suicide 2. Discuss suicide with a person at risk in a direct manner 3. Identify risk alerts and develop a safe plan related to them 4. Demonstrate the skills required to intervene with a person at risk of suicide 5. List the types of resources available to a person at risk of suicide, including themselves 6. Make a commitment to improving community resources; and 7. Recognise that suicide prevention is broader than suicide first aid and includes life promotion and self-care for caregivers/healthcare workers. Who are the Trainers? The Trainers are from Alpha Plus Training who have over 20 years experience in delivering training in Mental Health and General Health & Wellbeing. Alpha Plus offers a diverse team of skilled trainers from a variety of backgrounds and experience including nursing and psychology; NHS mental health services; graduate lecturing in mental health; community development & service improvement and staff development. Mental Health First Aid is an educational course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help a person who may be developing a mental health problem. In the same way as we learn physical first aid, mental health first aid teaches you how to recognise those crucial warning signs of mental ill health, provide help and effectively guide towards the right support services. Good mental health is essential for living a happy and fulfilling life, yet in any year 1 in 4 British adults will experience a diagnosable mental health problem. The course provides an overview of common mental health problems, causes, symptoms and treatments, and teaches people how to: recognise distress recognise the difference between therapy and first aid be confident in administering help in a first aid situation provide initial help and guide a person towards appropriate support The aims of Mental Health First Aid are to: preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others provide help to prevent the mental health problems developing into a more serious state promote the recovery of good mental health provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem reduce stigma and discrimination through education Anyone could benefit from attending this course as it explores how we can recognise and support both ourselves and others who are experiencing poor mental health, including anxiety, depression and psychosis. It also examines the widespread stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health and attempts to involve everyone in the changes that need to happen. 12
