Only call 911 for emergency situations. - An emergency is anytime you feel your life or someone else s life is in immediate danger or in harms way. Examples of a 911 emergency: Having trouble breathing or stops breathing Exhibiting heart attack symptoms or stroke symptoms Profuse bleeding Unconsciousness or not responding Suspected life threatening injury (ex. internal bleeding) due to blunt force Uncontrollable physical violence or threat of violence against self and others (ex. domestic violence or abuse, as it occurs) A crime in progress A fire is suspected Examples of when NOT to call 911: To place a complaint or provide feedback on services received from a public or private agency or business To acquire phone numbers or information To practice your emergency plan When emergency medical services, law enforcement, or fire rescue are NOT IMMEDIATELY needed
Call 311 if you need Orange County government information or services such as, but not limited to: Animal Control Code Enforcement Roads & Drainage Traffic Engineering and Zoning Utilities Call 211 for 24-hour crisis and suicide counseling services as well as referrals to local health and human services programs such as: Food, Housing, and Utility Assistance Youth and Child Care Issues Physical and Mental Health Services Elder Services
The Poison Help Centers ( ) are staffed with medical personnel able to answer specific questions about any poison and provide first aid guidance right after a poisoning is believed to have taken place. They assist in determining if the poisoning incident requires emergency services or could simply be treated at home. Examples of when to call a Poison Help Center ( ): If someone swallows the wrong medicine or too much medicine If someone breathes in a poison If someone gets poison in the eyes If someone swallows something that is not food or medicine If someone gets poison on the skin
Many 911 emergencies are due to injuries. There are actions we can all take to reduce injuries and the need to call 911. The following pages will discuss: 1. Motor Vehicle Safety 2. Poison Prevention 3. Fire Safety 4. Bicycle Safety 5. Pedestrian Safety 6. Water Safety: Drowning Prevention 7. Fall Prevention (for children) 8. Fall Prevention (for adults) The key is to ALWAYS THINK SAFETY! Ask yourself, is this safe or could I get hurt? If you feel the action may cause an injury or may be fatal, do not do it! Take all precautions necessary to make sure you and everyone else are safe.
Motor Vehicle Safety Ensure everyone in the car is restrained. - Make sure children are buckled-up in an appropriate and correctly installed car or booster seat. - Older children, teens, and adults should use a seatbelt every time. - The best place for children under 13 is the backseat, not the front seat. Do not drive while distracted. - Avoid using a cell phone, talking to passengers, or daydreaming. Stay focused only on the task at hand driving. Know and follow traffic laws, road signs, speed limits, and be a courteous driver. Poisoning Prevention Place all medications out of sight and out of the reach of children and others not involved in the medication treatment. Keep all household, yard, and car chemicals lockedup and secured. Be aware of poisonous plants and animals.
Fire Safety Install fire alarms on every level of a house, the kitchen, and in each bedroom. Make sure that all fire alarms work properly by testing them once a month and changing the batteries every 6 months. Do not leave any heating equipment (stove, space heater) or flame (candles, barbecue grill) unattended. Use them as directed, and follow instructions. Think safety! Have a fire extinguisher and know when and how to use it. Read the instructions found on the label ahead of time. Have a home fire escape plan that includes at least 2 ways to escape and a safe place in front of the house for the entire family to meet. Practice the fire escape plan every 6 months. Do not smoke inside or around a building. Cigarettes, in many cases, start fires. Call your local fire department for more tips and fire safety education.
Bicycle Safety Make sure the bike is the right size for the child or adult. Make sure the bike works properly. Adjust any loose brakes, seat, and wheels. Always wear a helmet that fits. Replace helmet if broken or approximately every 3 years. Use safety equipment such as knee and elbow pads. Enroll yourself and children in a bike safety and riding course. Pedestrian Safety Cross at an intersection with a crosswalk and light signals. Look both ways (left, right, and left again) to ensure there are no incoming vehicles. Use the sidewalk, not the road. Wear bright color clothing (neon colors, light colors). At night, make sure you are visible to vehicles. Use reflectors or take a flashlight with you.
Water Safety: Drowning Prevention Supervise children. Designate a water watcher. Place a self-locking, self-latching fence that is at least 4 feet tall around pools and other bodies of water. Never swim alone. Swim with a buddy. When boating, everyone should wear a life vest and make sure the driver has not been drinking alcohol. Learn to swim and teach your whole family how to swim by enrolling in lessons. If you are not a strong swimmer, wear a life vest that is U.S. Coast Guard approved. Learn how to deal with rip currents and avoid deep water at the beach. Be prepared for an emergency by: - Always having a phone with you or near the pool - Learning First Aid and CPR skills
Fall Prevention (for children) * Information below obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) * Check to make sure playground equipment is properly designed and maintained and there s a safe, soft landing surface below. Use home safety devices such as guards on windows that are above ground level, stair gates, and guard rails. These devices can help keep a busy, active child from taking a dangerous tumble. Make sure your child wears the appropriate protective gear, such as wrist guards, knee and elbow pads, and a helmet when playing sports. Supervise young children at all times around fall hazards such as stairs and playground equipment, whether you re at home or out to play.
Fall Prevention (for adults) Reduce clutter in home. Secure electric cords. Use only non-slip rugs. Have your vision checked yearly. Review your medications for side effects that may increase your risk of falling. Talk to your doctor about the medications you take and the side effects. Exercise to maintain or improve your balance. Eat healthy (calcium and vitamin D) to maintain strong bones and muscles. Use stools and stairs carefully to reach items. If at all possible, keep the items you often use at arms reach. Have a flashlight near nightstand and place night lights in hallways. Install rails in stairs, showers, near toilet, or other areas as appropriate.
