1 UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI Kansas City UMKC About The University The University of Missouri-Kansas City is strategically located in the second largest population center of the state. It has both the opportunity and the obligation to serve this region and society by developing programs that are appropriate to its mission as an urban university. The objectives of UMKC are to ensure quality instruction, obtain eminence in scholarly and creative endeavors, and provide leadership in continuing education and public service across a broad range of disciplines. With an enrollment of more than 13,000 students, UMKC offers diverse educational opportunities in undergraduate, graduate, professional and continuing education. Looking into the future, the UMKC Information Technology Executive Council recommended a strategic plan that involved an investment in the information technology infrastructure to support the campus strategic initiatives into the next millennium. This plan would allow UMKC to provide high bandwidth and high-speed data and video applications for today s and tomorrow s application needs. The high-speed network would also support the UMKC campus strategic initiatives, which include the use of technological tools to enhance learning, research and administrative programs. The implementation of this strategic plan would allow UMKC to preserve its competitive nature as well as to provide its students with advanced learning tools to make the most of their education. To achieve the plan, the council decided to start by replacing the current cabling infrastructure within the campus buildings, with the IBDN structured cabling system by NORDX/CDT. The Issues & Challenges The original voice and data network was installed in 1984, prior to the TIA/EIA standards for data cable installations. These standards set strict procedures and practices for the installation process. These procedures are critical to insuring that the system will support high-speed data rates and to properly support applications such as the ones that UMKC uses and is aiming to implement. The original, installed cable is a voice grade cable that does not support Fast or Gigabit Ethernet applications, necessary for UMKC future applications. UMKC now requires faster-rated cables, connectors, and patch cords in order to meet its strategic plan. Most of the campus buildings were built before 1979, before the Information Age technological revolution. UMKC buildings must be in compliance with TIA 568A cabling standards as well, its buildings require a compliance with the 569 standard for pathways and spaces, the 607 standard for grounding and bonding, and the 606 standard for administration. A particular re-cabling challenge lies in the campus buildings that use janitor s closets, bathrooms, electrical and/or mechanical rooms as telecommunications closets and equipment rooms. This usage creates a hazardous environment for network transmission systems. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI KANSAS CITY UMKC - 1
2 Meeting the Challenge This project consists of the installation of NORDX/CDT s IBDN structured cabling system for the UMKC s 40 major buildings and 50 residential type structures on its two campuses, Volker and Hospital Hill located in Kansas City. Using the IBDN system guaranteed a reliable high performance network which we were looking for,... We chose NORDX/CDT s IBDN system because of its network performance. This was a crucial factor in meeting the University mission. IBDN test results and performance measurements indicated quality and superior engineering of the cabling system. Using the IBDN system guaranteed a reliable high performance network which we were looking for, explained Vicky Doerr, in charge of the building s communications infrastructure. The Lifetime Application Assurance Program indicates NORDX/CDT s commitment to its customers, that the IBDN system will meet the network speeds and protocols of the future. The retrofit project began in early 1997, and includes the following: - The Administrative Center building is where the offices of the Chancellor and Vice Chancellors are located and most student services including Admissions, Registration and Records, Financial Aid and Student Loans. - The Residence Hall building houses over 330 students and was also remodeled in The renovations included the installation of high-speed Ethernet connections in each room, this system is known on campus as ResNet. - The Haag Hall building originally built in 1937 and home to several classrooms and departmental offices. - The Royall Hall building houses offices for departments in the College of Arts & Sciences and includes two large auditorium classrooms, a student lounge and an astronomical observatory on the roof. This building has carrels for graduate students with Ethernet outlets for connecting to the campus network. - The Ernest Manheim Hall building (formerly Geosciences) is office space for faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences. The entire campus project will be completed over several years and future cabling and re-cabling will include: - The new construction of the Science and Technology Center. - The renovation and recabling of the School of Dentistry. - The re-cabling of the School of Law, built in 1979 which consists of offices, classrooms, library, lounges, and a courtroom. - The re-cabling of the Miller Nichols Library, home to text-based as well as electronic resources. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI KANSAS CITY UMKC - 2
3 The Design Each classroom is cabled to support the integration of applications such as video, data, cable TV, VCR, and distance-learning programs. The School of Law re-cabling project shows that the classrooms will be wired to provide data and connectivity for students desktop notebook computers. Each classroom is cabled to support the integration of applications... The Products UMKC currently has a fiber optic and copper network between buildings. Plans to install the IBDN GIGABIT SYSTEM 2400 have been set for the Science & Technology Center and the School of Dentistry Center. This system is comprised of IBDN PS5 Enhanced Connectivity and IBDN 2400 series UTP cable. This system delivers 200 MHz of system bandwidth. Future installations will include NORDX/CDT s most recent system, the 4800LX SYSTEM, delivering 300 MHz of system bandwidth. UMKC currently has a fiber optic and copper network between buildings. The data communications network will be converted from an FDDI backbone to Gigabit Ethernet in the summer of This will require the installation of new switch routers at the main node sites. The 10Mbps hubs will be replaced with 10/100 switches in the telecommunications closets. UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI KANSAS CITY UMKC - 3
4 The Installation This installation is particularly unique for the Residence Hall where each room is wired to include 330 voice and data outlets to enable students to connect directly into the 10Mbps Ethernet UMKC Enterprise Network. Students no longer have to go to a library or computer science lab to obtain their information. UMKC also has an Intranet that allows staff and students to keep aware of the policies, events, changes, admissions, class schedules, etc. The UMKC network allows students to have access to its research system, known as CCTR, which also acts as the gateway for student . This allows to be sent and received and stored as well as providing highspeed access to the Internet from each residence room....high-speed access to the Internet from each residence room. Fast Ethernet to the desktop and Gigabit Ethernet in the backbone are used for data and analog synchronous video for video applications. In the future, UMKC plans to implement ATM for data and near broadcast quality over ATM will be used for video applications. Information outlets have been installed in classrooms and laboratories, as well as faculty and staff offices. UMKC Outlook for the Future This fully integrated cabling system is a dream come true for faculty, students and administration. The IBDN cabling system integrates and delivers advanced, user-friendly technology to enhance teaching and instructional programs. It is a reliable, robust network that allows students, faculty and staff to take full advantage of the tools used in classroom instruction, distance learning, research, electronic mail and administrative applications. UMKC IBDN installations have been certified by NORDX/CDT under its Warranty Program that provides the installed connection and distribution hardware with a 25 year warranty that includes labor costs and the network and voice applications with a Lifetime Application Assurance. All future completed IBDN installations will also receive this certification status. This IBDN cabling infrastructure provides UMKC with facilitated network connectivity, an extensive bandwidth capacity and high-speed to handle sophisticated data, video, and voice applications as well as the management tools and the flexibility to meet future requirements. A cabling infrastructure designed and able to handle future protocols will also entice students to enroll at the UMKC for its competitiveness in post secondary education.
