1 Sustainable Learning in the Community - Raising awareness of older people s competencies and identifying new opportunities for learning and engagement Documentation of the workshop Title of workshop: SLIC Fenntartható tanulás a közösségben Dates of workshop: 22 and 29 April 2009 Venue of workshop: Hotel Corvin Organisation running the workshop: Budapest Cultural Centre Country: Hungary
2 Please write a short summary for each workshop (2-3 pages) along these questions. Then fill in Annex I and II with your workshop details. I. General impression 1. What have been the strong parts of the workshop? - Skills profile: It was unexpectedly successful and easy to fill in. Our participants enjoyed the self-assessment method which was completely new for them. - Talking about voluntary work: However, our participants were active older people most of them actually do not do any voluntary work. This was considered very useful. - Method They enjoyed sharing ideas and experiences (discussions in pairs, in groups, in plenary) and their involvement throughout the workshop. - Welcome and introduction: We heard prior to the workshop that the participants had worried about giving the wrong answers at the workshop. We explained the title of the workshop, the aim, the method, the trainers role quite detailed and it helped a lot to set the tone of the workshop. 2. What have been the weak parts of the workshop? - Information they received prior to the workshop: According to the result of the evaluation the information they received before the workshop was not enough for them. (We translated the invitation letter and sent them via or by post.) 3. What was the biggest challenge in the performance of the workshop? - Fortunately there was no big challenge. 4. Would you offer this workshop again? - Yes, it is planned to offer this to people who are just before retirement. We would like to start a national programme for these people and SLIC workshop will be part of it. 5. What would you do differently the next time? - I would start to organise my participants earlier. It turned out that older people are more busy then us. 1
3 - I would try to give information personally (not in a letter) prior to the workshop. However our participants read the letter they were unsure about the aim and the content of the workshop. - I would change the name of the workshop. SLIC sounds funny in Hungarian and the subtitle is too long and complicated. 6. Which tools/forms etc. would you recommend for the handbook? - I would recommend all tools and forms we used during the workshop. (see workshop design). I think the forms were simple and understandable. It turned out that the skills summary and the action plan together prepared very well the filling-in of the SLIC overview. 7. Is a follow-up day planned? - Yes, we plan a follow up day sometime in autumn. - The planned content of this day: o it is essential to get feedback on how far our participants got with their plans and check what was the effect of the workshop on their lives o continuing the discussion on involving others (inactive older people) o voluntary work new examples, projects, help teaching service establish study circles, small communities 2
4 II. Participants of the workshop 1. How many participants attended the workshop? Was it easy to find participants? 2a) How did you advertise the workshop? First we addressed those who attended at the interviews last year. In the second round we invited new members of the Silver Net Association. 2b) What were the difficulties, if any occurred? Some older people had already arranged programmes (doctor, family engagement, trip) when I called them, so we had to find other participants who did not participated at the interview. 3. What information did the participants receive beforehand? We translated the letter which was written by Nick and sent them. 4. Were you aware of diversity issues? No. 5. Was your workshop targeted to address diversity issues? Please give a short description. No. 6. What was your general impression of the participants were most of them already active before the workshop? Our participants were all active. They are former participants of Click on, Granny! course, members of the Silver Net Association, or our regular visitors. They all live an active life but vast majority of them do not do voluntary work in society. 7. Which field of activity was of greatest interest for the participants? - Skills profile: Self-assessment as a method was completely new for the participants. They enjoyed concentrating on themselves ant discovering their knowledge / competences. - Getting to know new voluntary work possibilities. 8. Which feedback did you receive from participants? - The workshop was useful; they enjoyed the new method (training instead of presentation) and the company. They liked the environment (hotel conference room). 3
