4 President s report The 100th season of the University of Queensland Cricket Club paralleled the glorious history of an amazing club. In our 101st season, we can take great pride in the efforts put in by the current and former player groups, and peers of the club, as we all attempted to follow on from the triumph and enjoyment of the centenary season. While we were not able to see the individual and team on-field success of the previous year, we were still able to enjoy our domination of the Grade competition with yet another Club Championship win. The overall success appeared on the back of a 2nd Grade Men s T20 premiership and the women claiming their first T20 premiership. This third consecutive Club Championship is testament to the strength of the foundation that club coach Jarrod Turner, and his coaching group, have built over the last few years across all tiers of the club. Scott Walter also played some games. We congratulate Jess Jonassen on her great success as a match-winning member of the successful Australian World Cup T20 side. Looking forward, season will be the 10th season for the women s club, which is a great achievement for the ladies, and yet another opportunity to reflect on the significant and diverse history of the club. The ladies have done a great job to develop a strong culture, and are continually doing great things to build the club. Sadly, this year, we mourn the loss of a club great. Bob Crane life member, Vice President, and former 1st Grade Captain will be fondly remembered by the club and all those who were fortunate enough to share a part of his life. to do everything in its power to ensure the club continues to grow so that many more can share the type of experiences myself, Barry, and all UQCC members have had been fortunate enough to enjoy over the last 101 years. I must also thank, on behalf of the club, the efforts of David Biggs and Ravin Raj in providing stability and guidance for a rapidly developing club over their many years of service in and around the executive committee. Finally, I am excited to see the development of many new and ongoing partnerships and relationships that continue to grow with the club. The support of Andrew Crook at Crook Publicity and Douglas Bates at FIIG Securities is measurable financially, and in the contribution and leadership given to the junior club. Furthermore, the relationship with Michael Duff at GHD has seen measurable benefit in the women s club, and again the RE has kept all players in peak physical and mental condition. Also, the reinforcement of the Old Boys network with Ian Elk s regular newsletter has given us all a chance to laugh and reconnect with the past history of the club. Thanks to all for your support of the UQCC Blues, and I look forward to sharing time with you in season Steve Hunt President Thank you to our sponsors: To single out a handful of notable contributors to the running of the club this year, I must first thank the Immediate Past President, Geoff Teys. If someone was to say that he did the entirety of my job for me, I would be forced to say that is an approximation and is only partially true he also did all of Matt Adam s job. Yet again. The ongoing support of our club Patron, Barry Maranta, is invaluable, and the executive committee continues R I d rather be at the E University of Queensland Cricket Club 3

5 Secretary s report As UQCC rolled into its 101st season, we all had high hopes of replicating the success of And while most teams made finals, it was a combination of rain and coming third that brought us all unstuck. It may not have been our finest hour on the field season-wise, but we continue to build, develop and thrive it s what The Blues do. 1st and 2nd Grade both made finals, but for Twos the trip to Redlands was too much on a wet deck and with an obstinate groundsman. Having a strong 2nd Grade while your 1st Grade makes finals displays the depth this club has, and Elliot Ryan and his boys know how to play cricket while enjoying a lemonade or two off the field. In 1st Grade, a new captain in Michael Philipson and a new gun recruit in Andy Michael crafted their way to a GF, but that ol nemesis Toombul were too much at AB Field. 3rd Grade proved another breeding ground for talented youngsters plying their trade. Both teams, skippered ably by Benny Walter and Keg Broekman, proved to be competitive throughout the season. Only Keg s team made it through to the semis, to be halted by a soggy Bob Young Oval. Fours and Fives are always a mix of younger blokes coupled with lower grade stalwarts who know how to sledge better than they play (I m looking at you, Jenkins). Fours, aka The Dynasty (self-proclaimed mind you), found themselves in finals, but beaten by an even older lower grade stalwart in Gramenz s Wests team. Fives were struck with an ever-revolving door of players, a lack of serious boozers, and yet another frustrating finish in fifth. I won t talk too much about juniors, Sunday Legends and Over 40s, except to say the game of cricket at UQCC is strong at both ends of the age spectrum! Lastly, I have a larger than usual list of people to thank. Firstly, to thank the Exec for their great work over the past year sporting organisations are a tough beast, but Hunty, Ravin, JT and Biggsy all do a great service to the club. Also a big thank you goes out to the skippers of all the teams, plus the selection crew of Tom Tuffley and Mick Gallen; was a pleasure harassing you all via , text and at training week after week. Also a big shout out to Keegan Peach captaining a 6th Grade side is incredibly hard, and you really did a great job under at times tough circumstances. Last of all I want to thank two special members of the club Craig Philipson and Lynda Petherick. Craig has been a wonderful Club Captain since 2006, and he has been a great leader through a golden age for the club. Lynda has been the heart and soul of UQCC women s cricket for 10 seasons, and has done more hours helping out than anyone else bar JT. I now set them both a challenge Craig to come play in 6th Grade (just eight days will do!), and Lynda to set up a cricket club at the Chinese University she is lecturing at. Looking forward to season 102! Madams Secretary 6th Grade (1), aka Team Peach, struggled at points, but won the game that mattered (the Derby), and had a few giant killing wins to finish midtable. The return of M Adams to the 6th Grade (2) captaincy is something you get to read about later in this report. The women s teams weren t quite as successful as they would have hoped, but the depth in the sides has improved dramatically. 1st Grade was competitive, while Twos continued to build on their skills and competitiveness. 4 University of Queensland Cricket Club

