2 Practice Course Pre-requisites When can you start the practice courses? Students must successfully complete the Academic Writing Requirement (AWR) & N345 before requesting to start N350/351, N430/431 & N495

3 Practice Course Pre-requisite N345 Family Nursing 3.0u The purpose of this course is to build on existing knowledge of registered nurses to develop an understanding of healthpromoting family nursing. Four major domains are explored theoretically and experientially: health, family, relational nursing practice and ethics.

4 Practice Courses and Writing skills AWR or Academic Writing is a UVic requirement Beyond the basic AWR, Nurses can take this opportunity to learn to write better and in a more scholarly fashion: The practice courses require good writing skills & the ability to show how to integrate theory to practice

5 Practice Course Planning Minimum Academic requirement in Nursing: C Failing any course affects the cumulative GPA Are you thinking of going on to do a Masters Degree? GPA matters! Failing a practice course is serious and requires that a student request to repeat the course the request is taken to the progression committee in the School of Nursing for consideration. A learning contract and special conditions may be stipulated if a student is permitted to repeat a practice course.

6 Practice Course Planning Set yourself up for Success! Plan to take only the number of units per term that you can handle with the rest of your demands: work, family, recreation If you are a fairly recent grad from an RN program, or if it has been a while since you have done any formal studies, consider completing ALL the core courses and the maximum number of nursing electives PRIOR to engaging in the practice courses. The Nursing Electives are not offered as often as the core courses and can be taken any time in the program, so plan early which ones you really want to take

7 Practice Course Planning Should I take nursing electives concurrently with the practice courses? Consider: Think of an average day and what you accomplish. Add a 3 rd or 4 th year on-line university course and for each 1.5unit course, 8-10 hrs. per week are recommended in reading, researching, on-line learning activities, writing papers, etc. The more courses completed prior to starting the practice courses, the more these will contribute to the knowledge that can be applied in the practice courses

10 Placement Request Types Option 1: Practice in an agency different from your place of work. [A placement can be used to test the water for a completely new area for a possible career change after the BSN] o o Option 2: Practice in your place of work outside of your paid work hours. [The most common] Option 3: Practice in your place of work during your paid work hours. [Available to students who have the possibility of participating in projects or initiatives in their work place usually Managers etc.]

12 Placement Affiliation Agreement Affiliation Agreement This is a legal agreement created between the University of Victoria and the receiving agency where the student is going to undertake their placement Students may be asked to provide additional information related to the affiliation agreement requirements for their placement request Students have obligations to fulfill prior to starting placements and are responsible for meeting the requirements as specified by their agency or health authority (on-line orientation, immunizations, etc.) NOTE: The student placement requirements apply to the Post RN BSN students even if they are doing their placement at their place of work

14 Student Profile for placement requests Option 1 or 2 A one pager summarizing your academic and professional background, why you would like to do the placement in this place/unit and what you think you can or would learn [look at the course information] More is better: please type & use complete sentences and do a spelling check before submitting as this will be sent to your prospective placement. as a word doc Don t be afraid to put some color in the student profile - remember you are competing for student placement positions

15 Placement Request - Documentation A word of CAUTION: The Practice Placement Authorization form is a not the final placement authorization requests are still submitted through the formal HSPnet in most cases. Even if the Practice Placement Authorization form is initially completed with signatures for all three practice courses, each experience is evaluated and changes may be required
