9 Chapter 1 Introduction This chapter provides general information about Infoblox vnios software and Infoblox grids. It includes the following topics: About vnios Appliances on page 10 Setting Up a Grid on page 11 Quick Start Guide for Installing vnios Software on VMware Platforms 9

10 Introduction About vnios Appliances Infoblox NIOS software enables customers to deploy large, robust, manageable and cost effective Infoblox grids that provide core network services. An Infoblox grid is a group of two or more NIOS appliances that share sections of a common, distributed, built-in database and which you configure and monitor through a single, secure point of access: the grid master. A grid consists of a master and at least one member. You can deploy the following vnios appliances on VMware virtual machines running ESX or ESXi servers 4.0 and later: VM-5 VM-25 vnios appliances support most of the features of the Infoblox physical appliances, except for the limitations listed in Appendix A. You can configure vnios appliances as single or HA (high availability) grid members. vnios grid members do not support configuration as grid masters or grid master candidates. Figure 1.1 illustrates a grid with vnios grid members. In the illustration, the grid master and the grid master candidate are Infoblox HA pairs in the data center. The vnios grid members are in branch offices. Smaller sites can consolidate the vnios appliances and other virtual applications on one virtualization server. They can manage the grid members from one central location, the grid master.
