4 Introduction to Community Transport While most people have access to a car, or to public transport, there are many who cannot travel by these means. This is either because they have difficulty using public transport due to a disability or mobility impairment or because they are unable to drive or do not have access to a car or live in a location where there is little to no public transport option. In these circumstances Community Transport plays a really important role in filling in the gaps in the country s transport network. Community led, localised schemes often help improve access to services for many people. The schemes do not compete against existing conventional public transport services and, in order to avoid services being withdrawn, you should always try to use them wherever possible. Examples of Community Transport schemes include: Car schemes Car sharing and car clubs Shared taxis Taxi buses Community minibuses Dial-a-Ride Some scheduled services - 1 -

5 Using this Directory What is it? Assuming that you do not have access to a car and are unable to use public transport, the following table is a guide to which options for transport may be available. Purpose of trip Options GP or other medical appointment Hospital appointment Car Scheme is there one serving your area? Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service Car Scheme is there one serving your parish? British Red Cross/St John Ambulance? Visiting someone in hospital or Day Dial-a-Ride covering your area (not for Day Centres) Centres and other Some car schemes Social and Health Social and Community Services Care services Special Transport Services (limited availability) Shopping Dial-a-Ride covering your area Your local car scheme may be able to help Leisure Dial-a-Ride covering your area Your local car scheme may be able to help - 2 -

6 Using this directory you can find out about your community transport options by looking up your parish in Section 4 to see which schemes it is served by. If you need help with planning your journey then you can get help over the phone or online at: Traveline: Tel or get your travel information and plan online at OxTAIL (Oxfordshire Travel and Advice Line for the over 65s and disabled): Tel or oxtail@oxfordshire.gov.uk If your parish is not served by a scheme, one of the county-wide schemes may be able to help you. Alternatively, you may wish to look into options available for setting up your own community transport scheme. Please note that the wheelchair symbol denotes that the scheme has a wheelchair accessible vehicle. In addition some car schemes will take foldable wheelchairs, but do not have a symbol denoting this

7 Setting up your own Scheme If you feel there is an unmet transport need in your community, you can help to find a solution by getting involved in the following ways: Identifying the problem work with your Parish Transport Representative and/or your Parish Council to carry out a local transport needs survey (help is available from ORCC) Working together get together a small group of interested local people to form a village transport group (invite representatives from local bodies like the school, the WI, the residential home, the playgroup, the Parish Council) Looking at the solution advice is available from ORCC to help your group find the right solution Getting a scheme up and running ORCC can offer information on relevant legislation, funding sources etc. If you are interested in finding out more please contact the Community Transport Adviser at ORCC (contact details are on page 56) - 4 -
