1 SMoCA Ai Weiwei Alcatraz San Francisco Saturday, October 18 Sunday, October 19, 2014 Join the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art s Associate Director, Curator, and Educator Sara Cochran, Ph.D., on an insider s trip to San Francisco that includes special access to the highly anticipated installation on Alcatraz Island by Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei. Our group will be among the first to view the exhibition, as it opens only three weeks prior to our trip. We will witness Ai s site-specific sculpture, sound, and multimedia works for spaces throughout the island, including restricted areas that will be opened to the public especially for this exhibition.the exhibition raises urgent questions about individual and creative freedom. Ai is one of the most important and controversial artists alive today. His criticism of the Chinese Government landed him in jail for 81 days in 2011 and means he cannot legally leave China. This poignant personal history makes his work on Alcatraz all the more resonate. Organized by the FOR-SITE Foundation in partnership with the National Parks Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, his exhibition is a meditation on the layered history of Alcatraz a notorious federal penitentiary, a site of Native American heritage and protest, and now a national park.

2 Tour the AI Weiwei show with Cheryl Haines of Haines Gallery, who established the FOR-SITE Foundation and travelled regularly to Beijing to work directly with Ai Weiwei on the organization this exciting exhibition. Enjoy Chara Schreyer s renowned private collection of modern and contemporary art. Don t take our word for it. For years, she has featured in ARTnews list of the Top Ten Collectors in the world. Schreyer has been passionately collecting work by major artists such as Sol Lewitt, Jeff Wall, Richard Serra, Andy Warhol, and Fred Sandback since she studied art history at UC Berkeley. We have been granted special entree to her wonderful house in Tiburon in the company of her assistant Rhonda Anderson. Discover Andy Goldsworthy s three separate and thoughtful interventions spread out across the Presidio: the 2006 Spire, the 2011 Wood Line and 2013 Tree Fall. Goldsworthy spent his childhood in Yorkshire (UK). His has made work in the open air in places as diverse as the Yorkshire Dales, the North Pole, and the Australian Outback. He draws his inspiration from these different places and creates art from the materials found close at hand, such as twigs, leaves, stones, snow, and ice, striving to make connections between what we call nature and what we call man-made. Visit the studio of artist Jim Campbell, whose work combines film, sound, and LED light installations. Campbell manipulates computers and custom electronics to create visually arresting artworks. Meet artist David Maisel who will welcome us to his studio in scenic Sausalito. His large-scale photography shown at SMoCA in the 2013 exhibition David Maisel/Black Maps: American Landscape and the Apocalyptic Sublime -- documents the impact of both human consumption and habitation on the landscape of the American West. Trip meals will include a late dinner at the top-rated Kokkari Estiatorio restaurant and dim sum at local favorite Yank Sing. Please be aware that this is an active tour and that SMoCA travel opportunities are crafted especially for our Friends of SMoCA members. Due to the short nature of this extraordinary trip, we are waiving the standard donation to SMoCA. However, all travelers must be a Friend of SMoCA. For more information please friendsofsmoca@sccarts.org. The price of this bespoke trip is: $1, Per Person (Airfare is not included) $ Single Supplement Pricing is based on 24 paying patrons.
