1 Smith 1 John Smith (A Sample High School Student Genealogy Research Paper) Mr. Jones Local History and Genealogy 16 July 2015 The Paternal Ancestry of Cordelia Knox Lamb ( ) Cordelia Knox Lamb's grave site can be visited in the restored Baker Street Cemetery in Schroon Lake, New York, which is located a short distance from Hoffman Road on route 9. It was Cordelia's parents and grandparents in the Knox family who moved to Schroon Lake in its early days in the 19th century. They, like so many others who came to Schroon in the early days, were from Vermont. Cordelia's paternal ancestors were Scotch-Irish immigrants who came to New Hampshire in the early 18th century. First Generation, Ascending: Cordelia (Knox) Lamb 1 CORDELIA KNOX was born about 1837 in Schroon Lake, New York1,2. She died 15 June 1870 and is buried in the Baker Street Cemetery in Schroon Lake, NY 3. Sometime between 1855 and 1860, she married John Lamb 4. John Lamb was born about 1833 in Crown Point, NY5 and parents and date of death are as yet undetermined. Cordelia's parents were 2 Jephthah Knox ( ) and 3 Philura Lewis ( )6. 2 Smith 2 Cordelia's Life Story When Cordelia was married (sometime between ), Schroon Lake was a fairly isolated Adirondack community. Crown Point was the nearest market place for trade and tanneries constituted the dominant industry, with iron ore processing a close second. 7 Only about a third of the town was dedicated to farming and the height of the local lumbering industry had passed some fifteen years previously8. In 1860, Cordelia was married to John Lamb and was living with her husband and 7 month old infant son Elden with her parents, Jephthah and Philura Knox. In 1865, Cordelia Knox Lamb and her small family had moved to North Hudson 9. They are living in a framed house (as opposed to a log home like many of their neighbors). John Lamb's profession is listed as laborer and he is identified as currently in the army. The year this census was taken, the Civil War came to an end. John Lamb was mustered into the army in 1862 and honorably discharged 29 Jun He served in Company E, New York 118th Infantry 11. Company E of the New York 118 th Infantry12 was comprised of soldiers mainly recruited from Crown Point, Moriah, Newcomb, North Hudson, Schroon, Ticonderoga, and all of Essex County. The 118th was also known as the Adirondack Regiment. They performed provost duty at Richmond and Manchester, Virginia until June, John Lamb was a prisoner of war and held at the prison in Andersonville, GA until Watson, Winslow C. Jephthah was born in Shoreham, VT15. Jephthah's Life Story Schroon Lake was settled around the year Jephthah had been born by settlers from New England, mostly from Vermont16. Jephthah was to follow in the footsteps of these early Vermonters and by 1820 was living in Schroon Lake with his wife, Philuria (Lewis), and a child 17. His parents had also moved there and it is likely that he came with them. By 1840, the Knox family 18 had grown considerably to include seven children19. The family was still in Schroon Lake in 1850 and by 1860 Jephtha owned a small farm valued at $ Jephtha and his wife were both still living in 1870 in Schroon Lake with their son-in-law Oliver and his family21. 6 Smith 6 Third Generation, Ascending: John Knox 5 JOHN KNOX ( ) was born in Woodstock, Vermont on 18 June 1774 and he died in 1857 in Schroon Lake, NY. John was the son of Timothy Knox and Abigail Dike of Woodstock, VT23. John's Life Story In 1810, John was living in Shoreham, Addison, Vermont. He was married to Keziah and had a family of two, which would eventually grow to three. By 1820, John Knox had moved his family to Schroon Lake, where he would remain for the rest of his life 24. In 1855, two years before his death, John is living with his son, Henry, in Schroon Lake. Henry was a shoe maker. 25 John is listed as a farmer in the NYS 1855 census, but farming would not have been the principle occupation of most locals in the mid-19th century. Farming would have supplemented a family's income. Not all farmers tended their land well. In his 1869 Military and Civil History of the County of Essex New York, Watson notes that The natural fertility of the soil, when first opened to cultivation, yielded abundant harvests; injudicious tillage gradually exhausted its productive elements. 26 In John Knox's time, farms would have appeared in Schroon at various levels of quality, with some being newly carved out of the forest and some producing little owing to poor management. 7 Smith 7 Fourth Generation, Ascending: Timothy Knox 9 TIMOTHY KNOX was born in Lancaster, MA in and died 1 April 1807 in Woodstock, VT28 the son of 10 Timothy Knox and 11 Jane McAllister. Timothy married Abigail Dike. Timothy was the son of 10 Timothy Knox 1755) of Lancaster, MA 29 (abt ) and 11 Jane McAllister ( Timothy Knox was a Scotch-Irish immigrant who lived in Suncook, Merrimack, New Hampshire. His wife, Jane, was also from Ireland. They were part of a larger wave of Scotch-Irish immigration to New England that occurred during this period. Timothy's Life Story In 1790, Timothy Knox is noted in the first United States Census as living in what was to become Woodstock, VT31. The story goes that around 1765, after a disappointment in matters of romance at Harvard, Timothy Knox moved away from friends and family and settled in an isolated section of the woods that was to become Woodstock, VT 32. It was three years that he lived there alone, trapping and trading and hunting. By 1787, Timothy owned a farm in Woodstock but could not manage his finances well and lost his farm despite the efforts of his son, John, to save it. In 1798, a guardian was put in charge of his property 33, securing it for debt, and we know that his son John and his family would have moved to Schroon Lake by No doubt the loss of his inheritance was part motivation for his move. Timothy is buried in Cushing Cemetery in Windsor, VT. He died in Ancestry.com. Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, [database on-line]. 9 Smith 9 Conclusion Like many families, the Knox family is a slice of American history in small scale. Timothy Knox immigrated from the British Isles to New England during a wave of immigration in the 18 th century. His son, Timothy, spent some time at Harvard and tried to raise a family in a frontier community in Vermont. His son John, having no land in Vermont, left to find opportunities that were opening up in the Adirondacks. His granddaughter, Cordelia, married a man who served in the Civil War and ended up in Andersonville prison. The family would stay in Schroon for nearly a century before moving on again to find more opportunity elsewhere (Elden Lamb, Cordelia's son, seems to have possibly moved west to Nebraska). During the time that the family was in Schroon, they would have seen the important changes the area underwent during the 19 th century, from frontier forest community to tourist resort.
