2 NATURALLY EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY INSULATION For 30 years the mission of ACTIS has been to improve insulation by offering solutions that are more and more efficient, environmentally friendly and safe for people. Because wood is a natural, high quality insulant, ACTIS has developed a new range of thermal and acoustic wood fibre insulation products for roofs, attics, walls and floors in either traditional or timber frame buildings, which meet the regulatory requirements for energy conservation in new build as well as renovation projects. ADVANTAGES OF INSULATION Thermal performance and energy savings The lower the thermal conductivity (λ) of an insulation product is, the more efficient it is at reducing heat loss. With a declared conductivity value ( D ) of 0.036W/m.K is the best insulation product of its type. Due to its natural insulating properties, it significantly reduces the energy consumption of buildings resulting from heating in winter and cooling in summer. In winter, because of the material s low thermal conductivity, heat loss to the outside is reduced. In summer, the excellent inertia of wood allows the absorption of high temperature variations and slows down heat transfer through insulated walls, roofs or floors (thermal time lag). High density and durability is more dense than traditional fibre insulation with similar thermal conductivity or resistance, resulting in a greater thermal performance. It is effective at reducing noise travelling from inside and outside the building, providing optimal acoustic comfort. It is more resistant to air infiltration and reduces thermal loss. It is less likely to sag and slump, and maintains insulation performance over time. Ecodesign and the environment insulation was developed using an ecodesign approach with the objective of minimising its environmental impact throughout its life cycle. ACTIS is PEFC certified. The wood fibres used come from a sustainable source and are derived 100% from the recycling of wood offcuts from sawmills. The chain of supply is carefully managed and controlled. Timber is a natural, renewable, raw material, which is also plentiful and available locally. The timber industry in France is well organised and nearly all forests are sustainably managed. Trees naturally absorb carbon and therefore wood can contribute significantly to reducing the greenhouse effect. Even when processed and installed, timber retains this property throughout its life cycle. ACTIS wood-fibre based insulation products are dry-process manufactured, which saves both water and energy. 2 SYLVACTIS insulation batts do not cause pollution at the end of their life. They can be used as a source of energy, by combustion for instance. AC101_BROCH 8P FT BOIS-UK_V2.indd 2 08/04/11 12:06
3 AC101_format : 210x297 (plié) - 8 pages «Brochure BOIS»_ UK _ V2 _ 100% Preservation of internal air quality By helping buildings to breathe, the insulation can contribute to a feeling of comfort and well-being inside the building. Allows water vapour diffusion. Regulates air humidity naturally. Simplicity and ease of installation Flexible batts which are easy to install. Pleasant to the touch, the insulation does not cause any skin irritation. Tests carried by the Laboratory of Chemical Engineering in Toulouse have shown that the size of the fibres used in the manufacture of ACTIS insulation is greater than that of dust particles considered hazardous to health. Marking All the properties of have been laboratory-tested and deemed to comply with the requirements of Standard EN The product is CE-marked. FOCUS ON THE BENEFITS OF THERMAL INERTIA THE GREATER THE INERTIA, THE MORE THE STRUCTURE IS CAPABLE OF STORING HEAT, THEREFORE HAVING A COOLING EFFECT Thermal inertia can be demonstrated in two ways: time lag and thermal amplitude reduction. - Thermal time lag is the time difference between the moments when external and internal temperatures reach their peak. The time lag for an insulation product is the time necessary for heat to pass through it. - Amplitude reduction is the ratio of external temperature variation over internal temperature variation : Max ext Δ C / Max int Δ C. insulation has the specific ability, relative to its volume and weight, to store heat and this ability makes it extremely inert, especially valuable for making buildings comfortable in summer: The insulation absorbs temperature variations throughout the day and the dwelling remains at an average temperature, slightly cooler than outside during the day and a little warmer than outside during the night. Ensure that the surface area to be insulated is clean, weathertight and in good condition and that the roof is free from watertightness defects. Keep a ventilated space, if required, in accordance with current standards (BS 5250), between the top surface of the insulation and the underside of roof battens. The first layer of insulation should be tightly packed between the rafters, taking into account the extra dimensions required (see guidance on Pages 6 and 7). Ensure perfect continuity of the insulation at batt edges and at the junctions with floors, gables, purlins and ridges. (see detail u). Also ensure the continuity of insulation at junctions between roof slopes and any dwarf walls and unused roof space. Dwarf walls should be insulated at the same time as the roof. (see detail v). The second layer of insulation should be laid at right angles