HESI EXAM INFORMATION In developing our exams, all test items have been written by subject matter experts, such as Medical Assisting educators and clinicians. Questions are written according to a critical thinking model, and then reviewed by an expert panel for style, consistency, readability, bias, reliability, and validity. Before a question is approved for inclusion in the HESI Medical Assisting Exit Exam, it is piloted as a non-scored test item using a nationwide sample of medical assisting students. This is to ensure our tests are reliable, valid, and reflective of the medical assisting students who are graduating and preparing for success on their certification examination. Because we follow this stringent test development review process, you can be sure that each test will accurately measure students knowledge and critical thinking ability. HESI Testing & Remediation draws upon 20 years of research on test development. In fact, our research has been published in many prestigious, peer-reviewed journals.
HESI EXAM INFORMATION A rigorous, scientific process. Proven accuracy. Our research passes the tests. TEST QUESTION DEVELOPMENT Prepare students for graduation and beyond with the HESI Medical Assisting Exit Exam. The institutional student aggregate report is prepared for every school that administers our exams, providing helpful information for curriculum evaluation. Institutional diagnostic reports include an item-by-item topic comparison between your group s percentage answered correctly and the national group norm answered correctly. Tracking reports allow you to monitor each student s remediation activities, so you can take a more active role during the valuable study time before the licensure exam. Personalized remediation is provided for test items that were answered incorrectly, so a student knows exactly what areas need improvement and where to access the material to study. Personalized remediation is included at no additional cost with or without a textbook adoption. 27 Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 6237, (ESSB 6237) chapter 153, laws of 2012, created the medical assistant profession. This law has been codified as Chapter RCW. We'll transition from the health care assistant profession to the medical assistant profession. The new profession consists of 4 new categories Medical Assistant Certified Medical Assistant Registered Medical Assistant Phlebotomist Medical Assistant Hemodialysis Technician
What is the effective date of the new medical assistant profession? July 1, Do I need a healthcare credential from the Department of Health? If you are practicing medicine, or assisting in the practice of medicine, you must have a healthcare credential issued by the Washington State Department of Health. There are many types of licenses that grant different scopes of practice and require different levels of education. Chapter RCW requires people in healthcare facilities, who act as medical assistants, to have a credential. Practicing as a medical assistant includes many duties identified in RCW Examples include administering single dose vaccines and intravenous injections, assisting in certain medical procedures and withdrawing blood.

the following health care practitioners are authorized to delegate to, and supervise, a medical assistant: a physician or an osteopathic physician; a podiatric physician and surgeon; a registered nurse; an advanced registered nurse practitioner; a naturopath; an optometrist; a physician assistant; an osteopathic physician assistant.
MA-C is a portable credential (registration) MA-R is limited to the attestation MD or facility. Must register with each new employer. Current HCA registration who are in HCA categories of C, D, E, or F will automatically grandfather into the MA-C
DOH Website ertificates/professionsnewreneworupdate/m edicalassistant/applicationsandforms.aspx
Frequently Asked Questions from the DOH Website I work in a healthcare facility and am called a medical assistant but I don t have any type of credential from the Department of Health. Will I automatically become a medical assistant? No. If you do not have an active health care assistant credential before July 1, 2013, but are completing duties outlined in RCW , you must meet the minimum requirements currently being set in rule to apply for and receive a medical assistant credential.
How do I obtain a medical assistant-certified credential? Complete the required medical assistant training that will be identified in rule. Pass an examination approved by the secretary. Applicants may receive an interim certification if they have met all of the qualifications required for certification except for passage of the examination. The interim permit will expire upon passage of the examination or after one year whichever occurs first, and is not renewable. Complete a Department of Health application and pay a fee. Medical assistant applications will be available June 1, Any additional requirements may be added in rule.
How do I obtain a medical assistantregistered credential? Registration is an endorsement by a healthcare practitioner, clinic or group practice. You must file an attestation of the endorsement with the Department of Health. Complete a Department of Health application, submit the attestation of endorsement and pay a fee. Medical assistant applications will be available June 1, 2013.
