1 Apps, apps and more apps: an annotated list of free and low-cost ipad apps for attorneys and paralegals By Cheryl Niemeier An article posted in the online magazine Fumsi ponders: Mobile is everywhere you look, but how big is it, really? 1 Then goes on to reference a Business Insider chart that shows mobile has a deeper penetration than electricity or water. 2 Isn t it astonishing and sad that mobile access is more prevalent in the world than basic necessities like safe drinking water and electricity?! The moral implications of this fact aside, what does this mean for attorneys and paralegals? It means the legal industry is mobile, too! And I don t mean on the go I mean online! There is little doubt that if this was a live presentation rather than an article and attendees were asked by a show of hands if they either own or know someone who owns a tablet or e-reader most would raise their hands! In fact, the most recent Pew Research Center s Internet & American Life Project report revealed a 19-percent ownership of either a tablet or e-reader prior to the 2011 holiday season and a January 2012 post-holiday ownership of 29 percent. 3 That s a nearly 53-percent increase in e-reader ownership in an incredibly short period of time! Tablets offer several advantages. They are portable, lightweight, have a relatively long battery life, power up very quickly, and cost less than a laptop. Add to that the fact that tablets the ipad in particular can do just about everything a lawyer needs might have you asking, Should I buy one? Among tablets the most popular one for attorneys is the ipad, and it has the highest number of legal apps available for download. An oft-heard phrase nowadays is there s an app for that. And certainly, if there isn t, one is likely in development. Estimates are there s 1 million apps on the market with the Apple App Store reporting it has now reached 25 billion downloads, tracking at 1 billion downloads a month. Current estimates revealed that the Android app market was expected to have the same number of apps as Apple (680,000) last spring. 4 That s more than 1.3 million apps combined with legal-related apps a burgeoning subset of that total. And while these apps targeting the legal profession are primarily free, some may carry a seemingly high cost, but will likely be well worth the price. There s a plethora of legal apps available from the itunes App Store, and they can be utilized for legal research, locating court rules, storing and sharing files, reading and annotating documents, selecting jurors, organizing exhibits for trial presentations and much more. The following apps are available for the ipad as well as other devices, and the majority of them are easy to find via the itunes site. However, you must create a free itunes account, which requires payment information in the event there is a charge. LEGAL RESEARCH APPS ABA Journal (free) Get access to breaking legal news and in-depth monthly articles as reported by the United States most respected legal journal. Black s Law Dictionary ($54.99) This 9th edition of the standard legal dictionary gives you access to more than 45,000 legal terms and alternate spellings or equivalent expressions for more than 5,300 terms. Not sure how to pronounce the term? This app also offers audio pronunciations for more than 7,000 legal terms. CCH IntelliConnect Mobile (free) This app is available to IntelliConnect subscribers for use on the ipad and other mobile devices, with content including several Aspen treatise titles and IntelliConnect s Smart Charts in areas such as corporate governance, federal banking, financial reform and secured transactions. Although the app is free, a subscription is required to access content. Congressional Record (free) Gives you access to the daily edition of the Congressional Record and permits browsing of editions back to Jan. 4, 1995, keyword searching, ing and saving documents to your preferred PDF ipad reader. Constitution (free) The entire United States Constitution on your ipad! Declaration of Independence (free) A reference copy of the Declaration of Independence on your ipad with text, notes and images of original documents. e-delaware (free) This app, which was developed by Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP, gives users access to Delaware corporate and alternative entity statutes, Article 8 and Article 9 of the UCC as well as Delaware Court of Chancery and Supreme Court of Delaware case law summaries. Given that Delaware is often a chosen state for entities to incorporate, this app is a welcome addition to the market. Fastcase (free) A next-generation, Webbased legal research service that provides access to U.S. cases and statutes. (continued on page 32) TECHNOLOGY Cheryl L. Boolean operators and proximity connectors may be used in constructing search statements. This is an especially great