12 Combined Honours Combined Honours provides enormous flexibility and choice, enabling you to study a range of interesting topics from the two subjects taken in combination. Your choice of route through the combination can be shaped to suit your interests, strengths and career ambitions. In some cases this may also be influenced by the requirements of a professional body accrediting or governing a specific subject. Where this is applicable to a particular combination it will be outlined in the course material and/or on-line. Combining two subjects at degree level Our course may also be studied as part of our Combined Honours programme, providing the flexibility for you to study two subjects at degree level. The subjects and combinations are drawn from several disciplines and you may choose to study two closely related disciplines or two that are entirely unrelated. Whatever your chosen subject combination, you will be able to demonstrate to future employers your flexibility and breadth of experience and skills. Flexibility Once you have chosen your Combined Honours programme there is further flexibility in the amount of each subject you study. In Year 1 you will study equal amounts of your two subjects. In Year 2 the balance may vary from equal amounts of each subject to a major/minor combination where you focus more on one of your subjects. In Year 3, you may continue to study both subjects on an equal or major/minor basis. If you study both subjects in equal amounts, you will receive a joint award where the name of both of your subjects will appear in your degree title. For example, if you choose to study and Forensic Science equally you would obtain a BSc (Hons) and Forensic Science degree. If you choose to major in Forensic Science, your degree title would be BSc (Hons) Forensic Science with. Named degree route If you have studied a major/minor route in Year 2, you may be allowed to focus solely on your major subject in Year 3. This is called a named route pathway and results in a single subject award at the end of your course, eg a BSc (Hons) Chartered membership If you wish to gain the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society and be able to register with the professional body then the flexibility of options in Years 2 and 3 is greatly reduced. This currently means that students wishing to be eligible for GBC must take three units of in Year 2 (ie as a major route) and at least three units, including the dissertation, in the final year. You must also achieve a minimum of a second class honours classification. mmu.ac.uk/combinedhonours 12 Department of

I can say without a doubt that studying at MMU was the best choice for me. It has enabled me to develop myself academically, boost my confidence, and provide me with fantastic opportunities I would not have had if I had studied anywhere else. During my degree, I was able to study a wide range of topics such as neuropsychology, community psychology, developmental psychology, and even a unit that allowed me to critically evaluate historical and contemporary issues within psychology. I struggled initially with the statistical and neurological aspects of the course, but academic and support staff were on hand to support me. Joe Poole, BSc (Hons) and MSc Assessment Assessment methods vary between different units, but most units are assessed by a combination of coursework and formal examinations. Coursework can currently include problem solving, essays, reports, group projects, programming tasks, practical exercises and presentations. 16 Department of