Will my health care assistant credential transition to a new medical assistant category when it's due for renewal or on July 1, 2013? Active health care assistant credentials that are in good standing on June 30, 2013, will transition to a new category of medical assistant on July 1, Even if you don't receive your new medical assistant credential in the mail on July 1, 2013, as long as you are listed as having an active credential on the department s Provider Credential Search, you may legally practice as a medical assistant.
Will the expiration date change for my new medical assistant credential? Yes, medical assistant credentials will expire on the credential holder s birthday. Pursuant to WAC , if the initial credential is issued within 90 days of the practitioner's birthday, then the credential does not expire until the following birthday. For example, a health care assistant with a birthday of August 6, whose credential converts to a medical assistant on July 1, 2013, would not have to renew that credential until August 6, However, if the same health care assistant s birthday fell on November 15, he or she would have to renew by November 15, 2013.
What duties can a medical assistant-certified perform? See RCW (1). What duties can a medical assistanthemodialysis perform? See RCW (2). What duties can a medical assistantphlebotomist perform? See RCW (3). What duties can a medical assistantregistered perform? See RCW (4).

Medical Assistants, New Chapter WAC Changes other than editing made to the proposed rules for the rules as adopted Rule as proposed in WSR WAC (3)(f) Delegation and Supervision (3) A medical assistant may only accept delegated tasks when: (f) The task, if performed improperly likely would not present life-threatening consequences or the danger of immediate and serious harm to the patient. WAC (1)(b) Medical assistant-certified Training and examination (1) Successful completion of one of the following medical assistant training programs: (b) Postsecondary school or college accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization approved through the U.S. Department of Education, which includes a minimum of seven hundred twenty clock hours of training in medical assisting skills, including a clinical externship of no less than one hundred sixty hours; WAC (2) Medical assistant-certified Training and examination. Certification requirements Applicants for a medical assistant-certified credential must meet the following requirements: (2) Pass one of the following examinations within three years prior to submission of an initial application for this credential: Page 1 Rule as adopted WAC (3)(f) Delegation and Supervision (3) A medical assistant may only accept delegated tasks when: f) The task, if performed improperly by: (i) A medical assistant-certified, medical assistant-registered, or a medical assistant-phlebotomist would likely not present life-threatening consequences or the danger of immediate and serious harm to the patient. (ii) A medical assistanthemodialysis technician is not likely to present life-threatening consequences or the danger of immediate and serious harm to the patient. WAC (1)(b) Medical assistant-certified Training and examination (1) Successful completion of one of the following medical assistant training programs: (b) Postsecondary school or college accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, which includes a minimum of seven hundred twenty clock hours of training in medical assisting skills, including a clinical externship of no less than one hundred sixty hours; WAC (2) Medical assistant-certified Training and examination Certification requirements Applicants for a medical assistant-certified credential must meet the following requirements: (2) Pass one of the following examinations within five years prior to submission of an initial application for this credential: Reason The change makes the rule consistent with changes to RCW made by Engrossed House Bill 1515 (2013). Commenters noted that the subsection as proposed was not consistent with the bill. The change clarifies that the U.S. Department of Education recognizes accrediting agencies, but does not approve them. Setting a limit for when applicants may take an examination prior to application helps assure that the applicant is tested on the most current training standards. Changing the period that a medical assistant-certified applicant may take one of the available examination options from three to five years
Medical Assistants, New Chapter WAC Changes other than editing made to the proposed rules for the rules as adopted Rule as proposed in WSR WAC (1)(d) Medical assistant-certified -Application -Interim certification. The change will mean fewer applicants who have national MA certification will need to pay for the cost of retaking an exam prior to application, addressing concerns raised by some commenters. The change in subsection (1)(d) makes it consistent with the change in WAC (2), which pertains to the time limit for taking an examination. (See the row above.) The change in subsection (3) helps clarify what routes are prohibited as well as what medication administration routes are permitted in subsection (5) for a medical assistantcertified. This addresses a concern raised by some commenters. Commenters noted that in the table in subsection (5) the row for Other legend drugs: Intravenous injections was missing the word peripheral consistent with other rows in this table. The asterisked wording after the table also
