2 Attention Students! Curriculum Changes In Math In order to provide different math alternatives for students based on their program of study, the Math Department has developed pathways of courses. Students should ALWAYS consult with an advisor so that they take the appropriate courses for their degree. The following examples demonstrate potential options with the new curriculum: If you are planning to transfer to a four year institution studying in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) fields, you will likely need College Algebra - Math 130. If you do not place into College Algebra, the classes leading to it include Intermediate Algebra - Math 120, Beginning Algebra - Math 082 and Basic Mathematics - Math 021. If you are planning to transfer to a four year institution studying in non-stem or liberal arts fields, a math option would be to take Probability and Statistics - Math 150. If you do not place into Statistics, the classes leading to it include Intermediate Algebra and Statistics - Math 115, Applications Based Mathematics - Math 072, and Basic Mathematics - Math 021. If you are working on a technical degree (please review your program requirements), you may choose Technical Mathematics - Math 128. If you do not place into this class, the classes leading to it include Beginning Algebra - Math 082, and Basic Mathematics - Math 021. Math Requirements for General Education In order to meet the general education requirements for MCC in math, you must complete a 100 level math course or place into MATH-120 or higher. 3 Attention Students! Curriculum Changes Reading Placement Matters As part of our ongoing commitment to student success, all MCC courses now have a reading prerequisite. If you place into READ 016 or READ 030, please do not put off taking this course. You will be able to register for other courses, but depending on your field of study, courses may be limited until you complete the Reading class successfully. Contact an advisor for assistance. Accelerated classes listed below may be a good option for you. New ways to accelerate your completion of Reading and Writing requirements Two Different Options - See descriptions below and discuss them with your Advisor Academic Literacy ACLT (Academic Literacy) integrates reading and writing into a single course to provide a strong foundation for college success. Students who successfully complete ACLT 075 or 076 will be prepared to enter ENGL 101 and courses that require college level reading. ACLT-075 requires Placement into ENGL-098 or above and Reading 016 or above. Themes: ACLT st-Century Controversies ACLT The American Dream ACLT Careers ACLT-076 requires placement into ENGL-099 and RDNG-030. Theme: Strategies for College Success NOTE: These are accelerated classes and require a student commitment to working at a faster pace than traditional courses. Accelerated Learning Program The Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) allows students to enroll in ENGL-099-ALP, which is paired with an ENGL-101 section that meets on the same days with the same instructor. Students must enroll in both ENGL-099 ALP and its required and specifically designated ENGL-101 section. To be eligible to enroll in these courses, students must: Have been recommended for ENGL-099 based on the MCC Placement test OR Have successfully completed either ENGL-095 or ENGL-098, with a score of S9 Students meeting one of the above criteria can choose to enroll in an ENGL-099-ALP section that will support the work done in ENGL-101 in a smaller, personalized learning environment. This accelerated format allows students to complete the necessary developmental course (ENGL-099) while at the same time earning credit for ENGL-101, which is required for graduation. COLLEGE REGISTRATION POLICY By registering for classes at Mott Community College, you accept responsibility for reading and conforming to all policies, procedures, required dates, fees and other requirements published online, in the college catalog and in the class schedule book. 5 HOw TO APPLY for ADMISSION All students must apply for admission to Mott Community College before registering for a class. New Students 1. Complete an admission application. Apply online at You will be required to appear in person to the Admissions Office with a valid government issued ID. Applicants under the age of 22 need to request a high school transcript, to be sent to Mott Community College Admissions Office, 1401 East Court Street, Flint MI, Apply for financial Aid. Apply online at See page 7 for additional information. 3. Placement Testing All new degree or certificate seeking students are required to complete English, reading and math placement testing before registering for classes. Students who have taken the ACT test may bring copies of those scores, to testing, for consideration of having portions of the MCC placement test waived. The Testing & Assessment Center is located in PCC2010, (810) Placement testing is also available at Southern Lakes Branch Center (SLBC), Northern Tier and Lapeer extension sites. 4. Career Planning Mott Community College offers assistance with your career planning process. If you are unsure about your career path, you should first meet with and develop your career plans with a counselor. This allows you to establish a relationship with a faculty member knowledgeable in your major, to discuss career directions, and to plan a class schedule and select appropriate courses. Call the Academic Advising Center at (810) to speak with an Academic Advisor. Undecided and General Studies students should speak with a Counselor. Call the Counseling Center at (810) Academic Advising is also available at SLBC, NTC and Lapeer. 