2 Introduction At St John the Evangelist CE Primary School, we recognise that handwriting is an important life skill. Children s ability to write fluently depends on a good foundation of taught handwriting in the early years of their education. We believe that neat and well-formed handwriting and neat presentation of written work helps to raise standards. We feel that the pupils take more pride in their own work and have a sense of ownership of their work. As a school we adopt the cursive style of handwriting. This is based on the following principles: By making each letter in one movement, children s hands develop a physical memory of it, making it easier to produce the correct shape. Because letters and words flow from left to right, children are less likely to reverse letters which are typically difficult (like b/d or p/q). There is a clearer distinction between capital letters and lower case letters. The continuous flow of writing ultimately improves speed and spelling. Cursive handwriting involves no re-learning as with printing and then joining later. Aims To raise standards in writing across the school. To raise standards of presentation across the school. To teach children to write with a flowing hand producing writing which is legible and fluent. To teach correct letter formation. To encourage children to develop a comfortable and efficient pencil/pen grip. To have a consistent approach across the school when teaching handwriting. To aid in the elimination of letter reversals by learning of word patterns and the correct joining of letters. To adopt a common approach towards handwriting by all adults when writing in children s books, when modelling writing to children or teaching.
3 The School Handwriting Style ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUWXYZ Handwriting Guidance for Foundation Stage In Foundation Stage children will learn to hold a pencil and other writing tools correctly. The children will be taught to form the letters in a cursive style with in strokes and flicks, so that they are ready to join. Handwriting is taught alongside phonics each day. Fine motor control is developed through games, creative work and manipulative activities. Emergent writing is encouraged through role play. Each Foundation Stage class has a writing area for child-initiated play. Children are exposed to a variety of print and fonts in Foundation Stage but adults model the cursive letter formation in all recording and display examples of this in the classroom. Handwriting Guidance for Key Stage 1 Children in Year 1 begin to join their writing using the continuous cursive style, so that by the end of Year 2 all children have a fluent, consistent style of joined cursive handwriting. Daily handwriting sessions are taught (15 minutes each day) to teach correct letter formation, pencil grip and posture. It is expected that these elements are reinforced and modelled in all writing activities across the curriculum. All children have a handwriting folder and practice book. Teachers use Joinit and Handwriting for Windows to create appropriate resources for children to use in handwriting sessions. Children in Year 1 and 2 only use pencil for handwriting practise and for work in exercise books. Teachers and Teaching Assistants only use the agreed school style to model writing or to record across all subjects.
4 Handwriting Guidance for Key Stage 2 By the time children enter Key Stage 2 they should be using a consistent, fluent cursive hand. Daily handwriting and presentation sessions are taught (15 minutes each day) to ensure the highest expectations. Children in Years 3 and 4 practise in a handwriting book, while children in Year 5 and 6 use a normal exercise book when they are deemed ready. Spelling conventions and patterns are practised alongside handwriting each day. All children have a handwriting folder and handwriting book. Teachers use Handwriting for Windows to create appropriate resources for children to use in practise sessions. Children from Year 5 upwards begin to use a blue handwriting pen, when the class teacher feels they are ready. Teachers and Teaching Assistants only use the agreed school style to model writing or to record across all subjects. Cursive Handwriting and Left Handed Children Left-handed children to sit on the left side of the desk. Left-handed children need to grip the pencil further away from the nib to enable them to see what they are writing. They may need to slant their work to enable the letters to be formed correctly and to be visible. Assessment and Monitoring Each term children s handwriting is assessed against the agreed year group expectations. This is done by the class teacher and moderated by the subject leader and headteacher. Additional support is planned for children with fine motor difficulties and parents are involved in supporting this work at home. Each term the subject leaders monitor books across a range of subjects to ensure that handwriting expectations are being applied across all subjects. All subject leaders have a responsibility for monitoring the quality of handwriting and presentation in their subject. Reward Systems Teachers use a range of rewards in recognising effort or quality in handwriting and presentation. Each term teachers select children to receive a handwriting certificate and handwriting pencil in assembly for: Best Effort Most Improved

6 Appendix Expectations by Year Group FS2 Most letters formed and orientated correctly and written with correct entry lines (from the bottom line) Letter size and spacing between words not consistent and ascenders (such as b, d and h ) and descenders (such as p, q and g ) often not distinguished Generally, upper and lower case letters are not mixed within words Year 1 All letters formed and orientated correctly and written with correct entry lines (from the bottom line) Letter size consistent, irregular spacing between words and ascenders and descenders becoming more distinguished Writing is usually a controlled printed style, with smaller letters Year 2 All letters formed and orientated correctly and written with correct entry lines (from the bottom line) Letter size consistent, regular spacing between words and ascenders and descenders distinguished
7 Letters will be joined, although this can sometimes detract from the overall regularity/fluency of the handwriting Year 3 All letters formed and orientated correctly and written with correct entry lines (from the bottom line) Letter size consistent, regular spacing between words and ascenders and descenders clearly distinguished Beginning to develop their own neat, clear style which is joined and fluent Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 By this point children have usually developed their own comfortable, joined, fluent and time-efficient handwriting style, based on the cursive formation and incorporating all of the features detailed above.
