This certification means that the equipment meets certain telecommunications network protective and operational safety requirements. The department does not guarantee the equipment will operate to the user's satisfaction. Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible to be connected to the facilities of the local telecommunications company (Telco). The equipment must also be installed using an acceptable method of connection. The customer should be aware that compliance with the above conditions might not prevent degradation of service in some situations. 3 Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized Canadian maintenance facility designated by the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment. For their own protection, users should ensure that the electrical ground connections of the power utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together. This precaution may be particularly important in rural areas. CAUTION: Users should not attempt to make such connections themselves, but should contact the appropriate electric inspection authority, or electrician, as appropriate. A label is located on the solder side of the unit containing the FCC registration number. Connection to party line service is subject to state tariffs. Your telephone company may discontinue your service if your equipment causes harm to the telephone network. They will provide advance notification of disconnection, if possible. During notification, you will be informed of your right to file a complaint to the FCC. 3 Occasionally, your telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operation, or procedures that could affect the operation of your equipment. 9 4.1 Compliance Digital T1/E1 PCI (HMP) Board 4 Introduction The PIKA T1/E1 PCI board provides a solution for voice and data applications with four spans available for use with T1 or E1 connectivity. The T1/E1 is software configurable, with no hardware jumpers or switches, and can be installed into any 32-bit PCI slot. The card is part of the HMP family of PIKA boards where all digital signal processing is done on the host processor. The board is software configured via a software API to use either T1 or E1 adaptation with a suite of connectivity protocols. The card also supports several types of Telco central office switches and private branch exchanges (PBX). It also provides four digital line interfaces. Digital line interfaces are used to connect to T1 or E1 digital lines provided by the Telco. Part Number and Serial Number Each board has a part number and a serial number label. The part number is in the form PN PIK-xx-yyyyy and the serial number is in the form SN PIK-xxx-yyyyy. 5

The following tables list approval information for EMC/EMI, Telecom, and safety standards. NOTE: The term self-declared indicates the card was tested by a third-party test facility, but does not require an official approval number by a country or region s approval standard authority. For the TBR21 Telecom specification, testing was performed by an in-house test facility. EMC/EMI EMC/EMI standards govern the amount of electromagnetic interference and immunity of electrical devices. Connector pinouts ( see page 12) description of each electrical connection on all connectors 5.1 Block Diagram The following figure is a high-level diagram of the circuitry on the T1/E1 PCI board. Any components located within the large dashed lines indicate components located on the board. 5 8

13 5.2 Board Dimensions Digital T1/E1 PCI (HMP) Board All data communication occurs between the PC and the T1/E1 PCI board using the PCI bus interface. Control information is sent along the board s main data/control bus to setup, configure, and control the various components on the card. For example, the AllOnHost driver may send a message to each of the framers to configure them. The heart of the T1/E1 PCI is the Xilinx Spartan II FPGA that streams data to and from the host processor through its DMA controller providing a minimum amount of latency. The FPGA also controls and monitors the line reference clocking in conjunction with the DPLL. 5 Communication with each digital line interface is done over a single high-speed serial data interface. A single quad framer interfaces to all four line interfaces through other digital line circuitry for connecting to the Telco. The framer formats the digital audio for transmission on the telephone network. All applications processing, such as conferencing and audio playback/record, are done on the host. 5.2 Board Dimensions The T1/E1 PCI board conforms to the PCI 2.2 specification for board dimensions. The board is of short length and should fit in any standard chassis. 9

Three views are shown: Top view (looking down on the card). Side view (looking at the side with line interface modules). For imperial measurements in inches, divide the metric measurement by Component Layout The T1/E1 PCI board uses surface mount technology to ensure a low component profile. The following diagrams show the on-board components for both the front and back of the board, respectively. 10

15 5.5 Expansion Boards Digital T1/E1 PCI (HMP) Board Jumper Settings The T1/E1 PCI board has no jumpers and does not require hardware configuration. 5.5 Expansion Boards The Digital and Analog expansion connectors allow for future expansion of board capabilities by installing daughter boards onto the 11

Daughter boards will have maximal dimensions not exceeding the baseboard dimensions. 5.6 Connector Pinouts Digital Line Jacks A T1/E1 PCI board has four T1/E1 digital line interface jacks. The following diagram shows the T1/E1 digital line interface jacks. Connector Pinouts The T1/E1 PCI digital line interface connectors are terminated with an industry-standard RJ-48C connector. Each connector provides access to a T1/E1 digital line interface. The following figure shows the pinouts on the RJ-48C digital line interface jack. The Transmit and Receive lines are with respect to the T1/E1 PCI board, not the Telco line. 5 12

An abbreviation for the power ratio in decibel (db) of the measured power referenced to one milliwatt (mw). An abbreviation for the power in dbm measured at a zero transmission level point. Loop Start - A method of starting (seizing) a telephone line or trunk by sending a supervisory signal (going off-hook) to the Central Office. With loop start, you seize a line by bridging through a resistance the tip and ring (both wires) of your telephone line. Coder/Decoder - converts analog signals to digital signals. Canadian Standards Association - An independent organization that establishes and tests safety standards for electronic components and systems for the Canadian marketplace. ElectroMagnetic Compatibility.- The sensitivity of a system to EMI. ElectroMagnetic Interference - The interference in signal transmission and reception caused by electrical and magnetic fields. Federal Communications Commission - The government agency responsible for regulating telecommunications in the United States. Interactive Voice Response - A phone technology allowing a telephone caller to select options from a voice menu and interact with the phone system. Mean Time Between Failure - The estimated average time before a failure occurs in a component. Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory - The U.S. government body that determines if products meet safety standards to provide the assurance these products are safe for use in the workplace. PCI Express is an implementation of the PCI computer bus that uses existing PCI programming concepts and communications standards, but bases it on a much faster serial communications system. Ringer Equivalency Number - A number that denotes the loading a telephone ringer has on the line. Registered Jack - RJ are telephone and data jacks registered with the FCC. 7 15
