6 HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM Today s traditional high school experience works for many kids, but for kids who move around a lot, the usual model may not be ideal. Our high school program is wrapped with counseling, choices, community, and online tools to help teens identify their goals, chart their own paths, and enjoy their journeys. TUITION-FREE ONLINE PUBLIC SCHOOLING K 12 online public schools offer full-time, tuition-free public schooling that is individualized to fit your child s learning needs. 9 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Will my child interact with other children? All K12 families are part of a committed, supportive, international online community. Your child can participate in clubs covering a wide variety of interests, and take advantage of support groups specifically designed with military children in mind. Many K12 online public schools offer field trips and other in-person activities, giving students a chance to combine social and educational opportunities. An independent study of full-time K12 programs found that online students social skills were at least on par with if not higher than those of students in traditional schools.* What happens if we move? In most cases, if you move, school moves with you. The K12 curriculum is consistent across all options, whether you re in a public online partner school, one of our private schools, or using K12 independently. This provides continuity in your child s education and eliminates the need for course content repetition or exclusion from Honors or AP courses. The K12 global community also comes with you when you move. If my child is enrolled in a K12 online public school, what happens if I get deployed and my child is placed with a designated guardian? Will we have to change schools? Students enrolled in a K12 online public school can usually remain enrolled in the same school, with the same teacher, even if they move to a different neighborhood/school district within the same state. Because K12 online public schools are part of each state s public school system, eligibility requirements vary. Relocation to another state will require transfer to a K12 online public school in that state. How does K12 address the needs of struggling students? What about gifted children? The K12 curriculum has been highly praised by educators and parents alike for its ability to support individually paced learning and to help get students on track or move ahead. The curriculum can accommodate kids with learning challenges, and makes it easy and convenient for students to repeat a course. A robust Advanced Learner Program (ALP) for grades 3 8 gives gifted kids the chance to further explore subjects of particular interest, and high school students can take Honors and AP courses. 10 REAL FAMILIES. REAL STUDENTS. REAL LIFE. When we moved to Washington D.C., my older daughter was about to start eighth grade. The base offered bus service to an area school, but it could mean up to a 2-hour commute each way. She struggled in math and writing and was too shy to ask for help. That was when we were introduced to K 12. My daughter was able to work at a pace that allowed her to catch up on subjects she was not as sure about, which helped give her the confidence to enter high school and college with her head held high. Five years later, after settling into our new home in Florida, our youngest was ready for kindergarten, but was told that she had to wait another year because of her September birthday. K 12 came to our rescue again. She accepted the challenge a year before Florida said she could, and kept on trucking through first grade as well. Now we have moved to Washington State, and my youngest does not have any worries about entering second grade because she brought her school with her. The K 12 teachers have gone out of their way to make a connection to her, and she feels very close to them, even though she has actually met them only a few times for field trips. 11 My husband is an Apache pilot for the U.S. Army, and with his crazy schedule and deployments K 12 makes transitions easier on both of our girls. It also makes vacations or going home to see family easier because we can bring school with us. K 12 is also easier on me, as I have Lupus and Crohn s disease and sometimes just getting out of bed can be a chore. On those days, my daughter gets in my bed with the laptop and school happens anyway. This is especially amazing when my husband is deployed I m not sure how I would get her to school on bad days. My husband came home from a year-long deployment in February. Since they re enrolled in Colorado Virtual Academy [a K 12 online public school], my girls had the chance to spend time with their dad. He jumped in and did school with them on his leave. These are special moments and great bonding after all that lost time. We have met some amazing people while at COVA, and the understanding and flexibility for our life fits our family so well. K 12 helps us adjust to our crazy lifestyle. BEVERLY, CO
