2 Overview This user guide provides the details on the following operation procedures for physical to virtual conversion from Windows Server to ESXi virtual machine and directly uploading it to datastore on ESXi host using ActiveImage Protector Server Edition. 4 1. Before starting Before starting the operation procedures, please make sure the following requirements are met. Direct uploading to datastore on ESXi host supports ESXi host version 4.0 or later only. Direct uploading is not supported if the following features are not enabled on ESXi host. Version 5.x : Storage API Version 4.x : vstorage API Select [Configuration] tab on vsphere Client and click on [Software] [License] to enable these features. You cannot create the virtual machine of which name already exists on ESXi host. You must specify a different name or delete the existing virtual machine from datastore and proceed with the operation. 3

5 2. Physical to virtual conversion Physical environment with live Windows Server may be converted to virtual machine and directly uploaded to datastore on ESXi host. The following are the operation procedures, for example, on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. Operation Procedures 1. Run [ActiveImage Protector] from Start menu. 2. Expand [Tool] on ActiveImage console and click on [Physical to Virtual]. 4

6 3. [Physical to Virtual Wizard] is displayed. Select [VMware file format (VMDK)] and click on [Next]. 4. [VmWare Virtual File Target] is displayed as follows. Select [Save to an ESXi server]. 5. [Convert Image or Physical Disk] is displayed as follows. 5

7 Select [Convert from a physical drive]. 6. Select the disk to convert Only one disk can be selected to convert at a time. 7. [VShere Server Connection] dialog is displayed as follows to specify the target ESXi host to upload virtual disk. ESXi host managed on vcenter Server may be specified. 6

8 When connection to ESXi host or vcenter Server is established, select the target host to upload and upload type. With this example, [Create a new VM with virtual disk] is selected. To attach converted data disk to the existing virtual machine, select [Attach virtual disk to an existing VM]. 8. [New Virtual Machine Settings] dialog is displayed as follows. 7

9 9. [Virtual Disk Options] dialog is displayed as follows. Please select virtual disk controller for [Controller] to connect virtual disk to convert. SCSI Virtual machine is created with the selected controller and connected to virtual disk. 8

10 IDE Virtual disk is connected to the selected port. Select provisioning option for virtual disk for [Disk Options]. Thin Provision Based on the used datastore space, virtual disk file is created. With [Thin Provision] option enabled, conversion process time and datastore space utilization is optimum, however, provides slightly less performance than thick provisioning. Thick Provision (Lazy zero) Space required for the virtual disk is allocated when the virtual disk is created. Blocks are zeroed out right before writing data to the block. Thick Provision (Eagerly zero) Space required for the virtual disk is allocated when the virtual disk is created. All blocks are zeroed out when virtual disk file is created. It might take much longer process time for conversion, however, provides higher performance than thin provisioning. 10. [Conversion Summary] is displayed. 9

11 Please review the settings. If you need to change any setting, click on [< Previous] button to return to the specific settings page. When the settings are confirmed, click on the [Finish] button to start conversion. You can make sure from vsphere Client that the VM is created. 10

12 11. Upon completion of conversion process, the virtual machine created from the converted virtual disk is available. Please configure the required settings and install Vmware Tools. 11

13 3. Conversion of backup image file to virtual disk ActiveImage Protector provides the capability to convert a backup image file to virtual machine and upload it to datastore on ESXi host. The following are the operation procedures, for example, on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. Operation Procedures 1. Run [ActiveImage Protector] from Start menu. 2. Expand [Tool] on ActiveImage console and click on [Physical to Virtual]. 12

14 3. [Physical To Virtual Wizard] is displayed. Select [Mware file format (VMDK)].and click on [Next]. 4. [VmWare Virtual File Target] is displayed as follows. Select [Save to an ESXi server]. 13

15 5. [Convert Image or Physical Disk] is displayed as follows. Select [Convert from an image file]. 6. [Convert Image File] dialog is displayed as follows. Specify the image file to convert, and the disks included in the image file are listed. 14

17 7. [VShere Server Connection] dialog is displayed as follows to specify the ESXi host to upload virtual disk. ESXi host managed on vcenter Server may be specified. When connection to ESXi host or vcenter Server is established, select the target host to upload and upload type. With this example, [Create a new VM with virtual disk] is selected here.
