Building Businesses Globally The Rudolf and Valeria Maag International Centre for Entrepreneurship

As one of the world s leading and largest graduate business schools, INSEAD brings together people, cultures and ideas from around the world to change lives and transform organizations. A global perspective, cultural diversity and innovative thinking are reflected in everything we do. Around 140 international faculty members inspire more than 1,000 participants every year in our MBA, Executive MBA and PhD degrees. In addition, over 9,500 executives participate each year in INSEAD s Executive Education programmes. With campuses in Europe (France), Asia (Singapore) and Abu Dhabi, and partnerships with high-profile international institutions, INSEAD s business education and research span the entire world. With a track record of innovation and trailblazing over more than half a century, INSEAD has become The Business School for the World. At the Rudolf and Valeria Maag International Centre for Entrepreneurship (Maag Centre), we aim for INSEAD also to become the top business school in the world for entrepreneurship.

Welcome to INSEAD s engine for entrepreneurship Building Businesses Globally 1 Entrepreneurship is in INSEAD s DNA. The school s creation over half a century ago was itself an entrepreneurial act. It was the first business school to take a truly international approach. It pioneered company specific executive education. And it was the first school to open a second full campus in Asia a continent of entrepreneurs. In 2010, the Financial Times put us in the top ten in the world for entrepreneurship. Now, the Maag Centre makes our ambitions official. Our goal is to be the world s leading business school for entrepreneurship by We aim to energize and empower a generation of entrepreneurs to build businesses globally. By innovating in entrepreneurship research, teaching and outreach and developing specialized initiatives that integrate these activities we aim to create a strong impact in entrepreneurship. But we can only do so with your involvement. Whether you are a student or alumnus, an entrepreneur or would-be entrepreneur, a business leader or social innovator, a philanthropist or researcher, we offer you a platform and opportunities to achieve these ambitions together. Through our research, we see that the greatest difference between managers and entrepreneurs is that the managers analyse, while the entrepreneurs act to create value. Where others see problems and rules, entrepreneurs see opportunities and solutions. Society needs more entrepreneurship. Join us in addressing that need and creating a positive impact in the world. Filipe Santos Director of the Maag Centre Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship Academic Director for Social Entrepreneurship Paul Kewene-Hite Executive Director of the Maag Centre Affiliate Professor of Entrepreneurship

2 Building Businesses Globally Join us in building entrepreneurship globally Our mission Our mission is to have a profound impact on the building of new businesses through knowledge creation, and the development of entrepreneurial opportunities, capabilities and awareness in students and alumni thereby building significant value for the INSEAD community and society. We empower entrepreneurs to generate and realize value in a global economy. Our activities We accomplish our mission through three main types of activity which overlap and combine synergistically. _ Research: Developing, promoting and leveraging knowledge that is focused on the processes of business building. INSEAD has a large and academically respected entrepreneurship faculty by far the best outside the US. Many have practical experience of entrepreneurship from different perspectives, as well as research credentials. The school also has a strong cadre of adjunct faculty, more than 30 entrepreneurs in residence and a very strong entrepreneurship alumni network with whom to generate ideas and share results.

Building Businesses Globally 3 3 _ Teaching: Spearheading pedagogical innovations by providing transformative experiences to students and alumni in different aspects of entrepreneurship. Over 80% of MBA students take at least one of our 25 MBA and Executive MBA electives more than any other comparable business school. And our courses are distinctive, heavily engaging guest speakers and including simulations, business-creation field trips and real-time role plays. Courses such as Your First Hundred Days (YFCD), simulating in real time the acquisition and management of a company, are some of INSEAD s most notable successes of recent years. _ Outreach: Nurturing an entrepreneurial ecosystem that places the INSEAD community at the epicentre of opportunity flow. Our outreach and network-building has a particular emphasis on technology entrepreneurship in Europe and Asia. Events, web platforms and media activity are just some of the ways in which we reach out to the world. We are creating a virtuous circle, whereby our research feeds into our teaching and outreach, which in turn inspires new ideas and contributes to the quality of our research.

