Studying at INSA Lyon insa lyon : an international institute INSA Lyon INSA-Lyon was founded in 1957 and is part of the nation-wide group of 5 Institutes (Lyon, Rennes, Rouen, Strasbourg and Toulouse) from which about 10% of all French engineers graduate each year. INSA-Lyon is a technological institution of European dimension and a dynamic centre of scientific research. It produces highly qualified engineers who are well equipped to meet the needs of industry. INSA-Lyon is located on the Lyon Tech campus de la Doua, 15 minutes from the centre of Lyon which is the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region. The success of INSA-Lyon is linked to the teaching and training programmes set up to favor the students personal development throughout their engineering studies. The degree course lasts 5 years and students are admitted upon successfully completing high school. It offers oncampus accommodation and a wide choice of clubs and associations; there are also excellent sporting opportunities. Special groups exist for students who want to combine their engineering studies with national or international sporting careers or with the arts (music, dance, theatre, or art). Students receive tuition in foreign languages and communication skills. 6 A major international reputation Ever since it opened INSA has insisted on the importance of preparing its engineers for international careers. Each year, 75% of graduates carry out a part of their studies abroad, either in one of the 200 associated universities located in 50 different countries or in companies abroad. Ten foreign languages are taught to prepare students for their stay abroad. Fluency in English and in another foreign language is required to students in order to obtain their qualification. International activities include scientific co-operation between researchers and teachers, and the organization of international scientific seminars and symposia.

A large international population INSA Lyon is a multicultural campus with a melting pot of 75 nationalities, where 30% of the students are non-french. During their studies, French students live side by side with degree-seeking students enrolled in the INSA engineering degree programme or PhD programme, as well as with exchange students from abroad who attend INSA for either 6 months or 1 year. International sections EURINSA, ASINSA and AMERINSA are three sections in the «first cycle» (a 2-year core programme). Eurinsa admits students from France and from other European countries, Asinsa from France and Asia and Amerinsa admits students from France and Latin America, providing them with a specially adapted syllabus and learning approach. SCAN is a special section in the first cycle where teaching is carried out in English for English speaking foreign students. insa-lyon.fr A department of french as a foreign language (fle) It provides the opportunity for international students to improve their standard of French. It offers: - intensive summer and winter schools: ECTS credits: 3 four-week courses (90 hours), in small groups of 12 to 15 people, combining teaching and visits (see calendar p 12). The 90 hours are free of charge for the exchange students coming to study at INSA for whole year. On the contrary, the exchange students coming for one semester shall pay 410. No reimbursement will be possible once the programme has started. Should the academic stay be extended for one semester, reimbursement will be possible with a deduction of 10 % corresponding to administratives expenses. The summer session starts: - on the first week of August for the foreign students in the international sections Amerinsa, Asinsa, Eurinsa and Scan 1st - mid-august for exchange students. The winter session is offered only to exchange students coming to start their studies at the beginning of the second term. It starts mid-january. - extensive courses to provide students with learning support throughout the academic year (ECTS credits: 2 each semester) 2 to 6 hours per week (on Thursday) depending on the level and the specialization of the students. servfran@insa-lyon.fr General French courses or French for special purposes are available upon request for homogeneous group levels. Filipe A new service which provides free online linguistic and intercultural preparation for science and technology. 7

Admission at the Bachelor s or Master s level Foreign students can apply for admission as regular students (degreeseeking students) or as students under exchange agreements. There are two different registration processes depending on whether the student is applying for the degree course or whether he wants to validate credits obtained during an exchange programme. Regular student status requires the student to meet the admission qualifications and the French language requirement. dred@insa-lyon.fr PhD programme The PhD programme in France is a full time, three-year programme undertaken with the guidance of an academic supervisor. A student must first have a Research-Oriented Master s Degree from an institution of higher education in France or an equivalent degree from abroad. For more details about the programmes consult our site under: More info about research > Research Research Research is carried out in 21 specialised laboratories with the help of more than 550 research lecturers and 800 research students. The research covers the main fields of science and engineering. INSA uses the latest technology and is actively involved in joint projects with national research institutions, such as the CNRS, INRA, INSERM, and with international laboratories as well as with companies such as EDF-GDF, France Telecom, Alcatel... An institute committed to development schemes INSA-Lyon is also a resource centre distributing French expertise in the field of engineering studies, education and research to partners in the developing countries. 70% of INSA laboratories are involved in this type of cooperation. 8