8. A valid government ID must be presented to the Admissions Office and you may be required to take a portion of the placement test. Returning students should also have their WebAdvisor password established or reset. Please dial (810) during normal business hours. Not Seeking A Degree Or Certificate? If you are not currently seeking a degree or a certificate, you may want to request Non-Candidate for Degree (NCFD) status in Admissions. You may request NCFD status and be exempt from placement testing and orientation unless you want to enroll in college level English or mathematics. For more information regarding NCFD status please speak to a representative from the Admissions Office or the Counseling and Student Development Office. Students with NCfD status are not eligible for financial aid. Transfer Students 1. Apply online. You will be required to appear in person to the Admissions Office with a valid government issued ID. Have an official transcript mailed directly from your previous college to the Registrar s Office. 2. Take a copy of your unofficial college transcripts to the Placement Testing Office for review. If you have completed English composition, math, and at least one content area class requiring extensive reading, you may not be required to take a placement test. 3. After you are admitted, you should see an academic advisor or counselor for assistance in planning your class schedule. 4. Be sure to obtain an MCC account and WebAdvisor sign-on and password. Guest Students Students Enrolled in Other Colleges: Students who are enrolled in other colleges and universities are invited to attend classes at MCC. Submit a completed Guest Application (available at all Michigan colleges and universities) with specific courses to be taken at MCC listed and signed by your advisor to the Admissions Office, PCC2140, or one of our other centers in Fenton (SLBC), Lapeer or Clio (the Northern Tier Center). 6 scripts) of meeting any prerequisites for classes they wish to take and may be required to take portions of the placement test. Guest Students are not eligible for financial aid. International Students International students should contact the Admissions Office for assistance in completing the required admission forms. All foreign-born students in the United States on student visas or who are not permanent residents or U.S. citizens are considered non-residents and are required to pay out-of-state tuition. Dual Enrollment & Early Admission for High School Students 1. Submit an online application at apply.mcc.edu. 2. Submit completed certification form from your high school 3. Submit high school transcript. 4. All students must meet class prerequisites. Students will have to take placement or provide ACT scores. 5. Out-of-district residents: $ per contact hour 3. The final determining factor of in-district residence is a tax bill showing payment to MCC. (See Residency Policy online at fees* 1. Student Services fee $ per semester or session. 2. Payment Information Tuition and fees must be paid or a payment option secured before the payment deadline or classes will be dropped. After the payment deadline, tuition and fees are due at time of registration. Payments are also accepted online at (via WebAdvisor) using your Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express or check. For your convenience, you may also use the after-hours drop box, located on the main level of the Prahl College Center, for check or money order payments. Please do not place cash payments in the drop box. Check/Money Order: accepted at the main campus and branch site locations. Credit Card: accepted through WebAdvisor, main campus and branch site locations. Electronic Check: accepted only through WebAdvisor. Third Party Payment Sources This payment option allows an organization or employer to pay your tuition and fees. Student Financial Services must have an authorization for each semester s enrollment. All authorizations are applied in order of date received. Students are advised to check WebAdvisor to know when funding has been applied.

7 Payment Plan Pay one-third of your total tuition plus a $30 non-refundable enrollment fee. Payment Plan contracts must be set up in person at any Cashier s Office location no later than December 20, 2014 for the Winter Semester. Payments are due on January 1st, February 1st, and March 1st. Payments can be made online through WebAdvisor or in person at the main campus cashier s office or branch site locations. *If the January 1st payment is not made, the payment plan contract may be voided and some or all of your classes may be dropped. If the february 1st and/or the March 1st payment is missed, your account will be considered delinquent and may be referred to an outside collection agency. financial AID To be eligible for Federal Financial Aid you must: Be a U.S. Citizen with a valid social security number. Be enrolled as a regular student in an eligible program. Must have a high school diploma, G, or home schooling certification. Have registered for Selective Service between the ages of if you are male. Not be a guest student. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress. Fill out a FAFSA each academic year at MCC's School Code is Once you fill out FAFSA and enter Mott s school code, the information you provide will be analyzed by the federal government and sent electronically to MCC. The federal government reviews information and selects some files for verification. This means that you must verify the information you have provided the government. You must provide requested documentation to the Financial Aid Office or your aid cannot be processed. When your aid is processed an award letter will be posted to your WebAdvisor account. federal Aid Policies Satisfactory Academic Progress A student must: Successfully complete at least 67% of the total academic credits attempted. Successful completion does not include grades of I, W, U, N (audit), NS and any numerical grades of less than 1.0. Not exceed the maximum credit hour limit of 93 credits attempted towards an associate s degree. The 93 credit maximum applies to all coursework attempted, including transfer credits. Establish and Maintain a 2.0 g.p.a. Fresh Start is not recognized for Financial Aid Purposes TIP has 80 credits of eligibility for Phase I. SAP is calculated on the entire academic record, including transfer credits and semesters where aid was not used. Appeal Process If you violate SAP policy you will be notified of the name of the violation and your right to appeal. Your appeal will be reviewed by a committee. Deadlines for appeals can be found on the Financial Services SAP website page and the Important Dates page. Repeat Coursework A student may receive aid when repeating a course that was previously failed (received a U, 0.0 or NS), regardless of the number of times the course was attempted and failed. A student may receive aid to repeat a previously passed course one additional time. Once a student has completed any course twice with a passing grade, he/she is no longer eligible to receive aid for that course. If a student retakes a course that is not aid eligible, a recalculation of aid is done to exclude the credits for the repeated course. This rule applies whether or not the student received aid for earlier enrollments in the course. NOTE: Federal regulations specify that students may not receive aid for repeating courses previously passed twice, even if the student is required to retake those courses as part of a structured program. Census Date The Census date for Financial Aid eligibility is used to determine aid eligibility based on the credit hours enrolled in by the established date. Registration Restrictions/Prior Term Balances Before you register for classes, you must pay all outstanding debts and ensure that registration restrictions are removed. 3. Signatures/ Permissions and Advising Advisor approval is needed if you are registering for the first time OR have a cumulative GPA below 2.0. Go to the Academic Advisement Center, PCC2040 or any campus location. Counselor permission is required if you are undecided on a program major. Go to the Counseling Center, PCC2040 or any campus location. An Academic Dean's signature is required if you are registering for more than 18 credit hours in a semester or 9 in a spring or summer session. See page 2 for Academic Divisions. 4. Understanding Class Schedule Codes This information will help you understand the abbreviations used Page 8 Winter Semester 2014 in the MCC schedule. Please read it carefully before you complete your registration worksheet. Section Code The section code is the nine-digit letter and number code that identifies each section. It is important to print the section code accurately and clearly on the Class Schedule Worksheet. Express Code The Express code is the numeric representation of the section and can be used with the Express Registration option in WebAdvisor as the synonym. Course Number Developmental Education Course These classes allow you to improve your ability in certain skills. These credits do not count towards graduation requirements Undergraduate Courses These classes are for freshmen and sophomores in academic programs. Credits may be used to meet certificate or degree requirements. Course Title Class titles are abbreviated in the MCC Schedule. For a complete description, please see the college catalog or the website at Credit Hours and Contact Hours The number appearing in the "credit hour" (CR) column tells how many credits are given for the course. The number in the "contact hour" (CT) column indicates the number of hours per week the class meets. Your tuition is based on the number of "contact hours" the class meets. Financial Aid is based on credit hours, not contact hours. Days Days that classes meet are indicated by the first letter of the day, with exception of Thursday (R) and Sunday (U). If the days are marked "TBA," details will be available in the academic office sponsoring the class. Room The room column gives you the abbreviation of the building and room number where your class will meet. See the LOCATION S GUIDE on page 10 of this schedule for easy reference. If the room is marked "TBA" details will be available in the academic office sponsoring the class. Instructor This column lists the faculty member assigned to teach the class at the time our schedule is published. MCC reserves the right to change instructor assignments without advanced notice. Individual Class Add/Drop/withdraw Classes can be added/dropped in-person or online. A student may withdraw from a class and receive a W grade up to the 90% point of course completion. Now you can use your computer at home, on campus or at work to: Register for classes* Drop classes Print your class schedule Print a transcript Enrollment Verification Add classes* Look at your class schedule Look at your student history Check & pay your balance View your Financial Aid Award Letter View your Financial Aid Information by term *Note: You must see an advisor or counselor to register for classes if you are a new degree-seeking student or have a cumulative grade point average below 2.0. Also, if you have an outstanding balance, you must pay MCC in full before registering. 