app for searching most state statutes. HeinOnline (free) View PDF copies of content in the HeinOnline library. You can access content by citation, browsing or use full-text searching techniques. HeinOnline is a subscription service providing access to archival federal registers, law review articles, ABA Journal titles and much more. Although the app is free, a subscription is required to access content. ilawlibrary ($1.99) Access the Federal Rules on your ipad. Federal Rules of Civil, Criminal, Bankruptcy and Appellate Procedure and Evidence are available with no network connection required. Features include searching, viewing hierarchically or rule by rule, and bookmarking. LawStack (free) A complete legal library in your briefcase! It comes preloaded with the U.S. Constitution plus the same Federal Rules as the ilawlibrary app above with options to add U.S. Code, Code of Federal Regulations and multiple state statutes. Legal Edge (free) A legal news app developed by JDSupra that helps users stay informed about current legal developments with updates, news alerts and case filings from various legal professionals in the United States. Subject areas covered include, among others, real estate, banking and finance, immigration, insurance, consumer protection, taxes, bankruptcy, intellectual property, health law, labor and employment, and legal marketing. Lexis Advance (free) The app is free, but a subscription is required to access the content. Once downloaded and logged in, you have access to all primary and secondary legal research content from Lexis. Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (free) Fast and easy browsing and searching of the MPEP. Patent attorneys should leave the heavy book behind and download this app! OpenRegs (free) This app gives you access to regulations published in the Federal Register and lets you track significant and economically significant regulations published in the Register, locate recently issued notices of final and proposed rule-making, and browse regulations by agency and soon-to-close or recently opened comment periods. FedCtRecords ($9.99) Developed by a UCLA law school graduate, this app gives you access to United States circuit and district court dockets. Patent Portal (free) Another must for patent practitioners, use it to retrieve patents and patent applications from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Search by title, date, application number and more; view documents as searchable text and add notes to them; and document sets to others with your notes intact. PUSH Legal (free) A unique app that like ilawlibrary and LawStack provides access to the Federal Rules and also Federal Bankruptcy Code, Federal Sentencing Guidelines Manual, Federal Search & Seizure Manual, Delaware General Corporation Law, but goes beyond that with access to various select codes from other states as well as case law annotations for the statutes. Real Time Congress (free) This app provides live updates from the current U.S. House and Senate legislative sessions. It delivers updates, schedules and key policy documents to your device the moment they are released by Congress and the White House. RuleBook (free) A musthave for litigators! And no more checking pocket parts! Access all federal and many state court rules on one app, which are kept current through regular updates. Download once and no need for an Internet connection to access them anytime. However, as more rules are added and updated, you will need to update the app from time to time. State Statutes (prices vary) There is not an app for Indiana statutes, but itunes does have apps for many states such as California, Oklahoma and Texas to name a few. Quickest way to find them is a search of the state name at the App Store website. 32 RES GESTÆ SEPTEMBER 2012

3 U.S. Code (free) Gives you access to the entire U.S. Code for browsing and searching or use legal citations to find the sections you seek. Scrolling through chapters of the statutes is permitted as is bookmarking and ing sections to yourself and others. No network connection needed once the app is downloaded. WestlawNext (free) Although the app is free, a subscription is required to access content. Once downloaded and logged in you have access to all primary and secondary legal research as well as news content from Westlaw. Wolfram Lawyer s Professional Assistant ($4.99) A legal reference tool that provides access to a dictionary of legal terms, statutes of limitation for each state in the U.S., a tool for calendar calculations, a variety of calculators, and crime rate and demographic data. The app is powered by the Wolfram Alpha computational knowledge engine. LITIGATION & TRIAL APPS Deponent App ($9.99) Use this app to create an outline for your deposition questions and exhibits. Allows you to select from more than 150 categorized questions or create