1 DIRECTIONS The prompt is given whole class in one setting. It is a cold, on-demand write no conferencing, no dictionaries, no additional help. The teacher is to monitor student writing during the writing time. Once all students have finished, the papers can be collected. The time 55 minute time frame is the maximum time allowed for the prompt. There is no need to cover word walls and information posted, but no additional resources are to be available for students. Directions are on the prompt pages. Students should read instructions (unless they have an accommodation) and work independently At the 40 minute point say : There are 15 minutes left. Please use the remaining time to finish your writing, editing and revising.

2 It s Not Dark Out! Read the information in the box. Then do the writing activity. It s not dark out yet and your parents make you go to bed at 8:00. Your friends are still out playing. Write about having to go to bed before your friends. How does it feel to have parents who make you go to bed at 8:00, when all your friends are still out and about? Why do you think they make you go to bed earlier? Do you think there is anything you could do to change their minds? Write a story about going to be before your friends. Be sure to include as many details as you can. Pre Writing Activity Plan your writing on another sheet of paper before you begin. Be sure your story has a beginning, middle, and end. Here are some questions to help with your writing: Why do you think your parent make you go to bed earlier? How does it make you feel? 7 The Lunch Money Read the information in the box. Then do the writing activity. First thing this morning, you noticed that the girl who sits next to you left a $5 bill on top of her desk. As your class gets ready for lunch, she discovers that her money is gone. What happened to the money? How will you help her solve this problem? What will you say to her if she doesn t find it? Write a real or make believe story about the missing lunch money. Be sure your story has a beginning, middle, and an end. Write as many descriptive details as you can to make your story interesting.
