ECOC2013 MARKET FOCUS PACKET-OPTICAL CONVERGENCE: HOW TO UNLOCK THE TRUE POTENTIAL OF THE NETWORK Dirk van den Borne Solution Architect, Packet-Optical Convergence

WHAT IS PACKET-OPTICAL CONVERGENCE? Colored optics in the router CAPEX savings on grey interfaces, transponder boards & shelves, and OPEX on power consumption and footprint. Control and Management plane integration End-to-end service provisioning of packet and transport layer, increase interface utilization through multi-layer restoration. Multi-layer traffic engineering TE-controllers / SDN allows to route services through both packet and transport network based on application-specific constraints. 2 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. 4 SOLUTION THE NEW PACKET-OPTICAL NETWORK INTERWORKING CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT Multi-layer NMS integration Multi-layer control plane integration Packet Service now gains: Resource visibility Information about Shared Risk Link groups Information about L0/L1 alarm / monitoring information Which enables: Accelerated service velocity Pro-active protection Effective restoration Higher utilization of resources 4 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. 5 NMS INTEGRATION: VIRTUAL TRANSPONDERS Set wavelength Turn Tx on / off Alarm correlation Transport NMS The transport NMS provides global visibility of the end-to-end transport system in order to turn on/off channels, set transmitter wavelength and provide alarm correlation. SOLUTION Virtual Transponder (VXP) allow colored router interfaces to be managed just like a native DWDM transponder. 5 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. Juniper Networks Confidential

PROVISIONING WAVELENGTH CIRCUITS USING CLI SOLUTION Colored interfaces can also be managed via the router CLI in a very similar way as a grey client interface. 6 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. Juniper Networks Confidential

SOLUTION Visibility of packet layer resilience mechanisms to the optical performance improves overall network resilience. 14 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. Juniper Networks Confidential

TODAY: DWDM INTERFACES IN THE ROUTER DARK FIBER TRANSPORT 1 x 100G DWDM Up to 120 km of unamplified dark fiber No inline equipment, no DWDM terminal equipment 100G coherent transceivers have an excellent power budget Coherent receiver allows for very low input powers, down to -28 dbm, due to the coherent amplification provided by the local oscillator laser. This allows for 100G dark fiber transport without any additional DWDM equipment. SOLUTION Integrated 100G coherent interfaces supports up to 120 km of dark fiber without external DWDM equipment. 15 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. Juniper Networks Confidential

TOMORROW: COHERENT GOES PLUGGABLE Vendor A Vendor B Lower power Lower cost SOLUTION Pluggable optics will enable plug-n-play 100G coherent IPoDWDM across a wide range of routing platforms. 16 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. Juniper Networks Confidential

TOMORROW: LINE-SIDE STANDARDIZATION! (1/2) Standardization and interworking between vendors is standard practice in many other industry sectors: Wireline, mobile broadband and IP networking, are all industries with plenty of examples of successful crossindustry standardization efforts. It hasn t stopped those industries from innovating! Even in optical transport there are examples of industry-wide standardization, e.g. G.709 / OTN: But this was never extended to line-side optical interop. Framing, equalization and forward error correction are not black magic standardization of high-performance optical line-side interfaces is therefore perfectly technically feasible. CHALLENGE Standardized 100G / 400G line interfaces would allow the industry to focus on solutions, not plumbing Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. Juniper Networks Confidential

TOMORROW: LINE-SIDE STANDARDIZATION! (2/2) Proprietary line-side optical transport can enable a timeto-market advantage in optical performance but we can t beat the laws of physics: Optical modulation formats are (close to) theoretically optimal. Forward error correction codes used in optical transport are approaching Shannon s limit. Nonlinear compensation brings only limited benefit on 100Goptimized transport systems. Optical transport is therefore at an infliction point: Around 2015 all system vendors will have more or less the same optical performance. So why further delay line-side standardization in optical transport? Claude Shannon SOLUTION Extend standardization to optical line-side interworking in order to build a true multi-layer open ecosystem. 18 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc. Juniper Networks Confidential

SUMMARY: KEY TAKE-AWAYS 1. Packet-transport convergence enables faster service provisioning and higher network reliability due to a better visibility of the packet layer into the deployed optical resources and topology. 2. Virtual transponders integrate DWDM router interfaces into the transport NMS, allow colored router interfaces to be managed just like a native DWDM transponder. 3. A combination of transport and packet layer traffic engineering allows to efficiently adapt network resources to continuously changing traffic demands. 4. Integration of DWDM interfaces in the router enables lower CAPEX, power consumption and footprint, while improving reliability and manageability. 19 Copyright 2013 Juniper Networks, Inc.
