CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE COUNSELING COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Cultural, Social, and Historical Overview of Alcohol and Drug Related Problems FPM (3 units) This course examines how history, culture and context frame the social and policy response that enables substance abuse treatment. This will be accomplished through an investigation of the historical, political, economic and cultural factors contributing to and defining substance abuse problems. The focus on these factors will be viewed as important, critical and supplemental contributors to the biological, medical, and disease model definitions of substance abuse. In particular, the course will examine the differential impact of substance abuse problems in various communities and demographic groups, e.g., African American, Asian, Latino, gender, age, LGBT, and socio-economic status. Chemical Dependency I: Disease, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Pharmacology, Recovery PSY (3 units) This basic course focuses on the disease of chemical dependency and the symptoms of the chemically dependent person. It covers the basic categories, purposes, and effects of the various drugs used in treating the disease. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the disease concept of chemical dependency; identify common symptoms of different types of chemical dependency; classify and identify major drugs; describe the development and use of psychoactive drugs throughout history; recognize signs of cross-tolerant, addictive, and synergistic effects of drugs; and identify practical signs of drug toxicity. Chemical Dependency II: Intervention, Treatment, Management, Patient Health Promotion, and Recovery PSY (3 units) In this course students learn to assess the physiological effects of alcohol and other drugs; tailor withdrawal plans to each patient's alcohol/drug-use history; recognize signs and symptoms of toxicity, withdrawal, and overdose; identify principles of detoxification and withdrawal from each major drug group (including multiple dependencies); and treat special populations (women, seniors, adolescents, and ethnic groups) and chemically dependent people and alcoholics. Through participation and role playing, students will learn the principles of intervention and group process. NOTE prerequisite: Chemical Dependency I. Introduction to Counseling Models PSY (3 units) This introductory course covers the theory and philosophy of counseling, the distinction between counseling and psychotherapy, personality types and development, learning theory, and trait theory. Students become involved in the counseling experience and investigate the variables of client, counselor, setting, methods, and expectations, as well as basic theories of client-centered counseling, behavioral counseling, and counseling based on the theory of individual differences. Students learn to handle real-life situations with the confidence to approach a problem and deal with it effectively. Law and Ethics for Addiction Professionals FPM (1 unit) This course familiarizes students with both legal and ethical responsibilities associated with the practice of substance abuse disorder treatment. Students learn about appropriate roles and behavior to avoid liability and prevent harm to clients. Issues such as confidentiality, duty to treat, responsibility to third parties, ethical decision-making, and legal remedies for discrimination experienced by people in or in need of recovery from alcoholism and/or drug addiction are explored. This course meets the legal and ethical responsibilities provisions of all alcohol and drug counselor certification authorities in California. 4
Applied Skills for Group Dynamics and Facilitation PSY (3 units) Counseling is a relationship in which the counselor helps the client mobilize resources to resolve problems or modify attitudes and values. Group counseling is an integral part of that process. This course is presented as a comparative study of counseling theories and practices as applied to groups, introducing major approaches, strategies, and applied skills in group counseling and examining the purpose and function of different types of counseling groups. To gain experience students will participate in several group counseling sessions in the classroom setting. Students gain awareness of their own personal philosophy of the group process and which approaches are most appropriate to particular situations. NOTE: Papers, assignments, and a final exam project are required. Case Management: Assessment, Orientation, and Treatment Planning PSY (3 units) With the focus on the chemically dependent person, this course covers initial intake, assessment of the problem, orientation of the patient to a specific program, treatment planning, reports and record keeping, recovery planning for the patient and family, and aftercare and follow-up. By the end of the course, students will understand and be able to demonstrate case management skills, from initial intake to continued recovery, as well as skills needed in any treatment setting, including inpatient or outpatient hospitalization, social model programs, and publicly funded treatment models. Prevention and Public Consequences of Substance Abuse FPM-4B054 (2 units) This course presents the individual as well as the societal consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs through an exploration of contemporary patterns of