your own questions, and organize and link them to corresponding exhibits. DocketLaw (free) Don t miss your court and filing deadlines! A great app for small-firm and solo attorneys, DocketLaw lets you calculate court deadlines based on jurisdiction-specific rules. The app is able to perform calculations based on the rules of more than 300 federal and state courts. A full-state subscription, covering state and federal courts, costs from $19.95 to $49.95 a month, depending on the state and the number of courts within it. Or you can subscribe to a single court for $9.95 a month and add additional courts for $4.95 each. Exhibit A ($9.99) An excellent app to assist you in making your presentations come alive in the courtroom, boardroom or classroom. ijury ($14.99) and ijuror ($9.99) Two very similar apps to assist you in selecting a jury for your case. Use them to quickly take notes on jurors and store them in order to add notes later as the case progresses. JuryDuty ($29.99) A step-up from ijury and ijuror in both price and features, JuryDuty lets you track each potential juror with the use of customized seating charts that easily tie each juror to their seat locations by name, specific notes and your thoughts about each juror. Once you ve closed the juror s profile, the color changes from white to blue, allowing you to quickly track which jurors you ve already questioned. KeyNote ($9.99) Similar to Exhibit A, this app created by an attorney lets you create presentations that shine. The app includes many features, such as predefined or customized text styles and slides, animated charts and a wide choice of unique transitions for your slides. Also, it offers the ability to present directly on your ipad or use video mirroring to display your presentation in the courtroom on HDTV. PictureItSettled (free) A unique app to help you better picture your case negotiations and plan your next steps. The App Store site describes it best: PictureItSettled tracks the dollar moves in negotiation. But, perhaps more importantly, it also tracks the time interval between offers. The app then takes that offer history and extrapolates it out in both dollars and time to help the parties picture whether and when they might reach a deal. The actual offers are connected by solid lines, and the extrapolations are dotted. The app also gives you the ability to keep track of multiple negotiations. 4 IPAD APPS continued from page 33 TrialPad 2.0 ($89.99) Having the distinction of being named the number one trial product of the year in 2011, this trial presentation and file management app while not inexpensive may well be worth the cost. One published review states: TrialPad offers the best parts of a full blown laptop/desktop trial presentation system in a simple-to-use package at a fraction of the cost. Available features are too numerous to list, so check out the full description at the itunes App Store. LAW PRACTICE & PRODUCTIVITY APPS Audiotorium Class & Meeting Notes ($5.99) Billed as the best app available for note taking, this app even provides secure password protection if your notes need to be kept confidential. Helps you record, review, organize and share notes taken in meetings or at conferences. Features such as bolding, underlining or using bullet points and adding audio recordings make it extremely useful. CLE Mobile (free) It s a unique app created by West LegalEd Center that allows you to search and download more than 4,500 CLE courses, and watch and listen to them on your ipad. And, of course, you get CLE credit if your state allows! DocScanner ($3.99) This must-have app turns any document (e.g., invoices, receipts, typed notes from a meeting, etc.) into a PDF by simply taking a photo of it. You can even snap a picture of notes on a whiteboard, and DocScanner will convert it to PDF. Documents To Go Premium ($16.99) Lets you open, edit, save, and create documents in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and WordPerfect. Redlines and track changes can be seen, but you cannot redline documents you draft using the app. DragonDictation (free) All thumbs when it comes to typing? Then this is a must-have app for you. Quickly dictate your notes, instructions, messages, text messages, tweets or social networking updates by simply speaking into Dragon Dictation. Multiple languages are supported. DropBox (free for up to 2GB of space) This app gives you the ability to store your documents in the cloud and share those files between computers. Caveat emptor: Questions about the security of files stored in DropBox abound. Be careful about leaving confidential documents in DropBox. It is advised to use the app to transfer the documents only and then delete them from the app s cloud server, especially if they are confidential. Feeddler (free) If you follow multiple blogs, this great RSS (aka Really Simple Syndication) app