6 Life Members Under the club s constitution, agreed to by the Sports Union, the committee was entitled to nominate upwards of six Life Members in the first year, with a maximum of two per year thereafter. At the AGM in 2012, the following new Life Members were appointed. John Marshal Buchanan (No 403) John Buchanan was educated at The Southport School, and played his early cricket at Southport Cricket Club. He first appeared at UQCC in the season, and played through to , with a gap of two years spent in Townsville. His on-field career consisted of 99 matches for First Grade, scoring 1840 runs, with three centuries, at an average of As a fast medium right hander, he took 233 First Grade wickets at 17.5 apiece fine all-rounder s figures which gained him Queensland Shield selection in He captained the club in , prior to his transfer to Townsville; his captain s report gave promise of the later off-field value he would become to our club, to Queensland and to Australia as a coach, by making some insightful and analytical observations on areas and methods of improvement for our club s future performance. John also served two years on the Club s Executive in After a couple of seasons in the Lancashire League in the UK as a player/coach, he returned to our club as a coach of First Grade in , and again in , when the team won the premiership for the first time since Bill Buckle s side. The following year commenced a five-year stint coaching Queensland, resulting in two Sheffield Shield wins (after nearly 70 years of trying) and two one-day wins. This propelled him into the prestigious position of Australian coach, where he helped achieve 15 Test wins on the trot. His coaching career has also taken him to Middlesex, the IPL, the English Test side, and currently to New Zealand. John was a teacher and university lecturer by profession, and holds a BAMs from UQ, a Dip Teaching from Griffith Uni, and an M Sports Admin from the Uni of Alberta, Canada. He has been a contributor to the success of the UQCC Test Breakfasts. Brian Andrew Courtice (No 456) Andrew Courtice, educated at BBC, made (and still makes) a significant contribution to UQCC s fortunes, both on and off the field. He played in 168 matches from to , scoring 6328 runs at 37.2, with 14 centuries (top score 194), taking 97 catches and 92 wickets with medium paced off breaks. He captained First Grade from to (eight seasons), and won the premiership in , scoring a record 959 runs in the process. His playing career included Sheffield Shield and one day appearances for Queensland, as well as for Nottingham Seconds, Queensland Colts, and Combined Australian Universities. In , he toured Zimbabwe with an Australian Under 25 team. His off-field cricket activities have been no less impressive. He has served on our club s Executive from to , and to , the last eight seasons as President. During his Presidency, WEP Harris died, necessitating a reorganising of the Executive and a reallocation of the activities previously attended to by WEP. Old Boys representation was introduced, and protracted and difficult negotiation was carried out with the University authorities concerning the erection of the new pavilion. Andrew became (and still is) a Trustee of the new Foundation formed to raise money for the club. His continuing interest in the club is shown by his appearances as MC at the recent Centenary Dinner, as well as at every UQCC Test Breakfast, where his dry wit contributes largely to the success of those events. His profile in the sporting world remains high, having served as a State cricket selector for five seasons, three as Chairman of Selectors; he also has participated in an ABC radio show on Saturday mornings for some years. Andrew obtained a B Com and LLB from The University of Queensland, and is a solicitor by profession. University of Queensland Cricket Club 5

7 Vale Clyde Percy Low (No 294) Leonard Edward Thurecht Born: 3 December 1928 at Brisbane Died: 12 August 2012 at Brisbane Born: 1924 Died: 10 January 2013 at Brisbane Clyde Low was a right-hand fast medium bowler and batsman, who played season for Colts, and for UQCC in his only season for the club. Educated at CEGS (now ACGS) and the Teachers Training College, he is chiefly remembered for taking one of our rare First Grade hat-tricks, in the middle of taking 4 wickets in 5 deliveries against Easts. After graduating with a Bachelor of Education, he became Headmaster of Maryborough West State School, and District Inspector, Brisbane South before his retirement. Ronald Francis James Wood Born: 30 November 1921 at East Brisbane Died: 5 January 2013 at Brisbane Educated at CEGS (now ACGS), Ron Wood obtained his medical degree at Queensland University towards the end of World War II. He played in C grade in as an all-rounder. After the war, he joined the Army as a medical officer with the rank of captain. He later specialised in ophthalmology. He was active in the Royal Historical Society of Queensland for almost 60 years, serving as its President from 1989 to Len Thurecht served in the RAF during World War II, and obtained his qualification as a surveyor after the war. He played lower grade cricket for UQCC, commencing in For almost a decade during the late 50s and 60s, he played regularly in UQCC Old Boys teams. Garnet Reginald Hills (No 313) Born: 18 December 1925 at Toowoomba Died: 2 April 2013 at Brisbane Garney Hills was educated at Toowoomba Grammar School, later obtaining a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Arts at Queensland University. He was a fast medium right arm bowler, with appearances in First Grade in season He also toured with the University side under Clem Jones to play Sydney University at the Sydney University Oval in 1953, scoring 33 not out in Queensland s second innings. His teaching career took him to Toowoomba Grammar, King s School (Parramatta), and finally BBC for 32 years before his retirement. 6 University of Queensland Cricket Club

