1 TUTORIAL PROPOSAL FOR ACM SAC 2015 Overview of the proposed tutorial: Title of Tutorial: Middleware and Healthcare Apps for Internet-of-Things (IoT) Presenters: José Cecílio Karen Duarte Pedro Furtado Duration of Proposed Tutorial: Half-Day (~3 hours) Targeted Audience: Students, Researchers, and Faculty Abstract of the tutorial We live in an exciting time for lovers of lego-like sensing devices and remote operation. The availability of off-the-shelf sensors and wireless sensor nodes have increased dramatically over the last years, while their price has decreased also dramatically. Today anyone with a reasonable expertise in programming and a love for sensor technology can buy, for example, a Raspberry and some sensors, go to the internet to learn how to build and configure them, and put them to work in some simple application. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are networks of such nodes, and WSN middleware allows programming and operating such networks. The vision of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a related but more global concept. It is one of the recent technological and social trends that will have a significant impact in the delivery of healthcare. The internet extends to the real world, everything becoming interconnected and having a digital entity [3], [4], [5]. Everyday objects will have the capability of directly interacting with each other and with humans [4], [6]. In this tutorial we first review middleware for WSN and architectures of IoT. Then we present the design of an interoperable and heterogeneity-handling middleware for both WSN and for IoT.
2 Once we have presented the middleware solutions for WSN and IoT, we will describe how these concepts are applied in two applications related to healthcare. Healthcare is nowadays one important topic in all governments and political agendas [1]. This can be explained by the increasing ageing of the population, higher number of people living with long-term conditions and the growing demand for more advanced healthcare and new medical technologies [2]. In healthcare systems, IoT enables the patient to stay longer and safer at home, since smart devices can alarm the hospital in case of critical conditions. Furthermore, due to constant monitoring, the patient can be relieved from the hassle of routine checks, replacing costly travel and reducing patient stress [8]. Using implantable wireless devices to store health records could save a patient's life in emergency situations [4], [8]. Several other studies have demonstrated that IoT is an enabler with the potential to greatly affect and improve the quality of healthcare [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14]. The work in [12] proposes an obstacle detection system based on ultrasonic sensors that can be added to a cane that helps blind people to find their way in an unfamiliar area. A multiple sensor-based shoe-mounted sensor interface is also studied in [3] as a supplementary device to the cane, while the authors of [14] propose a system based on RFID and GPS that helps visually impaired in their navigation/motion activities. Concerning paralyzed patients in an hospital, IoT can be used to alert nurses and caregivers for example, to replace the diapers as soon as they become wet [15]. We will pick two specific projects to apply the concepts of IoT middleware, one related to indoor navigation of blind people to find products and services, the other related to applying Brain- Computer-Interfaces to help people with disabilities. We will describe the architecture and middleware developed, and how they work. Motivation, Target audience, and Interest to the SAC community Connecting everything to the Internet (shifting from anytime, anyplace connectivity for anyone to connectivity for anything), has the potential to generate benefits for users, health systems and society at large. Given this premise, the objective of this tutorial is to discuss the state-of-the-art concerning middleware approaches, how can they improve the usability of things, healthcare systems and what are the open issues for IoT. This tutorial is intended for IoT middleware developers and testers, IoT researchers, and graduate students. As the tutorial addresses one important area of research related with IoT, it addresses a high spectrum of potential attendees of ACM SAC The tutorial will also benefit related stakeholders to understand the existing middleware solutions for IoT, designed/oriented to help people with disabilities. Outline The tutorial will consist of the following three sections: Section 1: Wireless sensor network; Concepts and Components, Middleware and Programming Approaches This section is about middleware architectures for configuring and operating heterogeneous sensor networks. We will review existing middleware proposals, discuss advantages and disadvantages of
3 each. Lastly, we will discuss a middleware approach and demonstrate the approach on a practical prototype applied in an automation case. Section 2: Internet-of-Things; Concepts, Applications and Middleware Approaches In this session we will show the usability of IoT architectures (IoT application scenarios), review and discuss current middleware architectures and open issues for IoT. Since smart connectivity with existing networks and context-aware computation using network resources is an indispensable part of IoT, we will also discuss service-oriented IoT middleware approaches, as well as interoperability issues (how to make IoT ubiquitous architectures interoperable). Lastly, we will present a middleware approach to achieve easy programming and deployment of IoT applications (languages and tools). Section 3: Discussion of Application Scenarios and Demo In order to improve the quality-of-life of blind people, we have built an IoT architecture supported by a smartphone and some Bluetooth emitters to guide blind people inside public buildings, mainly shopping centres SmartGuia. We have also developed an architecture and middleware for a Brain- Computer-Interface to teach people with cognitive and motor limitations BCIoT. In this discussion and demo we will show how SmartGuia was designed and is used for indoor assisted shopping and navigation by blind people, and we will also show how BCIoT was designed. The SmartGuia system helps the user navigate and find desired or available services and products in buildings. It aims to increase the autonomy of blind people in day-to-day indoor activities. Since blind persons do not have access to the common visual information, this system consists of a smartphone application which offers guided navigation, answering questions, and providing objective information about places, products and services that are available. BCIoT is an IoT architecture designed to process brain signals to be used together with serious games to teach or improve autonomy of physically handicapped people. Two simple scenarios based on grasp and eye-gaze imagination games will be used to show the ability of the architecture. Games consist on choosing the right object to put on the recycling bin or to choose a piece of a puzzle to fit the other one in a white board. Specific goals and objectives This tutorial has three main objectives. The first is to present modern concepts of WSN middleware to attendees. The second objective is to make the bridge between the WSN middleware and both the architecture and design of IoT middleware. The third objective is to show how these concepts map to some practical applications. In this tutorial, we expect the audience to take away the following messages: What are the important issues and what is the state-of-art architecture and middleware for WSN and IoT; How to design a middleware for easy configuration and operation of WSN and IoT applications; What are the challenges for developing IoT applications for people with disabilities; Examples of forward-looking applications of IoT;
