Summary University Teaching, Learning and Student Experience Committee The Higher Education Policy Institute s (HEPI) recent report on the Comparability of Degree Standards concluded that it is increasingly doubtful whether, in a diverse mass system incorporating significant student choice, a real degree of comparability, in the sense of equivalent levels of student learning achievement across all institutions and subjects, is practicable or even desirable. Despite this, interest in degree classifications is widespread and degree results are used as a measure for comparison in the main newspaper league tables. It is likely that degree results will continue to inform choice as increasing fee levels lead potential students to question the value for money of a university education and the long term benefits associated with having a degree. At the same time, universities are facing cuts in their budgets while under pressure to improve standards and enhance the student experience. Since the publication of the Universities UK report Beyond the honours degree classification in 2007, work has continued on the Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR). The HEAR is a potential replacement for the existing honours degree classification, but will run alongside it in the interim. It is intended that it will be issued to graduates in 2011/12 and Newcastle has been involved in the pilot. The HEAR will provide more information on a student s qualification, including details of the modules studied, how they have been assessed and their contribution towards the overall mark. Non credit-bearing activities such as prizes awarded, involvement in widening participation activities and volunteering will be included. This report includes data on Newcastle s degree classifications at University, Faculty and School level, sourced from the Portal, up to and including the academic year 2009/10. Programme level data are included as an appendix. In 2009/10, 17% of our graduates were awarded first class degrees, an increase of 2.3% on 2005/06. The change was statistically significant. There were differences in the proportion of firsts awarded by each faculty, with 26.8% Medical Sciences, 19.3% in SAgE and 14.5% in HaSS in 2009/10. At School level, firsts ranged from 35.2% in Biomedical Sciences to 7.3% in Law. The proportion of first and upper second class awards combined, often referred to as good honours, increased by 6.1% between 2005/06 and 2009/ % of our graduates received a good honours degree in 2009/10. The change was statistically significant. Medical Sciences awarded the highest proportion of good honours degrees in 2009/10 at 82.3%, followed by 80.6% in HaSS and 64.4% in SAgE. Within the Schools, Education, Communication and Language Sciences awarded the biggest proportion of good honours degrees in 2009/10, at 96.7%. The smallest was in Mathematics and Statistics at 56.5%. External data are only available at institution level or at subject level nationally, so it is not possible to show degree classifications, by subject at individual institutions. Degree classification data are included for the University s comparator group as a whole, and at subject level for the sector, both for the academic year 2009/10. Sector-wide results by JACS subject area show a pattern of higher proportions of first class awards in the science, engineering and medical subjects with the arts and humanities subjects generally at the lower end. In terms of good honours degrees, there are more arts and humanities subject areas at the top end of the rankings. In our comparator group of fourteen institutions, we ranked ninth for the proportion of firsts awarded in 2009/10 with 17%. Warwick awarded the most at 23.2% and Cardiff the least at 13.4%. For good honours degrees, we ranked fifth with 75.5%. Bristol was top with 80.8% and Queen Mary, University of London bottom with 64.8%. Final Degree Classifications Planning Office 1

University - percentage First class awards University Teaching, Learning and Student Experience Committee The proportion of degrees awarded (excluding unclassified and other) in the first class category increased from 14.7% in 2005/06 to 17.0% in 2009/10 or from 441 to 571 firsts. The difference of 2.3% is statistically significant (95% CI [0.5%, 4.1%]) (1). Over the same period, the total number of classified degrees awarded at Newcastle increased from 2,995 to 3,360 (+12.2%). The proportion of awards made across the University in the first and upper second class categories combined has increased by 6.1% over the five years. The difference of 6.1% is statistically significant (95% CI [3.9%, 8.3%]) (2). The MBBS and BDS are returned as unclassified degrees. Some consideration has been given to returning these degrees as classified, but modelling showed that this would have no positive impact on the University s Good Honours performance (UTLC, November 2006). Appendix 1 shows the number of distinctions awarded on the MBBS and BDS. The faculty was restructured during the period shown on the graph and results from the School of Psychology are included from 2007/08 onwards. Prior to this, Psychology was part of SAGE. Between 2007/08 and 2009/10, the proportion of first class awards in Medical Sciences increased by 4.8%. The difference is not statistically significant (95% CI [-1.9%, 11.4%]) (3), however the estimate is imprecise due to the small sample size. Final Degree Classifications Planning Office 2

