1 School of Nursing Post MSN Certificate Programs Admission and Progression Criteria Admission criteria are as follows: Ohio licensure or eligibility for Ohio licensure (out of state applicants). Hold an MSN degree from a professionally accredited nursing program (clinical masters preferred). o o For applicants holding a non-clinical MSN, additional prerequisite coursework may be required.* For applicants holding a clinical MSN in a specialty different from the track of application, additional coursework may be required.* Recent completion of the following prerequisite courses: graduate pathophysiology, advanced assessment, advanced pharmacology, and pediatric nutrition (Child & Adolescent track only.)* Health promotion (Family Psychiatric Mental Health track only) Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all graduate work Minimum of two to three years of recent clinical experience* Complete an application to The University of Akron Graduate School Complete a Health Requirements Report Form Complete state and federal background check Submit an essay describing professional goals Submit a resume outlining prior educational and work related experiences Additional track-specific criteria requirements** *Each program has track-specific criteria requirements. **Each applicant will be evaluated using a GAP analysis to identify additional coursework that may be required. Progression in the program: Any student who does not maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher will be placed on probation. Any student who receives two course grades of C or lower may be dismissed from the program. Any student who is unsatisfactory in the clinical portion of a course will fail the course. 2 POST MSN CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Post-MSN The Post-MSN certificate program is designed to prepare Adult/Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialists to complete additional course work required to sit for Nurse Practitioner certification. The Post-MSN Adult/Gero NP Certification Program prepares graduates to assume advanced practice positions as providers of primary health care to adults and older adults. Psychiatric Family Nurse Practitioner Post MSN This post- masters certificate program is designed for the primary and acute care Nurse Practitioner as well as Clinical Nurse Specialist who is looking to enhance their knowledge and skill set to effectively care for individuals with complex psychiatric and mental health needs. The program is designed to prepare participants to sit for the ANCC certification examination for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.This certificate offers the opportunity to augment your master s degree with additional nursing specialty area knowledge and skills. The coursework needed is dependent upon the coursework that was completed in your previous master s degree. A gap analysis will be completed with you to identify the specific courses that will be needed to complete this certificate. This is a hybrid curriculum with most classes meeting one evening a week with web-enhancement. 3 Child and Adolescent Health Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Post-MSN The Post-MSN Child and Adolescent Health Nurse Practitioner certificate program is designed for those nurses who hold the Master of Science in Nursing degree and are seeking preparation for the role of the pediatric nurse practitioner. Upon completion of the 17 credit hour program, the students are eligible to sit for the pediatric nurse practitioner certification examination. Post MSN students will be assessed on an individual basis and may be required to complete additional courses from the Child and Adolescent Health Nursing track in order to achieve the competencies required to sit for certification as a pediatric acute care nurse practitioner. Note: Due to the limited availability of acute care clinical sites, completed applications for a post-master s certificate in the Acute Care PNP program are due by March 15 th annually to be considered for the class starting the fall of the same year. 4 Adult/Gerontological Health Nursing Clinical Nurse Specialist Post MSN The Post-MSN certificate program of credit hours is designed for those nurses with a Masters degree in Nursing who want to complete the additional course work required to site for national certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in medical Surgical Nursing or Gerontological Nursing. The Post-MSN Adult/Gero Health Nursing CNS certification program prepares nurses to assume advanced practice positions in a variety of complex health systems environments providing leadership in interdisciplinary care. Post MSN Nurse Anesthesia Certificate The Post-Master s Nurse Anesthesia certificate program prepares Registered Nurses to become Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and requires 27months of concentrated theory and clinical practice. The program is built upon a core of biophysical sciences, pharmacology, principles of anesthesia, and professional role issues. Graduates of the program are prepared to deliver all types of perioperative anesthesia care to patients of all ages in a wide variety of health care settings and are eligible to take the National Certifying Examination. 6 CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS The Nursing Education and Nursing Management and Business Non-degree Certificate programs may be taken by current MSN and PhD students, and may also be taken as Post MSN. Nursing Education Certificate Program The nursing education curriculum is designed to prepare student to implement the academic role and responsibilities of the nurse educator in a variety of educational settings. The student develops competence in program and curriculum development, teaching strategies, and methods of evaluating learning in a variety of settings, including program evaluation. The capstone of nursing education is a practicum which allows the student opportunity to synthesize previous learning and to function in the full academic role. CREDITS 703 Classroom Teaching Clinical Teaching & Evaluation Nursing Curriculum & Development 2 Total 10 Nursing Management and Business Certificate Program The Nursing Management and Business certificate program curriculum is designed to prepare post-baccalaureate nurses and post-master s advanced practice nurses (i.e., clinical nurse specialists, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives) and/or current MSN and PhD student with the knowledge and skills needed to function effectively as patient care managers and leaders in a variety of organizational settings. Building on core and advanced practice courses, the student develops an understanding of leadership and organizational behavior theories plus competence in fiscal management, business strategies, human resource management, project/program planning and evaluation.