8 Frederick Robert Crane (No 361) Born: 10 July 1942 at Mullumbimby (NSW) Died: 6 April 2013 at Brisbane Bob Crane was educated at Lismore High School and afterwards came to Queensland University to do engineering. He played in the lower grades before reaching First Grade in season From there he never looked back. He had a subsequent First Grade career of 171 matches, and a First Class career for Queensland of 23 matches. He played over 16 seasons for UQCC, (three as captain), despite obtaining his Bachelor of Engineering in He is generally regarded as one of the two best all-rounders to play for the club, the other being Tom Veivers. Like Tom, he was a forceful left-hand bat and right-hand offspinner. He scored 4235 First Grade runs at 27.5, and took 265 First Grade wickets at 19.4 with flight, drift and accuracy. As a first slip, close to the wicket fielder, or fielder off his own bowling, he was peerless; as a measure of his all-round ability, he took 185 catches in the field no one else comes close. Note: Those who attended the Centenary Dinner, and regular readers of recent club annual reports, will understand that we have adopted a chronological numbering system for all those who have played First Grade. The appropriate numbers are set out here. Should any other player be interested in finding out his number, they are listed on page 63, or contact John Biggs on phone for mroe information. He captained Queensland Colts in the Syd Gregory Cup in For Queensland, he scored 995 runs at 24.7, took 32 wickets at 40.12, and collected 35 catches, mainly at first slip. In club administration, he served 12 seasons on the UQCC Executive, including two on the grading committee and two as Club delegate to the Queensland Cricket Association. As a consulting engineer, Bob worked in London, Malaysia, Mount Isa, as well as Brisbane. Bob was appointed a Life Member of our club in 2010 as a reward for his dedication and service. Always a gentleman, he was respected by his club mates and his opponents. His personal battle against pancreatic cancer over the past three years drew admiration from us all. 9 UQCC Foundation Trust The trust was formed for two purposes to act as a funds reserve prior to the construction of the new pavilion, and to provide for the ongoing development of University cricket. It was established under a Deed of Trust, and is administered by trustees with the assistance of a Finance Committee. The Trustees are John Biggs, Andrew Courtice and Keith Jennings. We continue to seek donations from past and present players, and ask for your support for the trust to provide for the ongoing development of University cricket. Keith Jennings for the Trustees 11th Test Breakfast Michael Kasprowicz kindly stepped in as guest speaker at our 11th Corporate Breakfast held on Wednesday 7 November 2012 at the Royal on the Park Hotel, Brisbane. He gave an interesting perspective on his cricket career, including memories of WEP and his time playing for Queensland and Australia. MC Andrew Courtice was his usual very entertaining self. This year s 12th Breakfast will be held on Tuesday 19 November, and we have secured former England Test Player and renowned commentator Jonathan Agnew as the guest speaker. The Vice-Chancellor of UQ, Professor Peter Høj, will also be in attendance. The breakfast is the Club s main fundraiser each year and we are very grateful for the continued support of it by Old Boys and people connected with the Club. 10 Coach s report It was always going to be difficult to replicate the success across the board this year following our history-making Centenary Season in In saying that, UQCC still managed to add a bit more silverware to its already bulging trophy cabinet. Preparation for the season commenced in July to ensure that the club started the season strongly, as it had in the year prior. Sharing the facilities with various national U19 squads due to their World Cup matches and training certainly challenged our pre-season preparations; however, all players managed to find alternative ways to get ready for the season ahead. Like the season previous, the UQCC Blues performed well in most grades, making the semifinals in five of the six grades. Due to this consistent performance across the grades, as well as another strong showing from the two women s teams, we were awarded the Club Championship for an amazing third season in a row. This award is presented to the best performed club for the season. Despite UQCC partaking in many finals, it was only 2nd Grade who took home the winner s trophy, with a fantastic performance in the T20 final at Allan Border Oval. This season we have had a great number of players who represented Queensland, and also Big Bash franchises around the country. I would like to congratulate them all on a fine season at the next level, and in particular those who were a part of the successful Queensland Bulls One-Day and Brisbane Heat T20 campaigns. On an individual level, it must be noted that Chris Hartley was awarded the Ian Healy Trophy (State Player of the Year), One-Day Player of the Year, Players Player and Fielder of the Year. Congratulations also to our club major award winners; Andy Michael and Ben Davis for winning the WEP Harris Medal for best player, Hannah Clarke for winning the Tom Corcoran Spirit of Cricket Award, and Mick Gallen, the EJD Stanley Award recipient for his dedication to the club. They are all well-deserved winners. Personally I would like to congratulate one of the all-time UQCC greats on a fantastic 1st Grade and professional career. One of my best mates, Craig Philipson, has been a fantastic leader both on and off the field throughout his time at the club, and we are certainly a lot better off for having