1. Log on to the MCC web site at: 2. Click on the WebAdvisor button 3. Log on (you must know your address, Student ID and Social Security number) 4. Registration Search for Classes Select the semester you are registering for. Select the subjects, courses, and click Submit. Register for Classes (If you know the express code, which is the 5-digit code listed in the right column in the Class Schedule Booklet, you may enter the code on the Express Registration screen as the synonym.) If the class is available, you will be registered when you press Submit. A Registration Results screen will indicate Registered, Added, or Failed. Drop Classes Click on the box in front of the course to be dropped on the Drop screen. Press Submit. The next screen will show Dropped" in the Status column. (You will not be able to drop classes on webadvisor after the full refund period. You will have to drop at the Registration Office.) 5. Select your Method of Payment Click on Make a Payment to pay by credit card or check. Other methods of payment must be secured before payment deadline or your classes will be dropped. 6. All the courses are for credit and follow the school calendar. Students access the courses through Blackboard. e-learning classes are listed below their on-campus counterparts (differentiated by their section codes WWW, WCA) and also under e-learning of this schedule. After registering for an e-learning course, students need to sign up for and attend a Start Up Session specific to their course. These may be on campus or in Blackboard. Please check the wording under the specific course in the schedule for your class. We highly recommend attendance as this is your opportunity to find out detailed information about your class. The schedule for the sessions may be viewed online at or displayed on our Inter-active Digital Display Board outside of CM The e-learning Office is located in the Curtice-Mott building room The phone number is DLES Preparedness Session The DLES session is a requirements for all e-learning offerings. This is a requirement for any student who has never taken a Mott WWW or WCA course. There are no exceptions. The sessions are entirely online and are available at and run for a week when offered. There will always be an open session however, please plan well in advance of the semester to allow yourself time to get into a class. Some sessions close faster than others and you may find that the next available class does not fit your schedule. Check the highlights on the e- Learning website or the Interactive Digital Display Board outside of CM 2124 for offering dates and times. The session usually takes about four hours to complete, depending on the skills of the student and the speed of the Internet connection. Grading is posted daily, so if students complete the session on the first day, they do not have to wait until the end of the session for their final grade to be entered. The final grade, either S satisfactory or U unsatisfactory will appear on (Mott only) transcripts, but will not be calculated in the GPA. Note: The first session of DLES is free. 11 Repeated Courses Credit for graduation cannot be earned more than once in the same course. If a student repeats a course, the last grade will be used to calculate the grade point average. All grades, however, will remain on the student's record. For students registering for the same course more than three times, the fourth registration requires Advisor approval (PCC2020). For students using financial aid, please see page 7. Address Changes File your ADDRESS CHANGE with the post office and the College. Each time you change your address, you must update this information in MCC's Registration Office. Report to the Records & Registration Office with a current picture I.D. showing your current address to make that change. Residency Status Change If your residency status changes when you update your address from out-of-district to in-district it is your responsibility to report this to the Records Office. You must provide proof of the residency change by providing a photo id with the change, current motor vehicle registration, property tax receipt for property tax within Mott Community College district, utility bill at in-district address, signed and dated rental or lease agreement showing address, dates of the lease, and signature/phone number of the landlord. 13 Important Information about MCC s General Education Requirements for All Degrees Based on research conducted by the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AACU), employers want college graduates to acquire versatile knowledge and skills. In education terms, these are general education courses. Faculty and staff of the College undertake review of these requirements on a periodic basis. The general education requirements have been revised to provide a more efficient path to graduation and to make the transition to a 4-year university smoother.