4 Building Businesses Globally Our themes We take a broad approach to the concept of entrepreneurship. In addition to our focus on the traditional area of new venture creation and growth, we are building depth of knowledge and networks through four specialized initiatives. _ Social Entrepreneurship: The process of developing, validating and mainstreaming innovative solutions to society s greatest problems anywhere in the world and with few resources is the work of social entrepreneurs. Our flagship executive education programme, the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Programme (ISEP) and the Social Entrepreneurship Catalyst help train seasoned social entrepreneurs as well as current students, uniting the entire INSEAD social entrepreneurship community to foster cross-fertilization of ideas and work. _ Corporate Entrepreneurship: Launched in September 2010, this initiative focuses on building new business units and divisions in the context of established corporations in both developed economies and emerging markets. Corporate entrepreneurship is taught through MBA electives as well as Bootcamps. We are also currently building up a network of alumni operating in this area as well as new programmes to help serve corporations which want to infuse entrepreneurship internally.

Building Businesses Globally 5 _ Acquisitions and Turnarounds: Focused on acquiring and leading small to mediumsized organizations to grow them organically or use them as a platform to consolidate a sector through further acquisitions. This is an area in which INSEAD has outstanding course offerings with Your First Hundred Days (YFCD), Realising Entrepreneurial Potential (REP), Leveraged Buy-outs (LBO) and Managing Corporate Turnarounds. We are reinforcing these courses by developing case studies and a new Acquisition Bootcamp, as well as an Acquisition Accelerator programme for MBAs. _ Science Entrepreneurship: INSEAD aims to become a focal point for technology entrepreneurship in Europe and Asia. This initiative seeks to build an ecosystem of academic entrepreneurs, investors, technology transfer offices and incubators to provide entrepreneurship expertise together with market entry capability to partners. We accomplish this through project sourcing workshops to match MBAs and Executive MBAs with early stage ventures as well as through our course offerings in Technology Commercialisation. We are also building partnerships with science & engineering schools and R&D laboratories.

6 Building Businesses Globally What we can do for you The following are just some examples of what we do and who we involve. Many projects bring together several of our key entrepreneurial themes, stakeholders and team members. Entrepreneurship Accelerator The Maag Centre has created an umbrella programme, the Entrepreneurship Accelerator, which is a system of events designed to promote entrepreneurship among INSEAD MBAs. The Accelerator adds to the MBA programme by offering Bootcamps, sales training, pitch mentoring, and culminates in the Business Venture Competition (BVC) and Global Entrepreneurship Forum (GEF) bringing alumni and MBAs together at the end of each MBA promotion. Designed for: MBA participants. More information: Contact: Paul Kewene-Hite This competition is the perfect platform to hone our skills and ideas, and to bring these ideas to business plans, which in turn will soon become real business ventures. We believe that we are all winners in this experience. Team GRK Health, EMBA December 2010, Winners of the 19th BVC Business Venture Competition The school s entrepreneurship competition for its MBA and Executive MBA participants has been running twice a year since More than 100 participants in 30+ teams submit and present their business venture to a panel of judges, competing for several cash prizes (which total 50,000 for the 22nd competition in 2011). Participants also gain valuable advice, credibility, media exposure and momentum. Designed for: MBA and Executive MBA participants. More information: Contact: Paul Kewene-Hite Main sponsor: The Skolkovo Innovation Centre Entrepreneurs and Social Entrepreneurs in Residence For the last eight years, INSEAD has been inviting successful professionals to be Entrepreneurs in Residence, mentoring MBA participants as they develop ideas for new ventures. Typically, there is one Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) campus visit (Europe and Asia) each week of the MBA programme. Recently, the programme has been expanded to include Social Entrepreneurs in Residence. Over the years, the number of EiRs has risen to 20 per campus at any one time. Designed for: MBA participants, entrepreneurs interested in sharing experiences and expertise. More information: Contact: Paul Kewene-Hite, Christine Driscoll