legal and illegal consumption and their health, social, family, economic, legal, and political consequences. Participants analyze the prevalence and complexity of such problems as impaired driving, traumatic injury, alcohol-related birth defects, domestic violence, homelessness, and workplace issues. Participants also have opportunities to debate the treatment an prevention implications suggested by readings and class discussions, and prepare themselves to explore strategies for mitigation. Basic and Advanced Counseling Skills and Characteristics PSY (1 unit) Use of effective counseling skills enables counselors to communicate with clients effectively, deal with client resistance, and develop enhanced therapeutic relationships. The focus of this two-day workshop is on building productive and results-oriented counseling skills. Participants gain an understanding of the terms associated with basic and advanced counseling characteristics and the components of each, the phases of a counseling session, the limits of confidentiality, and the types of feedback and application of each. In addition, participants have the opportunity to practice counseling at both levels. Crisis Intervention: Theory and Practical Skills FPM (2 units) This course presents a crisis intervention model along with appropriate clinical presentations of people in crisis. Topics include: defining crisis, ethical considerations and examining oneself in the process of crisis counseling. Students will learn crisis skills (summarizing, pacing, and interviewing); mental health triage (assessment, management); community resource information; referrals; and networking. Participants are evaluated on the acquisition of skills through role-playing and feedback and a paper. Dual Diagnosis: The Synergism of Chemical Dependency and Psychiatric Illness PSY-4022 (2 units) This course presents the critical factors that need to be addressed in the diagnosis and treatment of those who suffer from substance abuse disorders and psychiatric/emotional disorders. It introduces the major psychiatric disorders and how they mirror/interact with substance abuse disorders. Participants learn about prevalence, symptoms, assessment, treatment planning, and interventions. The course provides a basic differential diagnosis 5
framework for counselors working with a chemically dependent population. Participants will have the opportunity through case histories and role plays to practice assessments and treatment interventions. NOTE: Recommended that students take Chemical Dependency I before taking this class or have some knowledge of chemical dependency. Advanced Intervention PSY-4B213 (2 units) Professionals and volunteers who work in settings where drug-affected human behavior can be monitored for corrective healthcare should understand the advanced methods for intervention. This course builds upon the basic understanding of chemical dependency intervention through learning applied methods. Methods can then be put into practice by a professionally orchestrated intervention in order to assist the addict/alcoholic to accept treatment. Topics covered include the history, functions, and approaches of intervention; the family as a system; enabling behavior of all persons involved with the addict/alcoholic; and various modalities of treatment. NOTE prerequisites: Chemical Dependency I and II. Practicum for the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor FPM (5 units) This practicum consists of field-based, practical experience for the counseling student who has successfully completed required coursework for the Professional Certificate for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling. Participants work with a chemical dependency or helping agency, public or private, while under the direct supervision of the practicum coordinator or an approved supervisor. Students will be allowed to choose the site themselves; however, the agency, situation, and conditions of the practicum must be approved by the practicum coordinator, who will also assist with placement. Students work in appropriate chemical dependency treatment settings to gain experience and supervision in the core areas of intake, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, and consultation. The program consists of 45 educational hours and a minimum of 255 hours at the approved agency. 6
Frequently Asked Questions What does this program prepare me to do? The certificate coursework and practicum prepare you to take the ICRC written exam, administered twice a year through CCAPP. Those who successfully pass the exam and the portfolio review become certified at the Registered Alcohol Drug Technician II level. CCAPP certification is becoming increasingly essential for those seeking employment in the substance abuse counseling field. When I finish the program and receive my certificate, am I certified? No, the certificate documents your completion of the required coursework and practicum. It is something you can list on your resume. You are, however, not certified until you successfully pass the portfolio review and CCAPP ICRC exam. Where can I find out more about CCAPP certification? You will find detailed information about certification on the CCAPP website: where you can download the CCAPP Certification Application. When does the program start? Extension runs on the quarter rather than the semester system, so courses are offered in the fall, winter, spring, and summer quarters. You