to the rafters on the metal hangers and rails supporting the lining. Ensure insulation continuity as described above. Fix a vapour control layer to the lightweight metal section on the warm side of the insulation using double-sided adhesive tape. Overlap the vapour control layer at each joint by 50mm and cover all joints with a suitable adhesive tape. 7 AC101_format : 210x297 (plié) - 8 pages «Brochure BOIS»_ UK _ V2 _ 100% Measure the spacing between timber studs and cut the insulation batts accordingly, adding 5 to 10mm (extra width) so that the batts are held in position and touch the studs over their entire length. Install batts between the timber studs by packing them in the space provided. Take particular care to make air and weathertight all batt joints, angles, wall/ceiling and wall/floor junctions. Staple the vapour control layer* onto the studs. At all joints overlap the VCL by 50mm and cover with suitable adhesive tape. In order to provide a space for services (service zone) and make lining installation easier, ACTIS recommends screwing battens onto the studs, at 600mm centres. Install the plasterboard or other finish. *Note: A vapour control layer may be necessary in some cases. Please refer to applicable guidance BS min. 120 to to 45 Between 7 and 10 depending on the type of sheathing material Cross section SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS Roof lights Joints between roof lights and the insulation should be completely sealed. In order for the insulation to be continuous, make the junctions air and weathertight by applying a flexible insulating tape or insulating expanding foam. Electrical networks and lighting equipment Installation of electrical networks, power points, switches or light housings should not damage the insulation or compromise its continuity. Junction boxes, octopus connectors and low voltage current transformers should be fixed onto the roof structure and should not be covered by the insulation. As far as possible, cables should be fitted in the service zones provided between the insulation and the internal lining. Low voltage spot lights should be protected to ensure adequate ventilation. Always refer to the manufacturers technical information. The whole installation should comply with applicable regulations and standards. Attic access hatch The access hatch to an unused roof space should be insulated to avoid thermal bridging: the hatch should remain airtight even after it is opened and closed (insert a piece of insulation cut to match the shape of the hatch box frame). Ventilation outlet Any Controlled Mechanical Ventilation unit fixed to the roof structure should not be covered by the insulation. If there are flexible or rigid ventilation ducts going through the insulation, any gaps should be sealed with insulating expanding foam. Chimneys, inserts, heat exchangers, low voltage lighting and other intense sources of heat Guidance on fire safety precautions around chimneys is provided in applicable regulations. The 40mm fire gap around the heat source should be insulated using an uncovered insulant which has Euroclass fire rating classification A1. SYLVACTIS 55 FX insulation has Euroclass classification E and should never be used to insulate chimneys, inserts, heat exchangers or any other source of heat greater than 80ºC. GUIDANCE FOR USE Measuring and cutting batts should be tightly butted up together so that the insulation holds its position perfectly and thermal bridging is reduced. Batt widths and lengths should allow for 5 to 10mm extra compared to the dimensions of the space to be insulated. Measure between rafters, joists or studs or, if the last batt needs cutting, between the insulation and the edge of the space to be filled, and then cut to the required size allowing for the extra 5 to 10mm. 7 AC101_BROCH 8P FT BOIS-UK_V2.indd 7 08/04/11 12:06
8 GUIDANCE FOR USE (CONTINUED) When cutting ACTIS flexible wood insulation, ACTIS recommends using a standard multipurpose knife and resting batts on a hard surface. For long batts ideally use a cutting table or a portable electric circular or band saw. Spacing between centres and thicknesses When installing the insulation between rafters, joists or studs, ACTIS recommends matching the thickness of the insulation to the spacing between rafter, joist or stud centres so that the insulation is self-supporting. Spacing between centres (mm) Minimum thickness (mm) Storage Pallets of SYLVACTIS can be stored outside for a maximum period of two months after receipt, provided that any rain water can drain away freely and that the plastic wrapping is in good condition. Health and safety The insulation batt s wood fibres do not cause any skin irritation and are not hazardous to respiratory tracts. However, ACTIS recommends using standard protective goggles and dust masks when carrying out installation work over prolonged periods. Fire precautions and internal lining insulation has fire Euroclass classification E rating. As a general rule it is recommended that contact between the insulation and a severe heat source (soldering iron, flame, spark etc.) is avoided. Insulation products in residential buildings should be protected by an internal lining such as plasterboard in accordance with relevant fire safety requirements. In the case of public buildings, the internal linings should meet the requirements of relevant legislation on the use of combustible insulation in public buildings.