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was developed by the European Commission to establish a way of presenting teaching programmes which would be used by all the institutions and so facilitate the accreditation of courses followed abroad. The ECTS system is designed to make it easier for institutions to measure and compare the learning achievements of students, through the use of commonly understood measurements - ECTS credits and grades- and to transfer them from one institution to another. ECTS is based on four fundamental elements The information Package insa-lyon.fr/ It supplies information to students and staff on the institutions/departments /faculties, the organisation and structure of the studies and modular units. The course contents and their ECTS credits can be found on the following web site: INSA web site ( > Education >Course description The Learning Agreement It covers the programme of study to be undertaken and the ECTS credits to be awarded for successful completion of the courses. This is a guarantee that the stay abroad is indeed an integral part of the student s higher education; the home institution is committed to giving full academic recognition to the credits gained abroad and the host institution to providing the agreed course units subject to timetabling. Industrial Internship After a minimum of successful studies in one department (see the information sheet in the application form), you can be registered for an industrial internship. These studies had to be completed with a minimum of 15 to 20 ECTS credits out of which 15 must be mandatorily validated each semester (according to the department). 10

The record transcript This record shows a student s learning achievement in a way which is easily understood and transferable from one institution to another. 16 Insurance Social cover / health / hospitalization students from the european union or the european economic area 1. You are in possession of the EFHI (European Form of Health Insurance). You are covered by this form and therefore exempted from the registration to the French Student Social Security. 2. You are in possession of a personal Private Insurance or a Conventional Health Insurance Covering (the certificate validity must be equal to the academic year and the certificate translated in French). You are covered by this insurance and also exempted from the registration to the French Student Social Security. Students not issued from european union (eu) or european economic area (eea) These students must necessarily be registered to the French Student Social Security for the whole academic year 2013/2014 (from October 1 st 2013 to September 30 th 2014) even if they are already covered by a conventional Health Insurance or a personal Private Insurance. The cost is always annual (regardless of the exchange duration) - cost: 207 for Exception : Students from QUEBEC The presentation of the SE 401 Q 106, form, if valid for the academic year, exempts the student from the registration to the French Student Social Security. Students coming for an academic exchange programme shorter than 3 months : as they are not obliged to register to the French Social Security, they can not be undertaken for medical expenses by the Student Social Security System. Therefore, they must take a health insurance covering in their home country, valid also in France. Civil liability policy covering the risk of accidents Every student is required to take out necessarily an individual civil liability/insurance in France with a French student mutual insurance company. This costs 16 in , with the SMERRA (Mutuelle des Etudiants de la Région Rhone-Alpes) or the LMDE (La Mutuelle des Etudiants). 16

Complementary insurance (optional) We remind you that the French Student Social Security only covers 70 to 80% of medical expenses. This is why you have the possibility of taking out complementary insurance cover with a student mutual insurance company (SMERRA or LMDE) on arrival at INSA (cost: 100 to 350 in 2012/2013). This complementary insurance includes «civil liability». Visiting students The students coming from Universities without agreement with INSA- Lyon or those who want to extend their exchange for a second school year, are registered as visiting students. In addition to the different fees, the student has to pay tuition fees which amounts to 760. 25 Pratical guide Currency and banks As in most of European Area countries, the currency in France is the Euro ( ) divided into cents of Euros. There are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cent coins, 1 and 2 coins. The bank notes are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500. Be careful: a lot of shops do not accept 200 and 500 euro notes. You can open a bank account in a post office or any bank (branches to be found in all districts of Lyon). In most cases, it is very easy to open a nonresident s account: your passport and proof of a fixed address in France are all you need. We recommend you to have Visa credit card for your shopping in France. Shopping In the centre of Villeurbanne, in the Gratte-Ciel district, there are many small shops, open mostly from Mon. to Sat. from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday is closing day for most shops. The large supermarkets (Carrefour, Auchan, Leclerc...) are generally open from Mon. to Sat. from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The shopping centre La Part-Dieu is open from 9.30 a.m. to 8 p.m (closed on Sundays). There are also fruit and vegetable open-air markets during the week (Croix Luizet, Place Wilson, Gratte-Ciel). The telephone and mail service Public telephone boxes operate mainly with phone cards that you can buy in post offices or tobacconist s shops. In France, the telephone number consists of 10 digits. It begins with a zero followed by a code number per region (01 for the Paris region, 04 for the Lyon region...) To phone the overseas territories or abroad, you dial 00 then the country code, then the town code and then the local number. You will find the various code numbers in all the phone directories. If you want to send letters, stamps are on sale in post offices and in tobacconist s shops. Post offices are open Mon. to Fri. from 8.45 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. and on Sat a.m. to 12 a.m. Mobile phone You might be able to use your own mobile phone in France, it depends on your subscription in your country but it might cost you a lot of money. You can get a mobile phone in France. Contact the 3 mobile operators to see the different rates:

Mail A letter sent to France from abroad must have the following items : the name of the institution, the name of the person, the building, the room number, the street number and the street name, the town post code and the name of the country. (ex : INSA DE LYON Direction des Relations Internationales Bât. Marco Polo - 47, boulevard du 11 novembre Villeurbanne cedex France) Web access If you chose to live on-campus in one of our students residence, you will have internet access from your flat/room shortly after arrival (minimum stay 1 month). You need your own computer and connection devices (cables ). Some buildings at INSA are also wifi connected. Further information is available in the student guide on your arrival or on the following site : Electricity in France France uses electricity at 220 volts. If you come from a country where appliances are designed for 110 volts, you will need a voltage converter or a transformer depending on the type of appliances or equipment you plan to use in France. As the wall outlets configurations (2-pin plugs) can be different in France from your country, you may also have to buy plug adaptors (be careful: plug adapters don t change the voltage). Leisure in Lyon If you choose to come to INSA-Lyon you will have the opportunity to learn about the cultural heritage of France at one of its most beautiful cities. Lyon and its historical background Two thousand years of history have left a rich heritage. Between the Rhône and the Saône rivers, from one hill to another, Lyon will reach out to you through its two thousand years of existence and all its riches. These date back to the Gallo-Roman period, Medieval times, and the Renaissance. But Lyon is also rich in contemporary culture and in its industrial environment. Silk weaving is one of the industries that established Lyon s reputation. You will discover famous names from Lyon: Ampère, Pasteur, the Lumière brothers... on the Lyon wall fresco, rue de la Martinière. 26

If you like strolling through the city, you should visit the old town (le Vieux Lyon) and the district of St Jean. This district bears witness to the history of the Middle Ages with its Saint Jean cathedral built between the XIIth and XVth centuries. It is a perfect illustration of architectural transformations from the Roman to the Gothic periods. Within this exceptional collection of Renaissance architectural features, you will walk along old streets with interior courtyards and the famous traboules, narrow covered alleys and passages which connect one street to another. In 1998, the historic site of Lyon was classified on the World Heritage List by UNESCO. If you walk up a little higher, you will find your way to la colline de Fourvière which provides magnificent panoramic views over the city. If you cross over the Saône river, you make your way to the Presqu île where one of the largest squares in Europe can be found: Place Bellecour, and further on, other famous squares like the Place des Célestins, Place des Terreaux, the Opéra, and l Hôtel de Ville are to be visited. You can also wander down pedestrian precincts like rue de la République and rue Victor Hugo. Along the Rhone River, make a tour to the Rhone River Banks, a urban park of 10 hectares, with restaurants and nice places to stroll along or rest. In December, the Light festival around December 8th: light shows all around the city and a very popular and festive celebration! For more information about the city: of culture and leisure The city s biggest park and green area, le Parc de la Tête d Or, is located just a few minutes walk from the campus. It is famous for its vast lawns, its lake, the extraordinary rose gardens, the tropical greenhouses and the free zoo. Jogging, cycling and roller-skating are available all around the 4 km ring. Near the park, the Cité Internationale is houses the Palais des Congrès, the Museum of Contemporary Art and a large complex of Cinemas. Finally, for those who like winter sports and water sports, the nearest ski slopes are 150km from Lyon and the Mediterranean Sea (French Riviera) is 300 km away! 27
