1 7 November 2006 GPS Pathfinder ProXH, ProXT and XB receivers: Setting up Bluetooth Connections to a Panasonic Toughbook This document explains how to use the Bluetooth Manager software on a Panasonic Toughbook notebook to set up a Bluetooth connection to a GPS Pathfinder ProXH or ProXT receiver, or a GPS Pathfinder XB receiver. Summary The Bluetooth Manager software that is provided with a Panasonic Toughbook CF-18 and CF-29 notebook allows you to form a Bluetooth connection in Express or Custom mode: In Express mode, the default COM port that is assigned to the connection is COM40. This port is not available in all GPS field software. In Custom mode, you can choose the COM port to use for the connection. You can also choose which Bluetooth service of the ProXH or ProXT receiver you want to connect to. To ensure that the connection is set up correctly, Trimble recommends that you use Custom mode. Before you begin Ensure that the Bluetooth wireless technology is enabled on the receiver and on the notebook. On a ProXH or ProXT receiver: 1. Check that the Bluetooth LED is flashing when the receiver is on. 2. If the LED is not flashing, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to toggle Bluetooth on. Note: If Bluetooth is still not enabled, use the Radio Activation Manager from the ProXH or ProXT Downloads area of the Trimble Technical Support website ( to re-activate Bluetooth. 2 On a GPS Pathfinder XB receiver: 1. Check that the Bluetooth LED is flashing when the receiver is on. 2. If the LED is not flashing, turn the receiver off and then back on again. On the Panasonic Toughbook: 1. Check the Bluetooth Switch icon in the system tray. If Bluetooth is disabled, the icon is crossed out. 2. To enable Bluetooth, right click the Bluetooth Switch icon and then select Enable Bluetooth. Note: If the Bluetooth Switch icon does not appear in the system tray, select Start / All Programs / Panasonic / Bluetooth Switch. Forming a Bluetooth connection To form a Bluetooth connection between the Panasonic Toughbook and a ProXH, ProXT, or GPS Pathfinder XB receiver: 1. In the Control Panel, open the Bluetooth Local COM application. 2. In the Existing COM Ports list, check the Owner column to see if there is a LocalCOM-Client. 3. Do one of the following: If there is a LocalCOM-Client, write down the COM port number associated with the entry. The LocalCOM-Client is the Bluetooth service that you should use to connect to a ProXT or ProXH receiver, or a GPS Pathfinder XB receiver. Go to Step 5. If there is no LocalCOM-Client, you must create this service. Go to Step 4. Page 2

3 4. To create a LocalCOM-Client: a. In the Bluetooth Local COM dialog, click Add. The Bluetooth Local COM Setup Wizard appears. b. Select Create a Bluetooth virtual COM port for a Client and then click Next. c. Select the COM port that you want to use for the Service from the Existing COM Ports list then click Finish. d. In the Bluetooth Local COM dialog, click OK. Note: If you need to connect to more than one Bluetooth serial port devices at the same time, you can create additional LocalCOM-Client Services. Page 3

4 5. Do one of the following to run the Bluetooth Settings application: Click on the Desktop Select Start / All Programs / Bluetooth / Bluetooth Settings Note: When the Bluetooth Settings application is run for the first time, or when no connections have been formed, the New Connection Wizard appears automatically. The main window of the Bluetooth Settings application will be hidden by the New Connection Wizard. 6. In the New Connection Wizard, select Custom Mode. 7. Click Next to start a search for nearby Bluetooth devices. 8. A list of Bluetooth devices is displayed. The GPS Pathfinder XB receiver appears in the list as BTGPS. If more than one GPS Pathfinder XB receiver is turned on and within range, there will be more than one BTGPS entry. To connect to a specific GPS Pathfinder XB receiver, turn off all other GPS Pathfinder XB receivers and then click Refresh to repeat the search for nearby devices. Page 4

5 9. Select the required receiver and then click Next to form the initial Bluetooth connection between the receiver and the notebook. A list of services offered by the receiver appears. ProXH and ProXT receivers have two Bluetooth serial ports (the GPS Pathfinder XB receiver only has one Bluetooth serial port). 10. Select the required port (usually Bluetooth Port 1) and click Next. The Select a COM port screen appears. 11. Clear the Use default COM port check box. A message appears recommending that you use the default COM port setting. Page 5

6 12. Click OK to dismiss the message. 13. The COM port list is now available. Select the COM port that you want to assign to the connection on the Panasonic Toughbook and then click Next. 14. If required, change the connection name and the icon for the connection. 15. Click Next to complete the connection. 16. Click Finish to close the New Connection wizard. The main window of the Bluetooth Settings application appears. The connection is now ready to be used. 17. Click to close the Bluetooth Settings application. Page 6

7 Using the Bluetooth connection When you have created the Bluetooth connection: 1. Start the GPS field software. 2. Select the COM port assigned to the connection and then connect. Page 7