In 2009/10, 82.3% of degrees awarded were firsts and upper seconds. The increase between 2007/08 and 2009/10 was 0.8%. The difference is not statistically significant (95% CI [-5.2%, 6.8%]) (4). There is a split between the two schools that make up the figures for Medical Sciences. In 2009/10, Biomedical Sciences awarded a greater proportion of firsts than Psychology (35.2% vs. 8.2%) and Psychology awarded a greater proportion of upper seconds (71.4% vs. 48.4%). HASS - percentage First class awards The proportion of first class degrees awarded in the faculty of HASS increased from 12.4% in 2005/06 to 14.5% in 2009/10. The difference of 2.1% is not statistically significant (95% CI [, 4.2%]) (5). The increase is statistically significant (95% CI [5.3%, 10.6%) (6). HASS awarded a smaller proportion of first class degrees than SAGE and Medical Sciences while the proportion of good honours awards at 80.6% in 2009/10 was closer to Medical Sciences (82.3%) and higher than SAGE (64.4%). Results from Psychology are excluded from 2007/08 onwards. Between 2007/08 and 2009/10, the proportion of firsts in SAGE increased from 16.9% to 19.3%. The difference of 2.3% is not statistically significant (95% CI [-1.2%, 5.9%]) (7). SAGE awarded a greater proportion of first class degrees than HASS. HASS awarded 14.5% in 2009/10. Since 2007/08, when Psychology moved to Medical Sciences, the proportion increased from 63.6% to 64.4%. The increase of 0.8% is not statistically significant (95% CI [-3.7%, 5.2%]) (8). SAGE award greater proportions of lower second and third class degrees than the other faculties. In 2009/10, 35.6% of degrees awarded in SAGE were lower second or third class, against 19.4% in HASS and 17.7% in Medical Sciences. Final Degree Classifications Planning Office 4

7 3. Medical Sciences - Percentage First class awards by School The table, below right, shows changes in the proportion of firsts awarded by Schools in Medical Sciences between 2008/09 and 2009/10. The graphs that follow the table show the proportion of Firsts awarded by each School between 2005/06 and 2009/10. Only two schools are shown in the faculty as the MBBS and BDS are returned as unclassified degrees. Psychology became part of the faculty in 2007/08, and from 2009/10 has offered one undergraduate degree. There is a marked difference between the percentages of firsts awarded by each of the schools, with a greater proportion of firsts awarded in programmes in Biomedical Sciences than Psychology. The proportion was up in some schools and down in others. In Architecture, Planning and Landscape, firsts fell from 17.9% in 2008/09 to 9.1% in 2009/10. BA Hons Architectural Studies (K100) is the biggest programme in the school, with 92 classified degrees awarded in 2009/10. The proportion of first class awards on this programme was down from 26.3% to 7.6% (from 21 to 7 awards) between 2008/09 and 2009/10. Education, Communication and Language Sciences awarded the greatest proportion of firsts in the Faculty in 2009/10 and had the biggest increase on the previous year, from 12.4% in 2008/09 to 20% in 2009/10. The school awarded classified degrees on just two programmes in 2008/09 (B620 BSc Hons Speech and Language Sciences and PQL0 BA Media, Communication and Cultural Studies). A much smaller proportion of firsts were awarded on PQL0 than B620 (5.1% against 26.7%) in 2008/09. In 2009/10, PQL0 moved to Arts and Cultures, which accounts for much of the change in Education, Communication and Language Sciences. Law awarded the smallest proportion of firsts at 7.3% in 2009/10, although this was an increase of 2.6% on 2008/09. Data by subject area (see section 10), shows that the same proportion of firsts was awarded nationally in 2009/10 in the subject area Law. In 2009/10, Mathematics and Statistics awarded the greatest proportion of firsts at 29.6%. This was a 9.2% increase on the previous year. Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering awarded 29.4% awards in the first class category in 2009/10, a 7.5% increase on the previous year. Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials awarded 28.8% firsts, a small fall from the previous year. Section 10 shows that the subject areas of Mathematical sciences and Engineering and technology had the highest proportions of first class awards nationally in 2009/10. The proportions of first class degrees awarded were lowest in Agriculture, Food and Rural Development (7.6%) and Biology (9.5%) in 2009/10 and both were down on the previous year. Only Architecture, Planning and Landscape and Modern Languages awarded a smaller proportion of good honours degrees in 2009/10 than in 2008/09. Good honours within HASS ranged from 96.7% in Education, Communication and Language Sciences to 69.9% in Architecture, Planning and Landscape. In 2009/10, awards were only made on B620 BSc Hons Speech and Language Sciences in Education, Communication and Language Sciences with 6 firsts, 23 upper seconds and 1 lower second. The biggest increase in the proportion of good honours awards was in Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering. The school gave 10 firsts and 15 upper seconds out of a total 34 awards in 2009/10. Most of the change relates to a smaller proportion of lower second class degrees being awarded on the programme H607 BEng Hons Electrical and Electronic Engineering between 2008/09 and 2009/10 (10 lower seconds out of 15 awards in 2008/09, 2 lower seconds out of 12 awards in 2009/10). Mathematics and Statistics awarded the highest proportion of firsts in the faculty in 2009/10 (29.6%), but the lowest proportion of good honours degrees (56.5%). While Mathematics and Statistics awarded the highest proportion of firsts in 2009/10, at 56.5%, the proportion of good honours was the lowest of any school in the University. In 2009/10, 66.1% of awards in the JACS subject Mathematical Sciences were first and upper second class. School rankings - Percentage First and Combined First and Upper Second class awards The graph below shows all schools ranked by the proportion of awards made in the first class category in 2009/10. It ranged from 35.2% in Biomedical Sciences down to 7.3% in Law. Schools in SAGE (and the School of Biomedical Sciences) dominated the upper half of the rankings with only two HASS schools (Education, Communication and Language Sciences and Modern Languages) in the top ten. Growth ranges from 12.9% in Biomedical Sciences to 0.7% in Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials. Nine schools had a fall in the proportion of first class degrees. The biggest was Civil Engineering and Geosciences (-5.4%). Schools in HASS tend to award fewer first class degrees than those in SAGE, but six out of the top ten schools in terms of growth were in HASS. Ranked list of Awards by Subject all institutions Addressing sector-wide results, the graph below shows the proportions of firsts awarded between JACS subject areas across all institutions (unclassified degrees are excluded). The science, engineering and medical subjects generally appear at the top end of the rankings, with the arts and humanities based subjects showing at the lower end. In 2009/10, more than 30% of students in Mathematical Sciences were awarded first class degrees, while the proportion was 7.3% in Law. Our own position generally followed the national picture, with a greater proportion of Firsts in the science and engineering subjects and smaller proportions in arts and humanities. Warwick, King s Bristol and Nottingham had falls between 2008/09 and 2009/10. 26 Appendix 1 - Statistical Analysis University Teaching, Learning and Student Experience Committee Two Sample Proportion and hypothesis tests have been used to compare two independent groups. For example: - the percentage of firsts awarded in 2005/06 vs. the percentage in 2009/10 The tests have been performed in SSCstat software (run in Excel), available from the Statistical Services Centre at Reading University. The results of the analysis are shown in the tables (numbered 1 to #) below. In (1), we are comparing the percentage of classified degrees awarded in the first class category in 2005/06 against the percentage in 2009/10. The percentage increased from 14.7% in 2005/06 to 17.0% in 2009/10. We think of these figures as estimates of the underlying true proportions as they are based on a samples rather than the whole population, and so we calculate a confidence interval based on the sample sizes. The difference between the observed percentages is 2.3% points. To test whether this difference is statistically significant, we define a null hypothesis (there is no difference between the proportions) and an alternative hypothesis (there is a difference between the proportions). We then consider how unusual the observed data is, under the assumption that the null hypothesis is true. The statistical outputs used to inform the conclusions are: - the confidence interval (CI) for the true underlying difference between the proportions. A result with a narrow interval around the observed value is more reliable than a wide one and allows us to say that the result is more precise. If the two values which define the Confidence Interval (CI) have different signs, and therefore straddle zero, it is possible that the proportions are the same and we can say that the observed difference is not significant. - the p-value which comes from the hypothesis test is the probability of observing a difference as large as or larger than the observed difference. A low p-value (historically less than 0.05) is evidence to reject the null hypothesis and to regard the data as more unusual. In (1), the output shows that the CI is 0.5% to 4.1%. The CI does not straddle zero, so we can say that we are 95% confident that the two observed values are statistically different. The CI is quite narrow, so the estimate is precise. The p-value is which is evidence to reject the null hypothesis.