will help if you use Google Reader as your feed reader. It syncs perfectly with Google Reader accounts, but its support of banner ads is a drawback. GoodReader ($4.99) A must have app for reading and editing PDF and other types of documents. One drawback is no continuous scrolling rather you must navigate your documents page by page. iannotate ($9.99) This is a highly touted app for reading, annotating and sharing PDF documents. It allows searching of your PDFs and permits opening of multiple documents, and is currently the only PDF reader app that offers continuous scrolling of the documents, which can be a timesaver. ipleading ($4.99) Helps the busy attorney or paralegal easily create and litigation docu- 34 RES GESTÆ SEPTEMBER 2012

5 ments that conform to rules of pleading in state and federal courts. OnLive (free) Installs a standard Windows 7 desktop on your ipad and provides you with the full version of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. OfficeTime ($7.99) A great app to help you track your time and expenses for your clients, and it works offline, thus no need for wifi or 3G/4G network availability. Penultimate or UPAD ($4.99) Purportedly equipped with the best handwriting and drawing engine in the world, UPAD lets you use your finger or stylus for note taking, document editing and drawing. Reeder ($2.99) Similar to Feeddler, this RSS app syncs with Google Reader to let you keep up with the blogs you monitor, and unlike Feeddler it is ad free so the low price may be worth it versus the free Feeddler app. SpiderOak (free up to 2 GB storage) This app is much like DropBox in allowing storage and transfer of files but more secure as the files are encrypted with password protection a great app to help you safely store your documents and easily collaborate with others. Things ($9.99) It s a useful app for creating to-do lists and notes and tracking due dates and projects, especially for solo or small firm attorneys or paralegals who may not have a robust company system. TimeMaster + Billing ($9.99) A handy timekeeping app that helps you track time by start, stop and/or by duration. You can also organize your time by client as well as track expenses and more. TranscriptPad ($49.99) This cool app allows you to put multiple paperless transcripts on your ipad for quick review, searching and flagging as well as printing or ing them to your colleagues. LEGAL REFERENCE APPS House & Senate Guide (free) Need the contact information for a U.S. senator or representative? This app lets users browse for members of Congress by last name, state, chamber or party. Manual for the United States of America ($2.99) Places multiple United States founding documents at your fingertips! (The second edition is $6.99.) WordWeb (free/$1.99) It s a dictionary, thesaurus and word finder on your ipad! Includes more than 285,000 words and is available in two editions: standard (free) and audio (not free). The audio version includes everything in the standard edition plus more than 70,000 audio pronunciations. RESOURCES FOR FINDING LEGAL APPS ipad4legal.com A website listing ipad apps that target the legal profession. Users can the site owner and suggest apps that they have found useful be added to the site. MobileAppsforLaw.com A searchable database of legal apps. Requires an annual subscription fee. Quixey.com A unique search engine app to help you find apps that do what you need them to do. UCLA Guide on Mobile Legal Apps A great website that provides reviews of apps categorized as legal research and news, law school and bar exam study, productivity and fun. APPS FOR THE TRAVELING ATTORNEY GateGuru (free) Named a top 5 air travel app by CNN, this app provides you with real-time flight status information and ability to receive push notifications for same, real-time security line wait times, and interactive airport amenities listings for 125 global airports and much more. SmartTraveler (free) If you happen to be lucky and your work or for that matter pleasure travel takes you to international destinations, this U.S. Department of State app is a must have! The app provides quick access to up-to-date official country information, travel alerts and warnings, maps, U.S. embassy locations and much more. TripIt (free) This app is for you if you ve ever booked a trip and then had trouble finding and organizing your itinerary information. Once you ve booked your trip, simply your confirmation message to plans@tripit.com, and TripIt automagically organizes your trip details into a single, useful, easy-to-find itinerary. The number of mobile apps continues to grow. But just as with printed books of old you need to be certain that your apps are current, especially those that actually download data to your device. Make sure to update your apps when alerted to do so to ensure you have the most recent version, features and data. 1.