him involved. His playing and captaincy record speaks for itself, and on behalf of all UQ players and supporters, I wish him all the best in his post-cricketing future. Craig has certainly given the current playing group great direction, and I m sure they we will all flourish because of his great leadership. Finally, I would like to thank the following people and groups for their support over the past 12 months. To Michael Brundle and the group of coaches who have assisted in delivering the best club cricket program possible your dedication to the job has been second to none, and all players have greatly benefited from your time and expertise. Secondly to Geoff Teys, Steve Hunt and the UQCC committee, thank you for your ongoing support of the cricket program at UQ. It has been a very active 12 months, and with your many thankless hours, we continue to be the number 1 club in Queensland. Finally to all the players for your dedication and support of the UQ cricket program. You are the reason why we have been named Club Champions for a third year, and there is no reason why we can t go on to bigger and better things next season. I have no doubt that there isn t a better club to play or coach at in the competition. At Uni, we pride ourselves on playing the game hard in the right spirit, having a lot of fun, and not taking ourselves too seriously. Our big challenge for the younger group that is coming through is to continue this, but train hard at the same time. The harder we train, the better we will perform and the greater the refreshments will taste. The other part of the club that I would like to see improve is more current players assisting with the off-field projects that keep the club running. Whether it s as simple as organising a social function, assisting in the canteen or becoming a part of the committee, your role will go a long way in taking the club to the next level. So let s get stuck in at training and supporting the club, have an enjoyable off-season and I look forward to our challenge ahead of going bigger in Jarrod Turner Club Coach University of Queensland Cricket Club 9

14 First Grade report was a tough, yet very encouraging and successful year for the Blues. With the likes of Craig Philipson and Jarrod Turner retiring at the season end, it was time for the younger generation to step up and be noticed. We made all the finals series T20, one day and two day competitions only to unfortunately be knocked out in the T20 semi final by the eventual winners, Valleys, and lose to our rivals Toombul in the one day and two day finals. Some main highlights of the season were from Peter Clarke, who made his maiden 1st Grade hundred at WEP (with his brother watching on), as did Ben Davis at Gold Coast in the two day competition. Our new Norths recruit, Andy Michael, also made his first hundred for the Blues and took a key five-wicket haul against Souths to wrap up a top two overall finish. Jarrod Turner hit 199 against Gold Coast, and amassed 680 runs at 52 for the season. Thanks also must go to Brian and Jan for their continued great efforts scoring, and also to Gail who scored when they were away. Thanks also to club coaches Jarrod Turner, Michael Brundle and Craig Philipson, who were tremendous at training and also on match days. Well done to the whole University of Queensland club for a hugely successful season once again. Drunk last night, drunk the night before... Cheers Michael Philipson Captain Scott Walter was ever so reliable, picking up 44 wickets for the year, as was Ben Jones, who only played half year due to injury, picking up 32 wickets. We are lucky enough to have experienced First Class cricketers at the Blues, with the likes of Chris Hartley, Nathan Reardon and Peter Forrest adding extra firepower when playing. On a final note, I would like to thank Craig and Jarrod for the efforts they have put in on and off the field for the past decade and a half. The experience and banter which the two bring to the team will be deeply missed; however, I have no doubt that the next crop of junior and senior cricketers coming up the ranks will have enough talent and attitude to make sure the Blues are successful for many years to come. 19 Second Grade report How do you reflect on a season that brought a T20 premiership, but lacked a four-day final? When talking about the mighty UQCC 2nd grade side, it is considered a disappointment. A season that promised so much saw failure just before the final hurdle to put an end to four years of dominance in 2nd Grade. However it wasn t all doom and gloom, as we walked away with T20 silverware. A changing of the guard saw the arrival of many new young guns into the 2nd Grade team that should put the side in good stead for the next few years. Jano Coetzee, Luke Broekman, Jordie Ryan, Dugie Hill, and most impressively Julian Chinn all debuted this season, and showed the skill and desire to play higher level cricket. Add into this the breakthrough season of Sandy Mackenzie, highlighted by an amazing 100 against the eventual flag winners, and the team proved they will continue to have a presence come finals time next Easter. Particularly impressive were the entire seasons from Tom Tuffley and Matt the Wasian Lacey. Both proved to be consistent performers and stood up when it most counted, with Wasian showing a masterclass in the T20 semi final, only to be out done by Tuffers in the final. Daniel Beatty and Andrew Harmer showed all season how vital they are to the team, with both taking Michelles on various occasions. Andrew made his First Grade debut as reward for a couple of years of consistent performances. Ben Davis when playing 2nd Grade showed his skill with the bat and ball, and is a big loss to the club. As mentioned, the season did see some silverware, with T20 victory at Allan Border field versus Redlands. They batted first on a glorious wicket, but a fantastic fightback led by Daniel Beatty saw us restrict them to 164, roughly par on that wicket and outfield. Matt Lacey and Sandy started positively as they had done all season, and we put on 50 in the first six overs. From here Tom Tuffley quickly took the game away from Redlands. He batted outstandingly to score an unbeaten 83 and prove to all who watched that at any other club he would be playing 1st Grade. What followed was a fantastic night at the club sponsor s establishment, with several more wins for the boys. We struggled in the one day format, not being able to transform out brilliant T20 form. We made its way out to Peter Burge Oval to take on Redlands for the two-day semi-final in what was a re-match of the T20 final. However, with Redlands finishing 2nd over us on 3rd at the end of the regular season, and rain predicted throughout the weekend, they took a slight advantage into the game only needing a draw to progress through to the Grand Final. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did intervene, and although the sun was out all day Saturday, the weekly rain had taken its toll on the field and play didn t begin until late in the day. We won the toss and, with limited overs available, elected to bowl. It was tough going on a dry and unforgiving pitch, but the bowlers toiled manfully to have Redlands 3 for about 100 at the end of day 1, with D Beatty, M Lacey and A Harmer all picking up a wicket each. On day 2, we knew that we had to get wickets fast in order to force a result. With not much life in the pitch for the seamers, the introduction of spinner Matt Lacey saw a change in fortune. With the score and the support of the pace attack bowling tight, Lacey tore through the middle order and ultimately finished off the tail to take away match figures of 6-65 off 29 overs, and to have Redlands all out for 188. This left us with an interesting run chase in only 64 overs, rain still a possibility, and a very slow outfield to contend with. The start was positive, and by the tea interval we had put on 78 for 2, with Tom Tuffley (32) and Sandy McKenzie (26) looking strong. However, after the break the tide turned, and three quick wickets left us reeling at Great fight was displayed by Brendan Logue and Cody Loopstra; however, Logue (24) was dismissed with the score on 134, and the tail followed soon after. Loopstra (39) was last man out with us falling 30 runs short on 158 all out. On a personal note, the team is such a pleasure to play with on and off the field, and our success can be directly contributed to our team spirit, and enjoyment for others success on and off the field. Good luck to all next season let s drive it in as a club and go one step further. We have started preseason on the right note and I have no doubt there will be much more silverware to come. 24 Third Grade (1) report saw 3s (1) put to the test early with strong competition shown across all clubs encountered. Although our team was shown to be very strong on paper, discipline was lacking, and let us down in the first few games (particularly in the bowling department starting a few games with 5 wides, Rowdy!). This was also evident in our batting displays, but a couple of individual efforts held us in good stead and got us through. Consistently throughout Shane Gregory, Jano Coetzee and Nathan Bain held the middle order together, and gave us a fighting chance throughout the season. Once we started to sort our lines and lengths out, the bowling attack also started to make some proper inroads into a few telling line ups, and there were some outstanding performances from Abernathy, Beath and Macca (who also bowled a few head hunters, connecting with a 50% strike rate). The boys continued to fight hard toward the end of the season, showing characteristic UQ spirit, and narrowly missing the chance to play in finals. The stage is set for 3s to finally stake a claim on the premiership in Kind regards Cody Loopstra (on behalf of Ben Walter) Third Grade (1) Captain RESULTS THIRD GRADE (1) ROUND SCORES RESULT 1 UNIVERSITY OF QLD def WESTS 110 & 2/27 WIN 2 WYNNUM 207 def UNIVERSITY OF QLD 166 & 1/70 LOSS 3 UNIVERSITY OF QLD 8/288 def REDLANDS 257 WIN 4 UNIVERSITY OF QLD 8/290 def GOLD COAST 184 WIN 5 UNIVERSITYOF QLD VS NORTHS WASHOUT NO RESULT 6 OD1 SANDGATE 179 def UNIVERSITY OF QLD 171 LOSS 7 OD2 UNIVERSITY OF QLD 9/221 def NORTHS 7/207 WIN 8 T20 1 SANDGATE 7/125 def UNIVERSITY OF QLD 8/122 LOSS 9 T20 2 UNIVERSITY OF QLD 9/147 def VALLEY 7/132 WIN 10 T20 3 SOUTHS (2) 6/167 def UNIVERSITY OF QLD 159 LOSS 11 T20 4 UNIVERSITY OF QLD 9/154 def WESTS 8/78 WIN 12 OD3 SOUTHS (2) 8/194 def UNIVERSITY OF QLD 9/193 LOSS 13 SOUTHS (1) 8/312 def UNIVERSITY OF QLD 166 & 3/134 LOSS 14 UNIVERSITY OF QLD 7/204 def TOOMBUL 111 WIN 15 UNIVERSITY (2) 60 & 9/145 def UNIVERSITY (1) 88 & 113 LOSS OUT 16 VALLEY 116 vs UNIVERSITY OF QLD 4/80 DRAW SEMI UNIVERSITY 117 vs TOOMBUL 9/72 DRAW University of Queensland Cricket Club 23

29 Fourth Grade report With a large core of the premiership winning 4th Grade (2) side of moving up to form 3rd Grade (2) the season, it was always going to be a stern test of University depth. The club and team stood up admirably finishing 4th, losing a rain-marred semi-final to eventual winners Wests. It was a strong season filled with pockets of batting and bowling brilliance, mixed with small clumps of maladroitness that cost the side the allimportant top two regular season finish. Despite being in the dreaded funnel (two teams above poaching and dropping from week to week), the side managed to keep somewhat of a core while filtering through 45+ players from start to finish. Albeit without the same Steven Horn, Danny Hancock (43 wickets at 9.4) style blindness, a big thanks must go to Keg and Cody for allowing a core of players to stay within the 4s side where possible, which really helped build team spirit. The big four with the ball for the season were Greg Walter, Brenton O Neil, Luke Miles and Dean Collings. Injury and higher honours took most of Greg s season away from 4s, but he still managed to contribute 13 wickets at Brenton had some quick damaging spells, the most statistically notable vs Sandgate, taking 8 wickets in a day to secure the team a semi-final spot and an outright victory. Luke Miles was a consistent force, and his reliable line and length efforts secured 15 wickets at 16.33, and were almost as valuable as his answers