INDIRECT BULLYING DIRECT Physical Aggression physical acts that are demeaning and humiliating, for example: Inflicting bodily harm, spitting, stealing, defacing property, threatening with a weapon Verbal Aggression mocking, namecalling, dirty looks, taunting, teasing about clothes or possessions, teasing about appearance, verbal threats of inflicting harm to your self and/or your possessions, sexually suggestive or abusive language Intimidation threatening to reveal personal information, graffiti, publicly challenging someone to do something (dare), defacing property or clothing, playing dirty tricks, taking possessions (i.e., lunch, clothing) INDIRECT Social Alienation Gossiping Spreading Rumors Ethnic Slurs Social Rejection Manipulation Public Humiliation Encouraging students to dislike someone

5 AGGRESSIVE VS. PASSIVE BULLIES AGGRESSIVE Physical aggression Impulsive, hot-tempered Angry, belligerent, quick to use force Fearless Motivated by power Sees hostility when none Little empathy Have more family problems than usual May suffer physical and emotional abuse at home Create resentment and frustration in peer group PASSIVE Insecure Less popular Less aggressive Low self-esteem Unhappy home lives Difficulty focusing at school Violent temper tantrums or outbursts Tend to hang back and wait for a bullying situation to present itself rather than initiate one Align themselves with a more aggressive bully

6 CYBER-BULLYING Cyber-bullying consists of using the Internet or other mobile devices to send or post harmful or cruel texts or images to bully others

7 Harassing text messages COMMON FORMS OF CYBER-BULLYING Creating fake profiles on social networks (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) Spreading rumors/gossip online Sexting Posting mean or hurtful messages online Forwarding hurtful messages to others

8 SIGNS THAT SOMEONE IS BEING BULLIED: Unexplainable injuries Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating. Kids may come home from school hungry because they did not eat lunch. Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide

9 EFFECTS OF BULLYING: Kids who are bullied are more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school and experience the following:

14 WHAT IS HAZING? Hazing refers to any act expected of someone being part of a group that humiliates, degrades, or risks emotional and/or physical harm regardless of the person s willingness to participate.

15 SOME EXAMPLES OF HAZING INCLUDE: ALCOHOL USE PADDLING PHYSICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL SHOCKS BRANDING DEGRADING/HUMILIATING ACTIVITIES PUBLIC STUNTS FORCED OR REQUIRED CONSUMPTION OF LIQUIDS, SOLIDS, OR COMBINATIONS, I.E., ALCOHOL, MASSIVE QUANTITIES OF WATER, SPICY OR UNUSUAL FOODS, OR NON-FOOD ITEMS

16 WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF HAZING? Hazing effects every person differently. The physical and psychological effects could be life threatening. Common emotions associated with hazing include, but are not limited to: Confusion Support someone who is being bullied Anger Betrayal Fear Resentment Embarrassment Humiliation Hopelessness Helplessness Anxiety Depression Suicide

17 HAZING WARNING SIGNS Does this activity promote leadership, sport, or academic skills? Does this activity promote and conform to the ideals and values of your sport and/or organization? Will this activity increase feelings of friendship between new and returning members? Would you tell prospective members what they will go through? Would you be willing to allow parents to witness this activity? A judge? Your coach/advisor? The principal? Would you be willing to defend this activity in court? Does this activity meet the standards that prohibit hazing? If you answered NO to any of these questions, you are probably hazing!!

18 HAZING DOES NOT EQUAL LEADERSHIP San Felipe Del Rio CISD is committed to the belief that abusive behavior, harassment and assault does not build character, does not build leadership skills, and does not foster group loyalty or unity. HAZING is an abuse of power and relationships, and its purpose is to demean others.
