3 What is pregnancy rate? Heat detection rate (HDR) x Conception rate (CR) Usually expressed over a 21 day period by PC DART and Dairy Comp. Example - HDR 60% x CR 30% = 18% In other words Cows eligible to be bred that are actually bred (HDR) Cows bred that actually become pregnant (CR) X

4 Key Tips to Remember (Repro and beyond) Is the data accurate? Poor reporting/inconsistent reporting Areas to watch for this Heifer numbers Heifer breedings (beyond the 202). Cows enter and leaving the herd What is the sample size? Is it a yearly average or monthly figure?

7 Heat Detection Efficiency Most common mistake: Not Enough DIM, Days Open, $ When and How Often During the cooler parts of the day cows are more active At least 2 to 3 times each day Observe animals for a minimum of 20 minutes each time Signs of Inefficiency Low # Heats observed before 1 st service Avg DFB >80 days Interval between breeding >30 days

13 What is the impact? Improve PR from 14 % to 20% = $ 90 - $100 / cow / year for average US herd. Shifts in milk price, replacement value and milk yield (persistency) will cause changes in this amount.