may begin taking courses in any quarter. The introductory courses are held in the fall quarter, and it s a good place to start, especially for individuals with no experience in the field, but if it doesn t work out to do that, it s not essential, and you will not be at a disadvantage if you don t start in the fall. Are there any requirements that I need to meet before I can enroll in courses? CCAPP doesn t currently have an academic degree requirement related to RADT-II certification, which Extension s certificate program prepares individuals for. Therefore, Extension doesn t have academic prerequisites related to the certificate, with the exception of a high school diploma or equivalent. In addition, students should have at least one year of sobriety before starting the program. Less than that will make it very difficult to secure a practicum site. There are three courses within the program that we recommend/require students not take before completing other courses in the program. It is recommended that students take Chemical Dependency I and II before taking Dual Diagnosis, and they are required before enrolling in Advanced Intervention. It is also recommended that students wait to take most, if not all, of the rest of the courses before taking Law and Ethics for Addiction Professionals. Do I need to fill out a formal application before I can take courses? No, you may begin taking courses at any time by simply enrolling in the course(s) of your choice. There is no formal application form. There is a $60 certificate program enrollment fee that may be paid at any time while you are taking courses and must be paid to receive your certificate when you complete the program. Because the fee is nonrefundable we recommend that you take a few courses before enrolling in the program to make sure that it will meet your needs. What is the cost of the program? The total cost is approximately $4,700, including the $60 certificate application fee, the course fees, and an estimated $500 for course texts. Parking fees are additional and run $43 for a nighttime quarterly permit or $1.00 per 45 min. up to a maximum of $9 per day. (Course and other costs subject to change) Do I have to pay for the entire program up front? No, you pay for each course when you enroll in the course. You cannot enroll without paying the fee. Is financial aid available? Financial aid in the form of low cost student loans is available. For information, please visit our website ( and look for the Financial Assistance page under Student Resources. How are the courses formatted? Class meetings are held on weeknights except Fridays and Saturdays, with rare exceptions. No class meetings are held during the day on weekdays. Almost all weeknight class meetings run 6:00-9:00 p.m.; the three summer quarter courses are held on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to mid afternoon. 7
Is there an order in which I must take the courses? The courses are offered in sequence starting in the fall quarter with quarter-long, knowledge-base or foundation courses and concluding in the summer quarter with short courses on special topics. You don t, however, have to start in the fall quarter you may start at any time in any quarter by enrolling in whatever course or courses are still upcoming that quarter. Once I start taking courses, do I have to take courses every quarter? No, if you need to stop taking courses for a period of time, you may simply start taking them again whenever you are ready. How long does it take to complete the program? It will take a minimum of one year (four quarters) to complete the coursework and probably an additional quarter or more to complete practicum hours. You may take as long as you need (up to five years) to complete the program. Courses are offered once a year, so whatever courses you don t take in a given quarter, you can take the following year in the same quarter. Can I apply courses in this certificate program to the degree I m working on? UCSD Extension courses and workshops do offer academic units, but they are continuing education units, which are neither undergraduate nor graduate level units. If an Extension student is interested in applying Extension coursework to an academic degree they may be working on, the institution offering the degree would make the decision whether or not to accept the units. It would be up to the student to inquire and supply whatever documentation the institution may require. I ve completed some courses that I would like to get credit for in this program. Is that possible? Extension can accept no more than two courses you have taken elsewhere, as long as they are comparable to courses in the program. You need to submit a transcript and a course description and preferably a syllabus for the courses you would like to substitute. The program advisor will review the material and make the decision. I m not interested in earning the certificate, but I d like to take some of the courses. Is it possible to do that? Yes, the courses are available for enrollment and provide CE credit on an individual basis. How do I enroll in courses? To enroll Online: Go to our website, On this page you will see a list of the program s courses. Click on the title of the course you are interested in, which will take you to the course page showing the description and other details. If the course is being offered in the immediate future, you will see the date, section, and fee (click show details ) under that description. When ready, click on the Add to Cart button next to the appropriate section. By phone: Find the course or courses on the Extension website: This will provide you with the course title and the six digit section ID number. Call the Student Services office at (858) or (858) Provide the section number and your Visa, Mastercard, or Discover card number. In person: You may enroll at any of the three UCSD Extension sites: on campus at the Extension Complex, 9600 N. Torrey Pines Rd., La Jolla 92093, ; University City Center, 6256 Greenwich Dr., San Diego, or Mission Valley, 404 Camino Del Rio S., Ste. 102, San Diego, CA 92108, Do I need to enroll for a letter grade or can I enroll for a pass? Students in this certificate program are required to enroll for a letter grade. How do I enroll in the certificate program? Enrolling in the certificate program involves the same procedure as enrolling in a course. Visit and scroll down the page until you see the To Apply for the Certificate Program section. There will be an Apply Now! Button under it: click on that. To note, there is no fee for applying, but there is a $60 certificate fee. 8
Where on the Extension website do I look for information on courses (including dates) that are being offered currently? On the homepage under Areas of Study, click on Healthcare, Behavioral Sciences, and Safety. On the next screen, under Courses, click on Behavioral Sciences. You will see a list of all the courses currently available for enrollment. Click on individual titles to view the description, instructor bio, and dates. Click on click to show details link for time, location, etc. Scroll down to access the Enroll Now button. Are there any textbooks required? Yes, look for information online, under the course description page, after you click on the click to show details link. Required textbooks are stocked at the UCSD Bookstore, but they can also be ordered online from any source. How much work outside of class is there? Each course is different, but students should expect to complete readings and assignments between class meetings. Students can attend the first class meeting of the fall, winter, and spring courses and drop any they determine they aren t going to be able to handle before the second class meeting. I haven t been in school for a while, and I m concerned about the work load. Are there any suggestions for addressing that? If you are concerned about the amount of work required for a course, you may attend the first class meeting (except for the summer quarter courses) without enrolling, and if, after reviewing the syllabus and/or speaking with the instructor, you determine the workload is too heavy for you to manage in the near term, you simply don t enroll in that course that quarter. You may find that your schedule doesn t allow you to take three courses in a given quarter, in which case take one or two whatever you can handle. Where are the courses held? The courses are held at the UCSD Extension Complex, 9600 N. Torrey Pines Rd., La Jolla on the far west edge of the UCSD campus. A parking permit is required on weeknights. Maps and driving directions are available on the Extension website: extension.ucsd.edu. Click on Maps at the top of the homepage. When can I start accruing practicum hours and how many are required? You may begin the practicum in any quarter after completing all of the courses or minimally the following: Chemical Dependency I and II, Applied Skills for Group Dynamics and Facilitation, Case Management, and Law and Ethics for Addiction Professionals. Regardless of whatever other courses you ve taken, if you haven t taken any one or more of these, you will not be able to start without an exception being made. Contact4 the program representative, (below) when you are ready to start. You are responsible for obtaining a practicum site; however, the practicum coordinator can provide suggestions. In addition to the guidance provided by the practicum coordinator, you will also work under a site supervisor. To complete the practicum, you are required to accrue 255 hours. In addition, you are required to accrue 45 instructional hours. While you are doing your site work, you will attend meetings and trainings sponsored by various agencies and organizations. How long does it take to complete the practicum? The amount of time it will take to complete the 255 hours will depend on your practicum site, how much time you are available to work, and how many hours the site can use you. The amount of time will vary from student to student. When I ve completed all the coursework and the practicum, what do I need to do to receive my certificate? Notify Extension by calling Certificate Processing at (858) , by mailing a completed Intent to Complete Certificate Program form, or by submitting the Online Intent to Complete Certificate Program form. Certificates are issued after the application fee has been paid and final grades have been posted. Is job placement available? No, job placement assistance is not provided. You will have the benefit of having secured your practicum site, which is not unlike the process of securing an actual job, and you will have accrued considerable on-the-job 9
experience through the practicum, which will be an asset in seeking a job. You will also have the benefit of insights you will gain from instructors and fellow students about job opportunities. Questions? Call (858) or unexhealthcare@ucsd.edu. 10
