The 4 H motto is learn by doing and is the best educational tool that we can provide for youth Additionally, the Mini 4 h program is set up to allow your child to exhibit a project at the 4 H Fair. 4 Whales Whales are animals that live in the ocean. Like many animals, whales breath air, make milk for their young and pump blood through a heart. Whales are sometimes called fish. But whales are not fish. Their front flippers are like the front legs of a dog. These flippers help them swim through water. They also have back legs. But since they do not need them, they have never grown outside their body. Whales breath through a special nose called a blowhole. Whales blow out old air and breathe in fresh air through this blowhole. Just like you and me, a whale needs to breath above water. They must come to the surface, get their blowhole above water, and exhale first (blow out the air) and then inhale new air. The blowhole is on top of their head. Whales also have a dorsal fin. This dorsal fin is on their back. It helps whales keep their balance. All whales have a tail called a fluke. Activity 1 parts of a whale You will need these things: Crayons, colored pencils or markers The parts of a Whale picture Here is what you do 1. Look at the parts of a whale picture and label them using the Parts of a whale information box.

Parts of a whale: A. Eyes B. Dorsal fin C. Blow Hole D. Fins E. Fluke

Types of Whales There are many types of whales. Which is your favorite? Blue Whale This is the largest animal to ever exist. It can be as long as 100 feet and weigh over 200 tons! The whale stays in the open ocean. Its color is blue grey. Humpback Whale The humpback whale has a black back with a white throat and belly. It grows to over 50 feet long. Sperm Whale This is the largest whale to have teeth. Like the Humpback whale, it is about 50 feet long. It has a big, flat snout (or nose) with a small jaw. Sperm Whales like the deep ocean. Sei Whale The sei Whale has a shiny gray color which makes them look like steel. When they float to the surface for air, you can see their entire back. White Whale This whale is pure white. It lives in the Arctic waters.

Gray Whale The Gray Whale does not have a dorsal fin. Instead there is a medium hump with a lot of little bumps on its back towards the fluke. Killer Whale The Killer Whale or Orca whale is very popular. The movie Free Willy was about a killer whale. These whales have a shiny black body with a white belly and grey side markings. Questions: 1. Which whale is your favorite? Why? 2. Which whales were easy to say? 3. Which whales were hard to say? Dolphins Dolphins are part of the whale family. This means they have the same parts that a whale has such as flippers, blowhole, and a fluke. They are also mammals. This means that they cannot breathe under water. They use their blowhole to breath. (Fish can breathe under water.) Dolphins are smaller than most whales.

They are also very friendly and playful. They enjoy playing by tossing seaweed and fish into the air. They even like to ride on waves. Different types Dolphins Bottlenose Dolphin This small dolphin grows about 10 feet long. It is the most popular dolphin. You can see a bottlenose Dolphin on the TV show called Flipper. This dolphin looks like it wears a smile. Hourglass Dolphin The Hourglass Dolphin is also called the whitesided dolphin. This dolphin has a dark top and a white belly and side markings. The side marking looks like an hourglass. Commerson s Dolphins This black and white dolphin loves to eat shrimp. They are also known for swimming in large schools or groups of fish. They do not have a beak like the Bottlenose Dolphin. Questions: 1. If you had a dolphin, what kind would you pick? Why? 2. Have you watched movies or TV shows about Dolphins? Which ones?

The Learning Dolphin For hundreds of years dolphins have been known for loving to play. They will turn almost anything into a toy. People have taught dolphins hand signs. Some dolphins have learned more than 40 signs Like Right, Left, Over, and even Frisbee. People have taught the dolphin to do tricks. Activity 2 The Dolphin Craze You will need these things: crayons Here s what you do: 1. Color the dolphin. If you had a Dolphin, what kind of fun things would you teach him or her?
