1 South Korea s KT Corporation greatly reduces costs for its Mok-dong ICC data center Overview Business issue The Mok-dong Internet computing center (ICC) of KT Corporation, South Korea, is the hub for KT s virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and cloud computing services. All of these services require a substantial amount of memory. KT Corporation needed an assessment of the cost and ecological impact of the memory being used there to determine a more cost-effective and ecological way of continuing to provide its clients with high-performing and energy-efficient services. Solution KT Corporation assessed Samsung Green DDR3 memory a 30 nanometer (nm) class, 8 gigabyte (GB)/2 gigabit (Gb) based, 1.35 volt (V) module against a competitor s DDR3 registered dual in-line memory module (RDIMM) 50 nm class, 4 GB, 1.5 V product. All of the power-, thermal- and workload-related costs associated with the data center s VDI management server were analyzed during the testing. Results Results of the assessment showed that KT Corporation could decrease its data center expenses an average of 54 percent using the Samsung Green DDR3 memory module. Savings over the next 4 years are estimated at US$5 million in power costs alone. Also, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from the data center were projected to decrease from 139,056 metric tons to 95,122 metric tons, eliminating almost 44 metric tons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. 1 About the client KT Corporation, formerly Korea Telecom, is a South Korean integrated wired and wireless telecommunication service provider. Originally founded in 1981 as a public corporation, KT Corporation actively led South Korea s transition to the information era and played a key role in promoting the growth of South Korea into a globally recognized IT superpower. In 2009, KT Corporation merged with its mobile subsidiary, KTF. Challenge Several months ago, KT Corporation saw the shift in the consumer population from using PCs to mobile devices. To support this shift to mobile computing, the company moved toward cloud computing and VDI services supported out of the Mokdong ICC data center. These services require many servers and substantial memory, which together consume a tremendous amount of power. Understandably, the major power drain at the data center is the cooling and air conditioning systems for the server rooms, as well as the servers, CPUs, memory and networks inside them. In addition to meeting the need to reduce costs while maintaining high performance levels at the data center, KT Corporation faced other growing IT trends. They included using more eco-friendly IT parts and materials, stricter government regulations regarding greenhouse gas emissions and the industry s shift from just addressing corporate social responsibility (CSR) to creating greater shared value (CSV) between the company and the environment. 1

2 ICC tests showed a 31.6 percent total system power reduction. [M]emory consumes significant power in the system. Power consumption, thermal conditions and workload (timing) were analyzed using the following test conditions and populations: System: Quanta Board: Intel Tylersburg-EP 18 slots CPU: Westmere E GHz, Core 4, QPI 5.86 GT/s (maximum memory speed: 1066 Mbps) Bios setup: NUMA off, C3 disabled, C6 enabled Ambient room temperature: 16.6 C (61.88 F) Workload: Virtual desktop infrastructure Memory type Samsung: 30 nm class, 2 Gb-based 2Rx4, 8 GB, 1.35 V, 1,333 Mbps Company A: 50 nm class, 1 Gb-based, 2Rx4, 4 GB, 1.50 V, 1,066 Mbps VDI power consumption was measured based on performance of a typical task within the KT private cloud environment: providing a specific number of virtual machine instances with power. Two identical KT operating servers, with different memory, were configured for the test. One server was configured with Company A s 50 nm class dynamic random access memory (DRAM); the second server was configured with the latest Samsung Green 30 nm DDR3 DRAM. For the workload testing, a Logic Analyzer was used to examine system behavior under a specific workload. 3 Samsung Green DDR3 memory chip used 54 percent less power. Results The test results, with less than a 1 percent error rate, proved that Samsung Green DDR3 far surpassed the competitor s memory in performance and value. The power test showed that Samsung Green DDR3 used 77 percent less power than Company A s memory. During the thermal test, Samsung Green DDR3 generated impressive heat reduction at 25 percent less heat than Company A s memory. KT Corporation used the test results to project organizational savings through 2014 and increased shared value between the company and the environment. The following table lists the projected yearly monetary and environmental savings. 4 Samsung Green DDR3 memory technology saves up to 25 terawatt hours (TWh) per year. Benefits Overall, total cost of ownership (TCO) of the ICC data center significantly decreased with Samsung Green DDR3 memory in the servers. The following table lists the benefits that KT Corporation realized when the company installed a 500-rack server and converted the virtual desktop infrastructure to Samsung Green DDR3 memory. 5 Samsung Green DDR3 provides greater shared value between a company and the environment. Samsung Green DDR3 memory The Samsung 30 nm class, 2 Gb DDR3 operates at only 1.35 V. Servers using the Samsung Green DDR3 30 nm class chip can save 76 percent of the power consumed by 60 nm class, 1 Gb, 1.8 V DDR2 chip. 3 Figure 2.