during question time. Dean was the stand-out player of the season for me. He stood up as a senior member of the side in all facets of the game, and was a great help alongside and in lieu of Brendan Cassels and Adrian Doyle on and off the field. He was the top wicket taker with 27 for 14.26, and turned games in our favour on several occasions, as well as contributing in one or two run chases with the bat. Brendan Cassels put in some useful spells, and took most of his wickets in one 27.3 over spell against Wynnum, taking 7 for 71. I am sorry everybody for letting him do that, not even as skipper last season did he bowl that many overs in a day I am truly sorry. Consistently inconsistent, our batting was not where it needed to be to support a season of solid bowling performances. The majority of losses came when we failed to chase down reasonable scores on good batting decks. The stand-out individual performances from the year were William Hickson, who scored 110* vs the Gold Coast, and David Tuffley, who hit a commanding 90* against Norths in a one day game. Alex Peterson, Ollie Amerena, Callum Mack and I managed some useful contributions with top scores of 67, 86*, 75 and 68*, but these efforts need to be larger and more consistent if we want to be a premiership force. Non-cricketing highlights include David Tuffley s video dummy spit, the cameo appearance of the metronome Jim Hansen, and quality whale noises for NOC, not to mention Callum Mack s postdinner injury effort that would be right in two weeks and took over two months to heal. The two game highlights not already mentioned that stand out to me are Alex Peterson hitting 50 and taking 4 wickets in a T20, and Pat Smith s combined six off our last ball, and run out from Toombul s last ball to secure a 1 run T20 victory. Fielding sessions were filled with a good level of mirth, certainly helped by the bulk snacks policy, allowing the team to keep up its salt levels. Overall, a good result by all the troops involved, bring on and the one-year era of Doyle. David Jenkins Captain 28 University of Queensland Cricket Club

32 Fifth Grade report The th Grade season was pleasingly characterised by a number of solid team performances. However, the annual loss of players up the grades around the Christmas/New Year break, and a tight two-day loss, cost us a semi-final position. For the second year running, 5th Grade finished in fifth position. The season started very impressively with three successive two-day wins. Dustin Harris debut 6 for 8, and tons to Cam Oliver and Ben Ballinger, were individual highlights through these early victories. The fourth two-day game resulted in a tight loss to Wests that would prove crucial for the rest of the season. University was 1 for 61 chasing 134 for victory, before being all out for 129. The squad managed two wins and one loss during one-day games, but fell behind the pack when only managing one win from four games in the T20 games leading into the Christmas break. A two day loss to ladder leader Souths (even with an impressive second innings showing), followed by a washout against Toombul (when all other games in the grade got on) proved costly. With 2 two-day games remaining, the squad required two wins to attempt to secure a semi-final berth. In what was effectively an elimination final, and led by an impressively composed century from English import Freddie Davies, University dispatched Sandgate-Redcliffe to keep our finals hopes alive. We went into the final game of the season against 8th placed Valleys confident of securing a win and a semi-final spot. However, we saved our worst performance of the season for this game. Some inconsistent bowling and a bit of luck saw Valleys post 189. Looking to see out the day, University batsmen lost focus and slumped to 6 for 23 at stumps. Fortunately or unfortunately, the second Saturday was washed out, and the resulting draw was not enough to qualify us for finals. While unlikely, it would have been nice for the last five bats to have had a swing at the target on the final day of the regular season. For the season, Shane Beu 34.55) and Cam Oliver 33.22) were most impressive with the bat. Dan Levan and Kartik Sharma are better players then their stats suggest. Myself 12.81) and Charles Slaughter 20.58) led the wicket taking in a season with a high turnover of players. Adam Chief Wigan toiled hard for little reward, but demonstrated ability in all aspects of the game. Sean Khanna and Nathan Imber give us plenty to work with in the pace department for next season. The season plan remains the same for future 5th Grade squads. We have to start strongly, minimise the damage as the club loses players around Christmas, and then finish strongly. We look forward to qualifying for finals in the coming season, as, if successful, I feel we will be very competitive. Thanks for a solid season boys. Thanks also to Jarrod Turner and Tom Tuffley for their support in what was another immensely enjoyable season representing the University of Queensland Cricket Club. Cheers Mick Gallen Captain University of Queensland Cricket Club 31

35 Sixth Grade (1) report Well this season turned out to be a hard slog for Uni 6(1), with only a few victories near the end of the season (hopefully indicating next season might be a better year for us). We struggled most of the year to put together solid batting partnerships, which really hampered our efforts to stay competitive in our matches. Matt Graham was one player who was consistently able to score runs for us when he was playing, helping us in many games to get some semblance of a total to defend and give us a fighting chance. The one thing our boys were able to do, game in and game out this year, was a consistent fielding performance, which helped support our bowlers, who put in 110% to really make an impact in the game. Brucy (Henry Bruce) and Biggsy (Nic Biggs) were superb throughout the year in the bowling, consistently hampering the opposition batsmen and taking wickets in the majority of games they played. Brucy ended up taking a best of 5/27 against Wynumm in only the second game into the season, and continued