1 Rules for the Degree of Master of Public Health (Degree code: 0779X) These rules should be read in conjunction with the general rules and the general information in Part 1 of the Calendar. See General Rules PG11 to PG18 regarding duration of study, re-registration, requirements for dissertation, etc. PA40 Admission requirements A student must: (a) hold the Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (or a recognised equivalent) or (b) be a health worker with an honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field of study. (For selection according to this admission criterium, candidates will be expected to have achieved a weighted average mark of 60% in that degree.) (c) hold an appropriate four-year Bachelor s degree. (For selection according to this admission criterium, candidates will be expected to have achieved a weighted average mark of at least 65% in that degree.) (d) be an applicant who has prior experience which has provided him or her with a level of competence which is deemed by the Senate to be adequate for the purpose of study in the MPH degree. Applicants shall be subjected to selection and may be required to comply with further conditions for admission, such as that their professional experience should be in a field relevant to public health. Consideration will be given to academic merit, prior work experience, future career plans, employer support, commitment to public health. The selection of applicants occurs at the end of November of each year. Applications should be submitted to the University before 30 September of each year. No late registrations can be accepted. Candidates selected for the MPH should take at least 3 papers in the first year of study. If candidates do not pass at least two papers in each year of study, they may not continue with the degree. Recognition of credits gained prior to registration for the degree: With approval of the college, a candidate may be exempted from and given credit for (a) modules with a total credit value not exceeding 64, which form part of the course work requirements for the Master of Public Health degree and which have previously been passed by the candidate whilst registered for non-degree purposes for another qualification (b) modules forming part of the course work requirements of the Master of Public Health degree, passed by the candidate whilst registered for the degree in one of the institutions participating in the MPH programme in the years 2001, 2002, 2003 or NB Prospective students are requested to contact the Department of Health Studies for information. PA41 Duration of study The degree must be completed within a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years of study. PA42 Curriculum Old curriculum Curriculum B: Medical Informatics (PHI) NB Curriculum B of the MPH is phased out and the last new intake of students will be in Students will have until the end of 2014 (examination period in January 2015) to complete this curriculum. (b) To be awarded the degree with distinction, a candidate must obtain an average of at least 75%.
