1 ACADEMIC ALERT # DATE: May 2005 DECISION: College of Management and Business (CMB) Revisions to the Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration: 3+1 Model 2+2 Option Remains in Order to Accommodate Future Community College Partnerships B.A. Business Administration -year program on Hold in U.S (not recruiting); Offered at WSB-NLU, Nowy Sacz, Poland; Specialized Option in International Business (Option and Courses on Hold; Offered at WSB-NLU Nowy Sacz, Poland); Specialized Option in Marketing (Option and Courses on Hold; Offered at WSB-NLU Nowy Sacz, Poland); Specialized Option in Accounting (Option and Courses on Hold; Offered at WSB-NLU Nowy Sacz, Poland) Elimination of BECA Certificate Program (all of courses on hold except MGT200) Elimination of Business Minor (courses remain) The revised B.A. in Business Administration program is a for students in the United States. A version will remain for the transition from a -year program to the model, and for future partnerships with Community Colleges that may need such a model. The B.A. in Business Administration as a -year program and its specialized options is placed on hold (students not recruited ) in the United States. The -year program continues at WSB-NLU Nowy Sacz, Poland Eliminated is the one-year certificate in Business Education for Career Advancement (BECA). No students should be admitted to this certificate program. There is a two-year phase-out process of the BECA certificate program. The Business Minor is eliminated as well. Rationale The University is concentrating on marketing its Bachelors programs to transfer students, senior level students, and working on developing 3+1 agreements and partnerships with community colleges. In an effort to reconceptualize the traditional, on-campus undergraduate Business program so that it best meets the current needs and goals of NLU, CMB faculty proposed changes in curriculum and course delivery of the college s BA in Business Administration. Senate Academic Planning Committee Approval: April 21, 2005 Faculty Senate Approval: May 18, 2005 Program Authorizations: The B.A. in Business Administration Program is authorized to be offered in the following Illinois Regions: Chicago; North Suburban; Western; and South Metropolitan. The B.A. BA is also authorized to be offered in McLean, Virginia; and at WSB-NLU Nowy Sacz, Poland. IMPLEMENTATION DATE: Fall, 2005 for 3 +1 in U.S. only; On hold (no recruiting of students) for -year program effective immediately in the U.S. only. CONTACT: Barbara Scheidt, College of Management and Business; ext SIGNATURE Carol R. Melnick, Ph.D. Vice Provost
2 Admissions The senior level cohort will be designed for students who have completed an Associate (A.A. or A.A.S.) degree in Management or who have earned equivalent credits at two-year institutions while seeking to complete their undergraduate degrees. Admission requirements are the same as those currently listed in the UG catalog for admission to National-Louis University. All admitted students will work closely with a CMB faculty advisor who will track hours and review coursework to determine eligibility for the cohort program. Admitted students who are not yet qualified to join a senior level cohort will continue to pursue additional credit hours. Students may take approved classes at their two-year institutions until sufficient credit hours have accrued to enter National-Louis twelve courses, 9-credit hour, degree completion program. Students will also be encouraged to pursue studies and credit hours at National-Louis. National- Louis opportunities for students include traditional undergraduate courses, FOCUS courses, CLEP & DANTES exams or proficiency and portfolio credit. Curriculum Nine of the twelve of the courses are currently offered at NLU and will undergo minor revisions to make them appropriate senior level courses. Three new courses need to be developed. All courses will have 00-level course number designations to indicate the upper-division content. The only BECA course that can be eliminated is MGT 200 Practicum These eliminated courses are: MGT 101, 106, 120, 121, 12, 150, 20, 207, 215, 23, 302 Eliminate the BUSINESS MINOR but not the courses. MGT 101 MGT 120 MGT 121 MGT 23 MGT 300 MGT 302 MGT 350 Implementation The changes are complicated and numerous. Therefore changes in Banner and the next catalog need to be made carefully and the academic alert consulted with regard to any implementation issues. There needs to be clear understanding of the following: The revised B.A. in Business Administration program is a program for students in the United States. A version will exist as for a year as a transition from a -year program to the model. The B.A. in Business Administration as a -year program and its specialized options is placed on hold (students not recruited or admitted) in the United States. The -year B.A. in Business Administration Program continues at WSB-NLU Nowy Sacz, Poland. Eliminated is the one-year certificate in Business Education for Career Advancement (BECA). No students should be admitted to this certificate program. There will be a two-year phase-out process of the BECA certificate. The Business Minor is eliminated, and no students should be recruited or admitted. The B.A. in Business Administration should follow undergraduate admission policies for student admittance to the University. The requirement for 135-quarter hours can only be effective for program eligibility and not admission to the university. Barbara Scheidt needs to work closely with the Offices of the Provost, Admission, Registrar, and Enrollment Management so that the above decisions are implemented correctly. 5
6 The changes are to be made in the catalog. It is too late to include these changes in the catalog. The catalog needs to clarify that the -year B.A. Business Administration is for WSB-NLU only. The revised program and courses need to be in the catalog, but need to be entered in Banner immediately. 6