to be an essential part of our bowling attack up until the Christmas break. Although our season was not one to remember as being our finest, I think next year is looking better, with the side coming together more near the end of this season to put together some good performances. With young players stepping up like Bruce and Biggs, supported by Matt, hopefully Uni 6(1) is able to have a real go at taking out the competition next year! 38 Sixth Grade (2) report After two seasons of being the power behind the throne, I decided to take up the reigns of full time captaincy and throw myself at the mercy of 6th Grade (2) cricket. Moulding a team to suit the needs of a 6th Grade season is simple you need good blokes, dirty hacks, scrappy battlers, young blokes just out of junior cricket and the occasional fill in (women s cricket and girlfriend s brothers are a good hunting ground). So round one rolled up and I realised this may be harder than it looks thrashed outright in a day and an hour helps if you have more than 9 bats on the second day. Things certainly brightened up though winning the next five games, including an outright against Souths and a 2 run win against Wests. Despite somehow losing a T20 game against Redlands (how can you not defend 174?), we cruised into the Christmas break on top of the table. After Christmas things got shaky. Losing Tommy Volling to a trip to the States hurt, and we lost our way bowling-wise, which hurt us badly. Despite a heroic ton by Junior Hickson which got us up over Toombul, we lost the two-day version of the Derby, continued our patchy form against Valleys teams, and got washed out second week against Norths when we had them on the ropes. This left ol Uni (2) in third place with an away semi against Kempnich s Valleys team. Despite having only 11 to pick from (and having to beg two of them to play) we entered the semi with some hope then it rained for two freaking days. A fantastic season all round by the boys, despite our semi final exit. Being in the same team with some of these guys for a second, and in some cases third, season has turned us into a good team unit. From a batting perspective, Nick Meadows showed better consistency (and having a good bloke award named after him too), Alex Hickson was a match winner, we unearthed a new talent in Tom Crook, both Josh and Tom Volling played crucial knocks throughout the season, and Jono McTaggett and James Klaassen hit the ball a very long way. Klaassen s 104* in a T20 game (batting at 6) had to be seen to be believed. Bowling was our strong suit, but we bowled poorly at times which cost us. The Bam came back and bowled well at times (kid loves a no ball), Matt Long became a much better bowler, McTaggett and Klaassen both won us games with the ball, while I trundled away at one end; fewer overs than previous seasons, but just as irritatingly slow. Special thanks go out to everyone who played for Uni (2), especially those who filled in (and won us games with the ball, like Lynda and Roey Milne did!) Also a big thanks to Mick Gallen as always, the other skippers, JT for his coaching prowess, and those good Pommy blokes who added great chat to an already high chat factor. Season prognosis most fun I ve had playing cricket in years. Catch you all Round One! Matt Adams Captain University of Queensland Cricket Club 37

43 Women s Second Grade report The season for UQCC women s Second Grade was, to a certain extent, an opportunity for restructuring and redevelopment. With the departure of several seasoned players and an influx of a host of new and relatively inexperienced cricketers, the focus certainly fell on player development and enjoying the game more than anything else. In short, the aim of the season was to give everyone a go and fill the numbers on the field in light of many players being called up to First Grade. A large portion of responsibility fell to the experienced players, particularly Roxy as our most consistent bowler, as well as Amanda and Fi in the batting department. At the conclusion of the season, Roxy received our bowling award, with outstanding figures, including taking 4/12 against Western Suburbs. Jaime finished the season with the batting award, notching up 209 runs with a high score of 55. Attaining this score occurred at the same time as a new first-wicket partnership record of 116 with Lucy Shipp. On the whole, the women s Second Grade season was, by its own definition, a success. The women that participated developed their skills, enjoyed their cricket, and a foundation was set for the season. As the returning captain, I look forward to the challenges ahead next season and to re-establishing University Second Grade as a dominant team in the competition. 46 Lord s Taverners report The Lord s Taverners experienced an enjoyable and successful season in A young and inexperienced side entered the Lord s Taverners competition and, not surprisingly, started slowly as the boys came to terms with the longer form of the game. We lost our first two games against the more mature Norths and Valleys sides, but learnt some valuable lessons about occupying the batting crease and maintaining concentration throughout the afternoon sessions. We then recorded a comprehensive first innings win against Toombul and, after an exciting run chase, an outright win against Sandgate-Redcliffe. We then travelled north to play the Sunshine Coast in a one-day game. After posting a competitive score, and having taken early wickets, a tropical storm hit that not only blew away the covers but any hope we had of winning. Our final game was a play off against the Gold Coast for 3rd and 4th position. The Gold Coast side proved far too strong, winning the game on first innings. Most pleasing for our assistant coach David Biggs and myself was the maturing of the playing group and individuals throughout the season, and the obvious enjoyment they received in playing the great game of cricket. The season was littered with outstanding team and individual performances. Our captain James Grady was the outstanding batsman with and voted most valuable player by his peers. Daniel Cranitch (our vice