2 St Gemma s Therapy Team The therapy team at St Gemma s Hospice work with the wider multidisciplinary team to provide compassionate and skilled specialist palliative patient care of the highest quality. Therapists have an active role in supporting and educating patients and their family and/or carers in order to promote life and enhance its quality. This may involve planning your discharge to your preferred location. Where do the therapists work? In-Patient Unit What therapy services are available? Occupational Therapy Occupational Therapists assist patients whose ability to cope with activities of daily living (self-care, work or leisure) have been impaired due to physical, psychological (anxiety) or cognitive (memory or understanding) problems. Wheelchair Assessment Occupational Therapy aims to help you and the significant people in your life to: Out-Patient clinics Community Visits Day Hospice Adapt to changes in ability and lifestyle through engagement with activities of purpose and meaning. Develop or enhance coping skills through the use of strategies such as anxiety management, fatigue management and other techniques to help adjust to reduced ability. Ensure your home environment is suitable for your needs by providing Home Assessments and Equipment as required Participate in activities which are meaningful and rewarding to you. Promote a sense of emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing which may address potential Energy conservation for social isolation by engaging with the kitchen local community and support networks Our Occupational Therapists are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council.
3 Physiotherapy Complementary Therapy Physiotherapists offer rehabilitation to improve or maintain independence, promote quality of life and aid symptom control to aid function for patients. Complementary Therapy can help by the use of aromatherapy products and/ or treatments for: Physiotherapy aims to: Promote comfort & safety Influence pain control Maintain optimum respiratory & circulatory function Assess function, mobility & movement Provide appropriate exercise & activity plans Provide appropriate mobility aids Our Physiotherapists are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council. Walking practice Anxiety Fatigue/Lethargy Breathlessness Skin problems Pain Complementary Therapy can provide emotional support by the following therapies: Exercise bike Reflexology Aromatherapy Massage Reiki Hypnotherapy Our Complementary Therapists are fully qualified and insured by their regulatory bodies. Patient education Reflexology Aromatherapy products
4 Dietetics Dietitians help patients to manage issues and symptoms related to eating and drinking. The most common reasons for referral to a dietitian are: Poor appetite Weight loss Nausea Taste changes Difficulty swallowing Bowel problems Tube feeding Food allergies or intolerance Diabetes Our Dietitians are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council. Creative Arts/Creative Therapy The Creative Arts Service is based in a well-equipped art room in Day Services and provides Creative Therapy for patients facilitated by our Creative Arts Worker and Art Volunteers. The creative activities are tailored to patients individual aims, interests and abilities wherever possible and aim to: - Provide a wide range of art, craft and media activities Promote active, creative expression Increase confidence, enjoyment and self-esteem Patients may also work on wider group projects. Some projects may involve collaboration with other therapy services available. The Art Room welcomes all whatever your experience, interests and abilities may be.
