Education is compulsory from ages 6 to 16 and is fully funded by the state at all levels. Church and private schools have augmented a spectrum of state schools and they receive subsidies from the state. The schools are funded from the State budget (according the number of pupils and students), regional and district budget, fees, institutional entrepreneurship, donations. Summer holiday in primary and secondary schools in Slovakia is from the 1st of July until the 31st of August. There is a few days holiday around Christmas and Easter, and on national holidays. 2

Grading and reports Students at primary and secondary schools in Slovakia receive marks from 1 to 5, 1 is the best, 5 is the worst. They receive school reports at the end of each school term. Pre-school Education Kindergartens are assigned for children from 3 to 6 years of age. Their main function in addition to caring for children is preparation for primary school. 3

Primary Education Primary schools consists of 9 grades and 2 stages: The first stage ISCED 1, grades 1-4 The second stage ISCED 2, grades 5-9 The primary school may also include a school club. Art Schools Besides primary and secondary schools, there are afternoon schools for music instruments, dancing or painting. After lessons children at primary school can spend their time in youth centres where they can write their homework, draw or play games. 4

Secondary Schools Secondary education is comprised of three types of secondary schools: gymnasium, secondary specialized school and secondary vocational school. The applicants must pass selective exams for all types of secondary schools. Secondary Grammar Schools called Gymnasiums Provide general secondary education and prepare students particularly for further study at higher education institutions. The study lasts four years and ends with the "Maturita Examination". This examination is given after at least 12 years of total school attendance. Students must pass this examination successfully if they plan to apply for study at a university or a college. 5

Types of Gymnasiums A gymnasium with 8 years of study, where pupils are admitted after selection exams written at the end of 5th year of elementary school A bilingual gymnasium with 5 years of study A sport gymnasium Secondary Specialized Schools Prepare students mainly for occupations in technical and economic sectors, pre-school education, medical nursery care, and fine arts and design. Students at these schools must pass the Maturita examination in both general and specialized subjects. They are then prepared for work in the field of study or may continue to study on institutions of higher education. It takes as a rule 4 years to complete study at a secondary specialized school. 6

Conservatory Provides study in such fields as singing, music, and dancing or dramatic arts. Secondary Vocational Schools Prepare students for various occupations and working activities, which may or may not require training and the Maturita Examination. Education and training comprises general and vocational part. It takes 2-4 years to complete and is provided for those not qualified to attend a secondary school. Students who successfully complete the vocational education and pass the Maturita Examination, however, may continue to study at a higher education institution. 7

Special Schools provide education using special educational and training methods, tools and forms for students with mental, sensorial or physical handicaps, students with dysphasia, students with multiple handicaps, difficult-to-handle students, ill or weakened students placed in medical facilities and to prepare them for their integration into the working process and social life. Special Schools The curriculum does not substantially differ from other secondary schools, but the methods of education differ. The special schools exist from kindergarten up to secondary school. Special education and training is provided also in the form of integration of handicapped students into the regular schools, or into special classes within regular schools with the assistance of specialized teachers. 8

Special Schools Special schools usually accept students on the recommendation of pedagogic, psychological, or specialized advisory centers. Teachers working at special schools must have attended university and received special pedagogic education in the respective specialization. Post-Secondary Education Many secondary vocational schools offer the possibility for graduates to continue with the education for 2 or 3 years of study. This education is leading to upgrading the already gained qualification, obtaining of additional i and new scientific ifi and practical knowledge in the respective field of study or training and education in a different field of study. 9
