1 2017 World Book Day Fest Reading into ACTions Guidelines and Regulations 1. Organiser The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) 2. Description of Reading into ACTions Reading into ACTions is a competition open to all secondary school students in Hong Kong. It offers a chance for students to move on from solitary state of reading to more vibrant and collaborative ACTions that involve Academic, Creativity and Technology. The competition is divided into two rounds, namely, Round 1 Creative Script Writing Competition and Round 2 Drama Competition with the theme The Magic Moment. Based on the suggested reading list including fictions and non-fictions across the curriculum or texts of own choice, students will work in teams of 4 6 to create an adapted drama script integrated with a cross-curricular element (e.g. mathematics, science, arts, etc). The winning teams of Round 1 Creative Script Writing Competition will be advanced to perform the script on stage in a form of 5 8 minute drama at Round 2 Drama Competition held at the 2017 World Book Day Fest. 3. Aims The aims of Reading into ACTions are to: stimulate students interests in reading across the curriculum; promote cross-curricular collaboration between the panels of different key learning areas (KLAs); explore cross-curricular knowledge in an English drama context; have students collaborate in writing a drama script adapted from a text in the suggested reading list or of their own choice and integrated with a cross-curricular element; and have students perform the drama on stage, supported by multi-media technology. 1
2 4. Rules Round 1: Creative Script Writing Competition Each school can enter only one drama script written by a team of 4 6 participants. The team can be made up of students from any level or a combination of levels. Drama scripts should be adapted from the text(s) in the suggested reading list or of own choice. ONE of the following cross-curricular elements must be incorporated in the drama script in any form and by any means. Chinese elements (language, culture, literature, etc) Mathematics elements Science elements Technology elements Humanities elements (history, geography, economics, religious studies, etc) Arts elements (visual art, music, etc) Physical elements The script should be formatted in WORD on A4 size paper with a standard 12pt font, 1.5 line spacing and normal margins (top/bottom: 2.54 cm; left/right: 3.18 cm) The name of the school should appear in the header and all pages should be numbered. The text(s) being adapted and the cross-curricular element incorporated in the script should be stated clearly on the Entry Form. The script should be double-sided printed and stapled with the Entry Form as the cover page. The script should be given a short title The Magic Moment, and followed by an explanation of the topic, e.g. The Magic Moment: When Magical Number 7 Comes to Play. The script must clearly reflect the given topic. Round 2: Drama Competition Winning teams of Round 1 Creative Script Writing Competition will be advanced to perform their drama script on stage at Round 2 Drama Competition held at the 2017 World Book Day Fest (22 April 2016, Saturday). Each school can enter one team only with 4 6 participants performing the winning drama scripts. The performing participants can be the same as or different from those involved in Round 1 Creative Script Writing Competition. The team can be made up of students from any level or a combination of levels. The script should be recited and no scripts will be allowed during the performance. 2
3 The performance must be longer than 5 minutes and shorter than 8 minutes. Marks will be deducted from performance going beyond this time limit by more than one sentence. A multi-media background must be included. This multi-media background should be original work and creatively enhance the dramatic text and support but not replace the live dramatic performance. No copyright materials (including music, photos, video clips) should be used. Copyright infringement will result in disqualification. Further details of guidelines and regulations on Round 2 Drama Competition will be provided at latter stage to the winning teams of Round 1 Creative Script Writing Competition. 5. Role of Participants To participate in the competition, schools are recommended to: arrange one or two English teacher(s) as advisors to guide and assist students in the collaborative writing process for Round 1 of the competition and preparation for the Drama Competition in Round 2 where appropriate. arrange one subject teacher of the chosen cross-curricular element (e.g. a Music teacher for scripts with music elements, a Mathematics teacher for scripts with mathematics elements, etc.) to offer relevant subject knowledge and professional advice in the collaborative writing process for Round 1 of the competition and preparation for the Drama Competition in Round 2 where appropriate. Arrange one (or no more than two) teacher(s) to escort and supervise the winning team of students of Round 1 to the venue of the 2017 World Book Day Fest for Round 2 Drama Competition on 22 April Students will need to: Round 1: Creative Script Writing Competition read at least one text in the suggested reading list or text of own choice; participate fully in the collaborative writing process with teammates; and prepare and submit a 5 8 minute script adapted from the text(s) in the suggested reading list or of own choice with one cross-curricular element incorporated in the script. (Refer to Part 4 Rules for details.)
