1 Church Planting Leadership PT740 Professor: Thomas D. Hawkes, Ph.D. Course Description Students will come to a better understanding of the biblical concept of leadership, its character, competencies and practices. They will evaluate their own leadership effectiveness and develop a plan for growing in their character and competencies as a leader. They will develop a philosophy of leadership and also a plan for developing leaders in their own church plant or church. Course Learning Objectives A. Knowledge/understanding 1. To understand and be able to articulate a biblical model of character based leadership and how it compares to other theories of leadership. 2. To understand the importance of love for God and love for people to leadership. 3. To understand their own leadership practices strengths and weaknesses. 4. To understand how to lead teams effectively. 5. To understand how to lead a church plant effectively. 6. To understand how to develop leaders for the church plant. 7. To understand how to mentor leaders one to one. B. Skills/doing 1. Will be able to evaluate their own and other s leadership using the Leadership Practices Inventory. 2. Will know how to lead and develop teams. 3. Will be able to design and implement a leadership development program for emerging leaders. 4. Will be able to effectively mentor other leaders. 5. Will be able to do basic leadership skills: vision, planning, and organizational development. 6. Will write a philosophy/ theology of leadership. 7. Will complete a leadership project in the midst of the RTS community. C. Being/affective 1. To desire to develop their character in order to lead more biblically. 2. To desire to grow in their love for God and people in order to lead more biblically. 3. To grow in their desire to develop leaders. 4. To grow in their desire to develop as a leader. 5. 2 Course Objectives Related to MDiv* Student Learning Outcomes Course: PT 740 Professor: Dr. Thomas D. Hawkes Campus: Charlotte MDiv* Student Learning Outcomes In order to measure the success of the MDiv curriculum, RTS has defined the following as the intended outcomes of the student learning process. Each course contributes to these overall outcomes. This rubric shows the contribution of this course to the MDiv outcomes. *As the MDiv is the core degree at RTS, the MDiv rubric will be used in this Articulation (oral & written) Scripture Reformed Theology syllabus. Broadly understands and articulates knowledge, both oral and written, of essential biblical, theological, historical, and cultural/global information, including details, concepts, and frameworks. Significant knowledge of the original meaning of Scripture. Also, the concepts for and skill to research further into the original meaning of Scripture and to apply Scripture to a variety of modern circumstances. (Includes appropriate use of original languages and hermeneutics; and integrates theological, historical, and cultural/global perspectives.) Significant knowledge of Reformed theology and practice, with emphasis on the Westminster Standards. Rubric Moderate None Moderate Moderate Mini-Justification This course focuses on key biblical themes of pastoral leadership. This course presents a biblical model of leadership. While biblical in content, and Reformed in orientation, leadership only tangently touches the WCF. Sanctification Demonstrates a love for the Triune God that aids the student s sanctification. The biblical model of leadership offered in this course is based on growing in love for God and growth in holiness. Desire for Worldview Winsomely Reformed Preach Worship Shepherd Burning desire to conform all of life to the Word of God. Embraces a winsomely Reformed ethos. (Includes an appropriate ecumenical spirit with other Christians, especially Evangelicals; a concern to present the Gospel in a God-honoring manner to non-christians; and a truth-in-love attitude in disagreements.) Ability to preach and teach the meaning of Scripture to both heart and mind with clarity and enthusiasm. Knowledgeable of historic and modern Christianworship forms; and ability to construct and skill to lead a worship service. Ability to shepherd the local congregation: aiding in spiritual maturity; promoting use of gifts and callings; and encouraging a concern for non-christians, both in America and worldwide. This class teaches a model of leadership that is anchored in the Bible and grows with biblical knowledge. A biblical model of leadership that will minister to all types of Christians While a high view of preaching is presumed in a biblical approach to leadership, this course does not work on preaching skills. This course only touches on overall leadership of a church and its worship. This course advocates for and teaches skill in being a shepherd leader.

The Leadership Practices Inventory has one self and four Observers, turn the results in to be compiled, you will receive a report. The Observers should include: one supervisor, two people you lead, and one peer. The DISC should be completed and scored by you. The Spiritual Gifts Inventory should be completed and scored by you. 2. Plan for personal leadership growth, 3 pages. Develop a plan for your personal growth as a leader from here based on your leadership assessment results. Not a research paper, but a personal plan for growing in your own leadership.

4 3. Paper on Theology and Philosophy of leadership, 10 pages, follow the SBL style guide for footnotes, etc. This is a research paper. This paper answers the question: What do you understand about leadership theology, theory and practice? Utilizing the required readings, write a theology of leadership which will cover: definitions of leaderships, values of leadership, leadership character, leadership competencies and practices. 4. Plan for developing leaders in the new church, 10 pages, follow the SBL style guide for footnotes, etc. This is a research paper. This paper answers the question: How will you develop leaders in your church/church plant? Utilizing all the required readings design a plan for developing leadership in the church/church plant which will include: selection, development, competency model, and mobilization of leaders. 5. Leadership project in class. The class will be divided into groups of three, each triad has the assignment of implementing some project that will enhance RTS as a seminary. Class 3 Mentor Questions: Where have you struggled for increased faith? How did that help you mature as a Christian? What are some recent examples of personal repentance that you can share? How does that repentance help you mature as a Christian? What idols have you battled and how? Any insights into what idols I may be battling myself? Any advice on how best to respond with faith and repentance in my struggle? Class 4 Mentor Questions: How did you hear God s call into ministry and into this particular ministry? Any insights for me regarding calling? What deep pain, crosses, have you borne? What changes did this bring about in you as a leader? How do you wrestle with love of money, sex and power? Class 5 Mentor Questions: How do you work so as to depend on God s power and work for his glory only? What is your system for self-management of time and tasks? What are some ministry examples of stopping bad things, starting good and shepherding as a leader? Class 6 Mentor Questions: How have understanding your DISC profile and spiritual gifts helped you lead more effectively? Looking at my DISC and spiritual gift profile do you have any insights for how I might lead more effectively? Class 7 Mentor Questions: What have you learned about leadership from exposure to other cultures? How do cultural differences impact how you lead? How universal have you found the biblical principles of leadership? Class 8 Mentor Questions: Considering the results of my LPI what could I do to grow in two key areas of weakness? What could I do to enhance two key areas of strength?

How do you go about confronting people in one on one leadership? In light of the Situational Leadership model what leadership styles do you think I default to naturally? How do you balance the organizational, relational and spiritual aspects of teams leadership? Could you share some examples? What do you observe about me as a team leader, how might I improve?