captain) with and Jack Clayton with 9 15 formed a wonderful bowling partnership that set up our wins against Toombul and Sandgate- Redcliffe. Max McDonald developed into a consistent opening batsman with , and Patrick Robinson, Joe Singer and Vincent Foo all performed roles with the bat. 48 Juniors report The University of Queensland Cricket Club completed its third season in the Metro South West Junior Cricket Competition. Once again we continued to expand all of the In2Cricket, preand post-xmas season programs, which this year involved over 200 participants. This is a great result for the club, and I m sure the senior club will benefit with a lot of strong results in the future. The In2Cricket program was held on a Friday evening under lights, and ran for five weeks before the Christmas break and four weeks after. Over 30 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 10 were involved, and it will be great to see these players put on their whites for the first time over the next couple of years in their first structured game of cricket. The junior pre-xmas season saw the following teams entered into the local competition: 4 x Super 8 2 x Under 10 2 x Under 11 3 x Under 12 1 x Under 13 2 x Under 14 1 x Under 15 2 x Under 16 1 x Under 17. For the post-xmas season, the following teams were involved in the same competition: 4 x Super 8 2 x Under 10 1 x Under 11. Our major focus for the junior program is for all players to thoroughly enjoy their cricket and continue to develop their skills, and to keep them all engaged with the game by providing a pathway for all players to progress to senior cricket and beyond, should that be their goal. Along the way, we had some fantastic team results, including a group that won their respective divisions over the season. Congratulations must go to: U11 Blue Pre-xmas U14 Blue Pre-xmas U14 White Pre-xmas U15 Blue Pre-xmas. Overall, the junior club had a very successful season. A big thank you must go to all coaches, managers, scorers, umpires, committee members, parents and, most importantly, the players. Without all of your support, the season would not have been such a success. In particular I would like to thank John Longworth for his commitment to the club in helping drive it forward. Your work has really helped set a great platform for the UQCC junior club to build on in the future. Thank you once again. We look forward to a bigger and better , and see you all in July for another strong preseason. Jarrod Turner Club Coach As the majority of boys play cricket for their respective schools after Christmas, our numbers are a lot higher in the first part of the season. The teams played their matches on turf wickets at the University, as well as local school and council grounds in the region. All teams bonded really well and developed their games on a team and individual level. University of Queensland Cricket Club 47

49 Old Boys report A most unsatisfying season for the Old Boys where we were due to play eight matches for the year, but only completed three due to weather intervention. Out of these three games, we had one victory in the Baz Mullins Cup vs. East Redlands, and two losses against Wynnum and the Downs Club. The usual array of injuries prevented us from fielding our strongest side, but given our results over the last few years, we will be looking to rectify this record in the coming season. A highly anticipated Southern Tour to Sydney resulted in very successful golfing, punting and catching up with old friends, but unfortunately not a ball bowled due to weather. Thanks to Bomber for agreeing to organise the coming season s tour, and we look forward to the much anticipated Michael Bowers announcement of destination and dates. Welcome back to a number of old faces during the year, including Ledger, Remedios, Partridge, Gray, Clayton, and cameos from Shackel, Garde and Hankinson on the Southern Tour. My leads assure me that 2014 will result in the Herring brothers gracing the field simultaneously, and a return to the crease for Yeti Keating and Jim Hansen. Bruce Abernathy made a brief appearance a year ago and has disappeared into the ether, ditto Buttrum/ Bragg/Moore, and hopes remain for a Beetle, Barney, Horse and Humphry s revival? While Buchanan, McNeil and Toye are on international duties, rumour has it that Traves, Grogan and Rubb are also contemplating returns to the fold. Always looking for fresh legs, so please feel free to drop me an announcing availability. Statistics for the year are not available at the moment (as Greigy is having a European vacation), but season highlights include: Shirley s red ink 50 against Wynnum, afternoon tea at said match, Michael Bowers 49, Brad Peters 3/34 and Cymbal s torn hamstring vs. East Redlands, and Holty, Shirls and Pink for their win at the Australian Golf Club. Look forward to the coming season and some good cricketing weather. Ian Elks 48 University of Queensland Cricket Club

50 Legends reports Unlike years past, Uni was not blessed with a plethora of Sunday Legends players this season. Therefore our two teams posted last year was whittled down to just one. Unfortunately, many players had other commitments or simply moved out of town. This being said, the Sunday Legends were able to scrape together a team for two games this season, with the others being forfeited. Our first game against Souths was not one that the Legends would want to remember, being bowled out for just 58. With a brave face the Uni bowlers made Souths work for their runs until they finally reached their target in the 14 over. Our second game against Sandgate was a good contest. With a few debutants to the team in the likes of Steven Farrell and Lachy Stevens, the Uni side was assured of victory. A much more accomplished batting performance saw Uni make 136. This proved hard to chase for the Gaters, who fell 6 runs short. So the Sunday Legends ended the season with the stats of played 2, won 1, lost 1. Thanks to all the Legends players who gave up their precious Sunday mornings for a game with their mates. Hopefully next season the side can roll out some victories and maybe grab the trophy back.
