Overview Family & Passenger: Wear Bright Cloth Brighter is better! That's right, the brighter your clothing the better your chances are of being seen Personal Matters: Cell Phone use While Driving Yes, that's right. It's time to refresh on cell phone use while driving. Tired of hearing about it? Well then why are many people still doing it? Vehicle Safety: Emergency Road Kit The last thing we think about when we head out for a short or long trip is what happens if we have a vehicle emergency? Streets & Sidewalks: Pedestrian Safety We can all agree that as adults it is dangerous for us to cross the street... Environment: Cruise Control Cruise control is a great option and can save you on gas, but you have to use it safely

Family & Passengers Wear Bright Cloth Road safety is not just about what happens when you are behind the wheel. It is about anytime you take the roads. Whether it is driving, walking, running or bike riding the big difference is in a vehicle you are more easily seen. So, let's make sure before you head out on the road outside of your vehicle, you can been seen. Please make sure you review this great source: Brighter is better! That's right, the brighter your clothing the better your chances are of being seen. And when we say bright we mean really bright! Three colors that you do not want to wear are blue and green (unless fluorescent), gray and black. These colors blend into the color of the road surface and many background surfaces. You will blend in and not stand out. You should wear high visibility reflective clothing in the colors of red, yellow and orange. And you should wear these colors during the day as well as night. Be seen and be safe. Please make sure you review this with your children and family members as well. There is a great resource provided by The Department of Transport in the UK. Take the time to download this home-link sheet and got through the activities with your children. The direct link is:

Personal Matters Cell phone use while driving Yes, that's right. It's time to refresh on cell phone use while driving. Tired of hearing about it? Well then why are many people still doing it? We won't stop until everyone stops! Plus, in many parts of the world it is summertime and that means more people out on the roads. So here is the latest. Do you think using hands-free technology to text, tweet or respond to s while driving is safer than talking on a cell phone? You're wrong, according to the American Automobile Association. Take a look at the results for yourself. You may be surprised. Here is a link to the article:

Vehicle Safety Emergency road kit The last thing we think about when we head out for a short or long trip is what happens if we have a vehicle emergency? Do you have an emergency road kit in your vehicle? Well, you should. You can purchase a kit online from many different retailers or you can make one yourself. Either way, here are the things you should have in your emergency kit. First-aid kit Warning light, hazard triangle, or flares Reflective vest Tire gauge Jack and lug wrench Foam tire sealant or a portable compressor and plug kit Spare fuses Jumper cables or a portable battery booster Flashlight Gloves, hand cleaner, and clean rags Coolant hose repair kit and tape Extra clothes and small tarpaulin Water and nonperishable emergency food Windshield scraper Blanket and winter hat Chemical hand warmers Small folding shovel Bag of cat litter (place it under your wheels for more traction)

Streets & Sidewalks Pedestrian Safety We can all agree that as adults it is dangerous for us to cross the street. For those of us that have children, letting them experience their independence and cross the street on their own for the first time can be a very stressful experience. For the most part, we should make sure that they do not cross the street where there is heavy traffic activity, blind corners or hills or in areas that are not protected by traffic signals. One of the best websites out there on this subject can be found here: Honestly and sincerely. Take the time to review this with your children. It will save their life.

Environment Cruise Control Cruise control is a great option and can save you on gas, but you have to use it safely. For many of us the long and hot days of summer are upon us. We will be loading up our vehicles and heading out for vacation and weekend events. The windows are rolled up and the air conditioning is on. The radio is playing and the kids are getting restless. So...let's use the cruise control so we have one less thing to worry about. Well not so fast. Cruise control is a great option and can save you on gas, but you have to use it safely. Here are a few friendly safety reminders when using cruise control. Set your cruise control at a legal and safe speed based on traffic and weather conditions. Speaking of weather conditions, never use cruise control in the rain, snow or ice. Cruise control does not adjust for road conditions and you could find yourself hydroplaning or in a high speed spin. If you do find yourself in a hydroplane or spin, don't step on the brake. Instead, shift to neutral and let the vehicle slow down on its own. Because your foot is resting and off the accelerator, you still have to be ready for an emergency braking event. Keep both feet placed squarely on the floor and be prepared to react quickly. Never use cruise control going up a steep hill, not only is this not safe but you may end up using even more fuel to do so. Never use cruise going down a steep hill as well. You don't need the engine and all of that fuel consumption to travel down the hill. Don't use it in traffic, on city streets or areas where there are many traffic lights. It's dangerous and not fuelefficient at all.