Building Businesses Globally 7 Entrepreneurship Bootcamp Our 48-hour, hands-on workshops build entrepreneurial muscle! They are held off campus for a group of 30 participants. These intensive weekend experiences were initially developed for our MBA students, but they proved so successful that we now run similar events for INSEAD alumni (often in association with National Alumni Associations). We also organize customized Entrepreneurship Bootcamps for other groups or organizations and are currently piloting Bootcamps for Social Entrepreneurship, Corporate Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurial Acquisitions. Designed for: INSEAD MBA students, INSEAD alumni and organizations who want a customized Bootcamp. More information: Contact: Paul Kewene-Hite Entrepreneurship Teaching Innovation Fund The teaching of entrepreneurship at INSEAD has always been pioneering. The Entrepreneurship Teaching Innovation Fund aims to take it to a new level. The goal is not simply to maintain a high quality of teaching in entrepreneurship, but also to create powerful new teaching materials and methods. This includes a new approach to the writing of case studies, as well as developing real-time roleplays, simulations, field studies and Bootcamps. We are sharing our innovations both within and beyond INSEAD. Designed for: teachers and researchers of entrepreneurship at INSEAD and elsewhere. More information: Contact: Filipe Santos, Patrick Turner (SGP) Main sponsors: Andy Phillipps, Timothy Bovard Amazing faculty sharing invaluable experience, sharp content, tremendous learning in such a short period of time, realistic context. Huge POSITIVE pressure that pushes your limits up, up, up. INSEAD graduate participant, Bootcamp The Maag Centre has developed a series of teaching materials based on actual INSEAD alumni experiences that give the complete story. What a difference! Antoine Duvauchelle, MBA December 2011

8 Building Businesses Globally Global Angel Investing Network (GAIN) This is an ambitious project to develop the infrastructure for a global network of earlystage investing for the INSEAD community. It aims to match INSEAD-connected investors with ventures founded or grown by alumni, providing mentoring and support as well as financing. As of May 2011 there were already 60 angel investors and 30 ventures signed up. Designed for: investors and entrepreneurs from the INSEAD community. More information: Contact: Kamal Hassan kamal.hassan@alumni.insead.edu Global Entrepreneurship Forum This day-long networking event is held twice a year (December in Singapore and June in Fontainebleau), coinciding with the finals of the Business Venture Competition. It is a unique chance for up to 200 or so students, alumni and invited guests to share knowledge and business opportunities, connecting entrepreneurial talent with smart capital. Designed for: MBA and Executive MBA participants, INSEAD alumni, invited entrepreneurs and investors. More information: Contact: entrepreneurship@insead.edu Main sponsor: Peer Kølendorf Social Entrepreneurship Catalyst The Catalyst provides a structured set of activities throughout the MBA programme for students who are passionate about social entrepreneurship. Its aim is to engage current students with INSEAD alumni and others involved in social entrepreneurship to create a thriving ecosystem. It integrates speaker and networking events, projects and internships, and interactive workshops, with the support of an online community. By the time they finish the programme, the hope is that many students will have transformed their passion and interest in social entrepreneurship into concrete career plans. Designed for: MBA students, social entrepreneurs and alumni passionate about the field. More information: Contact: Christine Driscoll As well as the projects and innovations listed above, the Maag Centre supports a range of courses for INSEAD s degree programmes (MBA, Executive MBA and PhD) and contributes to Executive Education. For a taste of our research output see knowledge.insead.edu/entrepreneurship.cfm. INSEAD Leading Entrepreneurs This is a research/media project to identify and celebrate leading, successful or simply highpotential entrepreneurs within the INSEAD alumni community. The Maag Centre is compiling a database, website and profiles of all those who meet our criteria. We are actively seeking further nominations. Designed for: the general public, the media, researchers, students, alumni entrepreneurs. More information: entrepreneurs Contact: Anne-Marie Carrick Thanks to the assistance of the SE Catalyst I have been able to really define what I aim to do after INSEAD. I knew I wanted to work in the world of economic development but I have clearly defined my goal, which is to raise a private equity fund in East Africa. Guy Brennan, MBA July 2011
