VIRTUALIZING THE EDGE NFV adoption to transform telecommunications infrastructure Karthik Kailasam Director, Integrated Modular Solutions September 2015
Key Messages The transformation of telecom networks is happening now! Reliance on standardized servers and operation systems Robust independent software ecosystem beginning to develop Telecom specific virtualization software is being developed to deliver real time traffic to millions of users and supports high reliability (99.999% uptime) Upgrading to fiber networks and adding virtualized equipment at edge are being done to manage burgeoning IP traffic intelligently Virtualization at the edge is helping reduce power, cooling and space requirements Enables facility/site consolidation with smaller modular data centers or transport aggregation nodes Compatibility of the NFV based infrastructure with the legacy purpose built hardware infrastructure is being addressed 2
Telecom Environment is being Virtualized and Software-Driven Cloud / Virtualization Data Center Speed of Deployment Telecom 3 FROM Separate IT/ data center & network/ central office Separation of service elements & support systems Hardware monitoring appliances Network management TO Common technology & technical plant Integrated orchestration, automation, and virtualization Software-based monitoring Customer experience management
Network Challenges & Needs Challenges automated, speedy and profitable service delivery Needs agile, efficient and well orchestrated Programmable networks is the main driver behind the acceleration in Network-function virtualization (NFV) Software-defined networking (SDN) Source OVUM NFV revenue forecast, NORTH AMERICA WILL BE LEADING REVENUE DRIVER FOR NFV 4 NFV enables application virtualization and consolidation
What is Software-Defined Network (SDN)? Today Tomorrow SDN Layer Virtual Applications Proprietary applications & features Proprietary control plane Proprietary data plane (hardware) Control Plane Data Plane (Hardware) 5 Telecom is taking a page from IT by decoupling the software that routes traffic from the hardware that forwards traffic to the intended destination.
What is Network-Function Virtualization (NFV)? Many network equipment types are being consolidated into high volume servers, switches and storage Telecom Network Equipment Session Border Controllers Deep Packet Inspection Probes Virtual Machines Principle of Virtualization: Routers Standard Servers Broadband Remote Access Server 6 Radio Network Controllers Standard Storage A number of virtual machines are created on one server Telecom is transforming the network architecture, evolving to standard IT virtualization technology to reduce CapEx, OpEx and time to market
Telecom Network Overview Core / Backbone Access / Backhaul Edge Data Center Network Operation Center (NOC) Mobile Switch Office Macro Cell Aggregation Node Small Cell Core Switch / Central Office Video Hub Office Wireline Aggregation Neighborhood Distribution Network Edge 7 Number of Sites for Major Service Provider 10s 100s 1,000s 10,000s 100,000s 1,000,000s 10,000,000s
Next-Generation Applications and Video Drive Exponential Traffic Growth Typical Volume of Data (by Application) Global Data Traffic Source: Various Service Provider Annual Reports Source: Cisco VNI 2015 Global Mobile Network Speeds (Kbps) Revenue & Cost for Traffic ($US/GB) Source: Cisco VNI 8 Source: GSMA, Cisco VNI 2013 Source: Ovum, Cisco VNI 2013
Service Provider Landscape Non-traditional customers are growing Technology Providers Carrier Neutral Providers Internet Content Providers Communications Service Providers 9
Why Do Service Providers Want Software-Defined, Virtual Networks? Software, not hardware, creates the connections that stitch together multiple networks. Service Providers can reconfigure the connectivity and capacity of a circuit without changing its physical characteristics. Source - Andromeda Google s Network Virtualization stack, which powers their compute engine, orchestrating across virtual machines, hypervisors, operating systems, network interface cards, top of rack switches, fabric switches, border routers, and network peering edge. 10 SDN allows service providers to dynamically control the path of data traffic in the network
Why Do Service Providers Want to Virtualize the Edge? Network islands can be connected with neutral colocation & dark fiber, linking the submarine cable landing stations and providing open-access to all networks along the way Cloud capacity can move from core to edge optimizing IP traffic and improving QoS Source: Allied Fiber 11 Neutral colocation creates a marketplace for transport enabling edge caching, virtualization and saves a lot transport$$$
Software-defined As It Applies To Critical Infrastructure The fundamental questions: How does one right size critical infrastructure from the beginning, knowing the IT/network load is not constant and will fluctuate and even grow over time? How does modular power and cooling help reduce upfront costs and minimize waste of critical infrastructure? Is there a need for a critical infrastructure orchestration layer that can manage and control the power and cooling systems to match the supply side to the demand side? Where is the representation of the critical network infrastructure physical layout in a software-defined, virtual network? 12
How Does the Network Evolve to Handle Traffic and Customer Management? Data Center Consolidated, Converged Core Network Operation Center (NOC) Mobile Switch O Office Transport Colocation Distributed, Intelligent Access Fiber/ Microwave Macro Cell with RRH Small Cell O Video Hub Office O Core Switch / Central Office Aggregation Node Wireline Aggregation Neighborhood Distribution Level of Network Intelligence Network intelligence is being pushed to a consolidated core and out to the access network Yesterday Tomorrow 13
Virtualization Product Segments 14 Source: OVUM. Consolidated converged core driven by carrier NFV. Distributed intelligent access driven by distributed NFV.
How Does the Network Intelligently Manage Consolidated Core & Distributed Access? Today Tomorrow No API today gives the desired mix of standardization, flexibility and ease of use Customers seek new tools to simplify operations and deliver more flexibility Standardized, simplified open API for IT infrastructure mgmt. and viewer technology for different management devices to access Universal connector between workload & infrastructure management Infrastructure and IT monitor & control Desktop Interaction 15 Re-engineering the industry around the capability to aggregate and use data from disparate devices and silos of data
Concluding Comments Benefits of virtualizing the edge Optimize real estate by reducing rack space & power consumption Reduce operating costs Enable facility/site consolidation with smaller modular data centers or transport aggregation nodes Increase revenue with efficient work load orchestrations at edge Open API gives the desired mix of standardization, flexibility and ease of use Upgrading to fiber networks and adding NFV elements at edge helps intelligently manage burgeoning IP traffic Compatibility of the NFV based infrastructure with legacy purpose-built hardware infrastructure is being addressed as a hybrid architecture 16 Visit info.emersonnetworkpower.com/telecom-edge to learn more
