1 THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF BEIRUT FACULTY OF MEDICINE The Salim El-Hoss Bioethics and Professionalism Program
2 The Salim El-Hoss Bioethics and Professionalism Program (SHBPP) at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine (AUBFM) is an interdisciplinary resource for faculty, students, and health care providers who are involved in bioethics education, research, and consultation in Lebanon and the region. Launched in April 2010, it is the first targeted initiative in the Arab world that seeks to educate people, conduct research, and champion issues related to professionalism, medical humanism and bioethics. More specifically, the SHBPP aims to foster relevant scholarly work and increase public awareness and understanding of contemporary issues related to bioethics and professionalism. It promotes and encourages the development of the requisite skills, attitudes, and behaviors among those who practice medicine on issues such as end of life care, stem cell research, medical economics, health administration, law and policy, ethics and research. 1

4 3 Our Activities Workshops and Conferences The SHBPP organizes local, national and regional workshops and conferences on themes related to bioethics. Participants are professionals from all over the country and the region. Examples of national conferences are: Ethical Issues in Surgery, Organ Donation, Procurement and Transplantation: Ethical Challenges and Future Directions, Nursing and Healthcare Ethics: Making a Difference for Patients, and Clinical Ethics: Ethics Consultation and Patient Care. Held on the occasion of the Global Medical Ethics Day, regional conferences have covered a variety of themes including Teaching Medical Ethics in Lebanese Medical Schools, Biomedical Ethics in Medical Schools, Controversies in Research Ethics: Research Integrity, Research Ethics Committees and International Clinical Trials and Stem Cell Research: Current Controversies.
5 4 Ethics Matters Lecture Series The Ethics Matters Lecture Series is an initiative that aims to: Raise the general awareness of the importance and relevance of ethical issues in health care within the AUB community and the Faculty of Medicine and the Medical Center in particular, and professionals in the region in general. Provide opportunities to stay abreast of new developments in bioethics. Develop the educational program in bioethics at the Faculty of Medicine. The activities envisioned for this initiative include public lectures, newsletters, national and regional workshops, and community education sessions, among others.
6 5 Humanism and Professionalism Award Launched in 2011, the prestigious AUB Faculty of Medicine Physician/Resident Humanism and Professionalism Award recognizes compassionate care and selfless dedication to excellence in physicians/residents. Doing Ethics We offer educational activities at the medical school. Bioethics is part of our medical students educational program. White Coat Ceremony We have moved from having our students entering clinical years wearing long white coats to being cloaked in short white coats, indicating their status of students.

8 7 Humanism Fund The Humanism Fund is an initiative of the Salim El-Hoss Bioethics and Professionalism Program and students of medicine at the AUBFM. The Fund is dedicated to helping needy patients who cannot afford to pay for their treatment at AUBMC. It aims to help less fortunate people get the medical care they need. Our Achievements First Arab Bioethics Electronic Network The SHBPP launched the first Arab Bioethics Electronic Network by starting a bioethics listserv that links professionals from different countries of the Arab world. First Arab Bioethics Association The SHBPP is working on the establishment of the first Arab Bioethics Association. Several regional meetings have taken place with experts for that purpose. The Arab Bioethics Association will unite regional experts who are interested in bioethics, and will promote bioethics in the Arab world. Coming Soon The First Bioethics Certificate Program The SHBPP will soon launch the first Bioethics Certificate Program tailored for students and professionals in the Region.
